I'd say Ariana Grande and Vampire Weekend's albums have defined my year the most so far and Billie Eilish's will almost certainly be doing the same in the coming months. The "big pop girl" releases have felt non-stop at the moment with the likes of Beyoncé, Dua and Taylor releasing recently too! Charli may not quite be on the same level in terms of success, but her album is just around the corner as well of course. Speaking of Charli... an unexpected highlight of the year is electro clash music having a bit of a moment again, with both 'Von dutch' and the return of 'Perfect (Exceeder)' in the top 40.

#1 singles in my personal chart this year so far are courtesy of: TR/ST, Ariana, The Blinders, Everything Everything, Dua, Chalk, Vampire Weekend and Fontaines D.C. so yay these people.

I've added 202 songs to my 'best of 2024' playlist at the moment, compared to 243 for 2023 at the same point, so a bit of a decline there but still pretty good going.

2024 has been head and shoulders above 2023 for me so far. Last year was one of the least inspiring years for music in ages, felt like a general drought for new albums, new artists, and chart music just didn't appeal to me as much. Thankfully, 2024 has been a big improvement on all fronts! I've discovered some great new artists including Artemas, Djo and Lay Bankz from their viral hits, and several of my favourites have released this year too.

Favourite songs of 2024 so far, in no particular order:

Alec Benjamin - Sacrifice Tomorrow

Ariana Grande - yes, and?

Benson Boone - Beautiful Things

Benson Boone - Slow It Down

Daniel Seavey - The Older You Get

Djo - End of Beginning

Jacqline - Effortless

Marcus & Martinus - Unforgettable

Perrie - Forget About Us

The Kid LAROI - HEAVEN

Ulrik Munther & Free Will - This Right Here

And albums:

Alec Benjamin - 12 Notes

Ariana Grande - eternal sunshine

Benson Boone - Fireworks & Rollerblades

Conan Gray - Found Heaven

Metteson - Look to a Star

Michael Aldag - sorry for everything

Powfu - the fleeting life of a fool

Shaznay Lewis - Pages

Tom Odell - Black Friday

Think this year really got me into different genres. Last year I think I'm exploring more electronic stuff and this year I think I'm exploring more vogue+afrobeats stuff, or ethnic music in general.

the drama is much worse for sure, especially in the K-pop sphere with the Min Heejin vs. HYBE debacle, and of course in the western world with the Drake vs. Kendrick beef, the Nicki vs. Megan beef, etc. That being said... this has been the most exciting time to be a chart watcher in YEARS. It really feels like 2012 when anything could take off on the radio/streaming charts again. I've become more invested in albums than I was before and overall it feels a lot more plentiful than recent years. Hell, Billboard feels like it's gone in so many different lanes lately. My faves include:

Songs:

Ariana Grande - yes, and?

Ariana Grande - we can't be friends (wait for your love)

Artemas - i like it when you kiss me

Beyoncé - Texas Hold 'Em

Conor Maynard - Maybe I

(G)I-DLE - Super Lady

Madison Beer - Make You Mine

Muni Long - Made For Me

Olivia Rodrigo - obsessed

Reneé Rapp/Megan Thee Stallion - Not My Fault

Sabrina Carpenter - Espresso

Selena Gomez - Love On

Twenty One Pilots - Overcompensate

(+ a few holdovers from 2023 like Lovin On Me, Stay (Never Leave), Water, Houdini, Standing Next To You, and the like)

Albums:

Ariana Grande - eternal sunshine

Beyoncé - Cowboy Carter

Billie Eilish - HIT ME HARD AND SOFT (my fave album so far!)

Dua Lipa - Radical Optimism

(G)I-DLE - 2

IVE - IVE SWITCH

I'm pretty sure things are only gonna go up with new Twenty One Pilots and Namjoon solo on Friday, as well as new Charli, Camila, Stray Kids, EVERGLOW and now Zedd coming up :w00t: let's just hope the world doesn't blow up before then!

I've definitely been listening to a lot more music this year than last year! Faves have been the deluxe version of Caroline Polachek's album, and new releases from Mahmood, Charli XCX, Shygirl and Dua Lipa. Feels like there's definitely a dark clubby sound coming into fashion which I'm really here for. In terms of new discoveries, I've enjoyed getting into Empress Of, several Eurovision artists, and some BJSC faves like Fat Dog.

Looking towards the rest of the year, hyped for Charli's new album, I actually can't think of any others I'm really looking forward to right now but I'm sure something will surprise me!

Just a quick 10 fave songs + albums, no particular order:

1. Mahmood - TUTA GOLD

2. Caroline Polachek - Coma

3. Dua Lipa - Training Season

4. Pet Shop Boys - Loneliness

5. Charli XCX - Von dutch

6. Angelina Mango - La noia

7. Marina Satti - ZARI

8. Beyoncé - BODYGUARD

9. Shygirl ft. Kingdom & Empress Of - 4eva

10. Sabrina Carpenter - Espresso

1. Kacey Musgraves - Deeper Well

2. Beyoncé - COWBOY CARTER

3. Mahmood - NEI LETTI DEGLI ALTRI

4. Shygirl - Club Shy

5. Alizzz - Conducción Temeraria

6. Allie X - Girl with No Face

7. Dua Lipa - Radical Optimism

8. Vampire Weekend - Only God Was Above Us

9. Empress Of - For Your Consideration

10. Billie Eilish - HIT ME HARD AND SOFT

2024 has been year full of many ups and downs for me. Some of the albums released this year have been truly magnificent, my top 5 in order from best being Billie Eilish's latest beauty of an album, Vampire Weekend's sensational 'Only God Was Above Us', sax god Kamasi Washington's 'Fearless Movement', Justice's 'Hyperdrama' and the punch 'You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To' from Knocked Loose. I would say that The Smile, Ariana, Beyoncé, Four Tet & MGMT's latest albums would make up the rest of my top 10. We truly have been served

The EPs this year have been fantastic as well: 'Club Shy' (from Shygirl), 'Unheard' (from Hozier) & 'Connla's Well' (from Maruja) all instantly stand out. As for the genre that I stan the most, hip-hop, there haven't been any particularly incredible records released (with an exception made for Yeat's wonderful '2093'). There have been some fantastic hip-hop tracks, many of which are a result of the Drake vs Kendrick feud, the best one being Metro Boomin's 'BBL Drizzy" :cheeseblock: Some great chart hits as well this year ('MILLION DOLLAR BABY' and 'Starburster' + 'Bandit' charting for their respective artists.

Then again, some utter rubbish has been released. That god awful MGK X Trippie Redd EP, Nicki Minaj's 'Big Foot' + there are so many more. Too many stinkers for my liking

As far as number ones go, it's actually been a surprisingly good year! :o

Last Christmas - eternal slay

Stick Season - overplayed but a really good song

Texas Hold Em - felt like it came and went pretty quckly but a great lead single from Bey and it gave her her first solo #1 in 16 years!

Beautiful Things - incredible breakout song from Benson and I think he'll be one of the major players over the next few years!

Too Sweet - an unexpected smash from Hozier 10 years after his first and last huge hit. Still haven't got bored of it!

Fortnight - probably my second least fave but still one of Taylor's better songs. Admittedly feels a bit too dark to listen to atm.

Espresso - this is a superstar-making hit and will be remembered as one of the defining songs of 2024. HIT!

Houdini - far from the worst Eminem single and I personally love the nod to his earlier (better) music.

Please Please Please - a worthy successful follow-up to Espresso further cementing Sab's position as a major pop girl.

Will we have an outright awful #1 before the end of the year? :o
