VOTE NINE: King Rollo

Track: The Boo Radleys - Martin, Doom! It's Seven O'Clock

This was a good selection of 90s songs. I think I would have heard some of them at the time they came out but there was nothing here that I was very familiar with as Britpop isn't really a genre that I have in my music collection.

12pts to Rialto - Monday Morning 5:19

10pts to Super Furry Animals - Hermann Loves Pauline

8pts to The Divine Comedy - Tonight We Fly

7pts to Suede - Europe Is Our Playground

6pts to Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Patio Song

5pts to Animals That Swim - Pink Carnations

4pts to Dubstar - No More Talk (I wasn't expecting to hear a sample from Owner Of A Lonely Heart by Yes at the start of this)

3pts to Manic Street Preachers - 4st 7lb

2pts to Spacehog - In the Meantime

1pt to Ash - Petrol

Thanks to Dandy for hosting.

Was Rollo's entry ever in doubt? He did it again and managed to submit the longest song in the contest, albeit one that does a good job of highlighting a different (and more typical) side of the Boo Radleys for those who may have only been familiar with the obvious Wake Up Boo! before the contest. Rollo's own 12 points goes to Rialto and he awards 10 to the SFAs and 8 to the Divine Comedy as well, meaning that all of them take the chance to close the gap on Pulp at the top who receive a rare miss in points. Suede have been slowly picking up points and another 7 here sees them closing in on top 10.

oops sorry for the null points Dandy*, but thank you muchly for the gold! Thanks also to Ansel, Scene, Rollo and Chez for the other points so far.

I originally confirmed 'Yes' which I listen to more these days from the same album The Holy Bible, but considered this to be more powerful. As Severin pointed out in the earlier thread, The Manics were at odds with any kind of Britpop scene at this stage, but they have been connected with the movement and this album has had the longest lasting impact of theirs for me.

Sorry am not doing too well with the multitasking oop!

Great pick from Jester, I really enjoyed the His N Hers album when listening through it on SyncTube a while back but this song wasn't on the version we listened to so still new to me but definitely up there with the best from the rest of the era. Also loved Jim and Dandy's entries, I paid more attention to the lyrics of the Manics song on second listen which made it hit even harder (</3) and thought the Super Furry Animals song was probably the catchiest one in the contest.

VOTE TEN: Brer

Track: Animals That Swim - Pink Carnations

12 Ash - Petrol

10 Pulp - Your Sister's Clothes

8 Manic Street Preachers - 4st 7lb

7 Rialto - Monday Morning 5.19

6 Super Furry Animals - Hermann ♥'s Pauline

5 The Auteurs - Lenny Valentino

4 Dubstar - No More Talk

3 Feeder - High

2 Silver Sun - Lava

1 Suede - Europe Is Our Playground

I at least quite liked all of these songs after a second listenthrough but will give particular commiserations to Salad and The Divine Comedy who just missed out.

Brer is next to step forward... and shockingly votes with days to spare in the first half of the results! I've mentioned it already but kudos to you for submitting a band that I'd never even heard of, but they had a good Smiths/Gene vibe to them so it was a really nice discovery. Brer's favourite track was Ash and the closeness of the scoreboard means that they rocket up to 4th as a result, but points for the top 3 also mean that there's a bit of a gap beginning to form maybe? Points for the Auteurs lift them on to double figures, meaning sadly that Salad are now the only ones yet to reach that milestone.

...and with that I'm going to pause until tomorrow if nobody objects as Imgur still won't allow uploads and the halfway point feels like a much more apt place to pause than the 14th vote

So will the second half of the votes shake things up? Find out tomorrow evening!

Thanks AH Gold and Dandy for the bronze medals and Rollo for a few more points so far! I went for the trusty method of looking up Britpop albums on RateYourMusic and scrolling down until I found a suitably obscure looking band to check out  (but still didn't manage to find one Severin didn't already know apparently haha). Low expectations for it but I thought this was a really strikingly morbid but oddly beautiful song, glad it's found a couple of fans so far, and currently avoiding the dreaded bottom 5 at least.

Yay at my votes propelling Ash to the top 5, quite an easy standout for me! Would have expected Manic Street Preachers and Dubstar to be a bit closer to the top as well, although I guess they are not far off points wise.

Fair at leaving the other half of the votes to tomorrow, good thing I voted quite early by my standards to be revealed in the first half haha.

Thanks Bré for the bronze! Animals That Swim are the only act I hadn't heard of pre-contest so in that sense perhaps the hardest to rank. Happy to see my eventual top three of the songs I didn't know pre-contest (Ash, The Divine Comedy, Pulp) are all in the top 10 at this stage, as well as both my own entry and +12 scorer Mansun.

Thanks d* just popped in and out from premier inn gloucester. Thanks to Mansun voters so far seems to be love or nowt so far. Happy to see rialto up there in 2nd rated it a lot at the time and reacqainting myself after nearly 30 years of not hearing it was delightful.

I was certain Rollo was behind the Rialto song due to its New Order likeness, so that's a twist to proceedings.

Not revealed just yet but I am intrigued how the second half will go.

VOTE ELEVEN: RabbitFurCoat

Track: Guest Voter

12 - Stereophonics

10 - Manic Street Preachers

8 - Elastica

7 - Ash

6 - Salad

5 - Silver Sun

4 - Dubstar

3 - Pulp

2 - Super Furry Animals

1 - Rialto

Always like to give top points to discoveries but that's hard when the top two are what they are. Looks Like Chaplin would be nowhere near my choice of song to showcase from that album, but as Word Gets Around is such a seminal album for me it'd be hard to imagine giving any song from it anything other than the full 12.

We resume this evening with a rabbit shaped guest voter. Mark gives his maximum to Stereophonics, yet another different song to receive the maximum from someone. He also seems to have a preference for some of the heavier tracks as MSPs, Elastica and Ash all do well here. Special mention must go to Salad who receive the 6 points they need to make it to double points, hurrah!

VOTE TWELVE: Dobbo

Track: Rialto - Monday Morning 5:19

12 Silver Sun - Lava

10 Spacehog - In the Meantime

08 Ash - Petrol

07 The Divine Comedy - Tonight We Fly

06 Feeder - High

05 Stereophonics - Looks Like Chaplin

04 Elastica - Stutter

03 Bis - Kandy Pop

02 Super Furry Animals - Hermann Loves Pauline

01 Mansun - Stripper Vicar

Dobbo was next to vote and in doing so we find out the person behind one of our current top 3, although sadly no longer top 2 as his votes push Ash ahead of him. High votes for Spacehog and Silver Sun push both up into the mix for the top slots. More points for Stereophonics means they finally look like top 10 challengers.

VOTE THIRTEEN: Severin

Track: Spacehog - In the Meantime

Hi

Our votes are as follows -

12 Manics - 4st 7lb

10 Mansun - Stripper Vicar

08 Silver Sun - Lava

07 Elastica - Stuttter

06 Stereophonics - Looks like Chaplin

05 Rialto - Morning Morning 5.19

04 Ash - Petrol

03 Bis - Kandy Pop

02 Pulp - Your Sister's Clothes

01 Super Furry Animals - Hermann Loves Pauline

If there was one person whose 12 I was pretty certain of before the votes came in, it would be Severin who I know loves the Holy Bible album. Duly he awards 12 points to the Manics and their superb album track (I'm biased I know) and it moves up to second spot as a result. His own votes push his track down to seventh at this stage, but hopefully he won't be too mad as he votes for all of the top bunch. Stereophonics and Elastica both move up to be tied on points for top 10.

Yeah my top score was no-brainer, after the top three it was really very tight and could've gone almost any order on a different day.

Just happy to see some people liking Spacehog too. I always thought it was a cracking track that inexplicably got ignored at the time.

VOTE FOURTEEN: Bjork

Track: The Auteurs - Lenny Valentino

12 ♥ Elastica - Stutter

10 ♥ Rialto - Monday Morning 5:19

08 ♥ Dubstar - No More Talk

07 ♥ The Divine Comedy - Tonight We Fly

06 ♥ Animals That Swim - Pink Carnations

05 ♥ Feeder - High

04 ♥ Mansun - Stripper Vicar

03 ♥ Salad - Granite Statue

02 ♥ Bis - Kandy Pop

01 ♥ Silver Sun - Lava

Bjork is up next with his votes and it's another new 12 pointer in the form of Elastica, moving them to within two points of top 5. Bjork's votes create a very good move for Rialto as 10 points for Monday Morning 5:19 with nothing for any of its challengers see it storm into the lead, finally seeing a change after Pulp have led for so long. It's all starting to get very close which hopefully is a sign that the contest was reasonably strong... and all of this is me avoiding mentioning that poor Bjork now finds himself in last 20th as the 3 points for Salad is enough to push them past his own song.

Spacehog was one of two songs I very much expected to be submitted when we decided on the theme that I thought were more well known than their chart peak suggested... although my theory was ruined during the listen through when hardly anyone knew it!

Thanks Bjork, almost a straight points swap between us - can't believe The Auteurs are in last right now! They had a song in BJSC recently which I wasn't a fan of but this song is miles better (almost sounds like an entirely different band really).

Great entry choice from Dobbo as well so hooray for that having the opposite fortune at the moment.
