Eagerly listening to the Radio 2 premiere and wondering what the hell Padam Padam was!

I remember listening to the premiere on Radio 2 between getting off the tube and walking to the office, although I'd already heard the LQ version a few times so knew roughly what to expect.

Also I had a half day and vividly remember watching the premiere of the video on my phone at Oxford Circus

I'm gonna try and include some anniversary milestone dates in this thread as they happen!

The American Idol gig was a great opener for her and the Capital Ball helped spread the word and opened her up to commercial radio play and younger audience

The Padam red was significant, the video was distinctive, the memes really spread the word further and we all got behind what was thrown at us downloading, watching, streaming. The physicals, the remixes, the extended versions on her website etc.

Everything came together and we could follow and measure almost daily what was happening

I’m still not over the 10 week chart mayhem: 26-23-12-9-8-10-12-10-14-16.

I don’t think I’ve ever bought so many downloads, CDs, cassettes and vinyl of the same song - fun times though.

Iconic, I kind of had a feeling it would become a hit but I didn't expect at this level - I mean no1 UK radio airplay, etc. etc. Amazing! Just baffles me that it didn't crack the Hot 100, especially when, at least as a Kylie fan, I felt she was "everywhere" in the US promoting (I don't want to convert this thread into a post mortem, mind).

It's a pity it didn't get picked up Europe a bit more outside of the Gays.

It really was marketed to that Pride, gay audience maybe a bit too much in hindsight but got her a hit in her main UK market etc.

I just loved watching its chart journey and making its way to the top 10 as it felt surreal and very proud that it achieved one of its highest chart peaks here in Ireland.

Love the song and credit where credit is due.

That said… I do think its success has been massively overhyped. Traditional media love Kylie and have been quick to sell everyone the kool aid, but is a song with modest UK chart success and barely any major international chart success really the song of the summer? Feels like we all wanted it to be a massive hit, Kylie told us it was and we believed it!

Hope this doesn’t sound negative. I love, love, love Kylie but as the years pass, I do think her team have become the masters of spin.

While i kind of get where you are coming from, it was a massive hit by Kylie’s and other legacy acts standard who normally don’t bother the top 20 nevermind a top 10. It’s like Melanie C getting a top 20 hit with Loving you, it wasn’t really a big hit by any successful acts standard but it was a big triumph for her at that point in her career. This is even more so in that it actually sold well and charted top 10, it’s kylies biggest hit since All the lovers.

I think 4 weeks in the top 10 and gold, soon to be platinum is more than modest, especially for an act like KYLIE!

Plus the song was literally everywhere last summer, even the straights latched on to it!

I appreciate the counter arguments and we make them all the time. The song has indeed performed well in the context of Kylie and for an artist her age. I just don’t think that changes the fact that in the wider scheme of things Padam’s sales and chart run was decent but not spectacular. Did it even make the top 100 songs of the year in the UK? Certainly nowhere else. But the PR around it makes it sound like a number 1 smash! Tension debuted well largely because her dedicated fans lapped up the variants, then it sank like a stone.

Love her still I do!

You have to consider the longevity of Padam! 12 months on and 250k streams per day is fantastic. Platinum in Oz. On the way to Platinum in UK. Tension when compared to similar artists albums has performed well and will get a decent bounce with summer gigs and re-issue.

The side effect of streaming PP for 10 weeks is I didn't bother streaming the next single Tension when it came out.

In context of kylies singles success in the later years padam padam was a huge hit and even for countries where it may not have peaked highly it got Kylies name out there again.

In overall context of charts its not a massive hit but a decent size hit which is fine but as its a rarity for legacy acts such as Kylie.

I saw there were a lot of people posting on social media about the anniversary and even she herself did one, was there any uptick in streams on the 18th?

Was thinking the same, I gave it a few streams to celebrate and there was a push for others to stream it on SH too.
