I didn’t even spot Stay, that’s another favourite of mine and was somewhere in my top 10.

That's good for me, the three iffy ones alll out straight away.
I suspect certain voters beginning with J are propping up SYCMIOYO :kink:
I can be included in this if you use my real name :kink: It got 24 points from me!

And it got 19 points from me, so still another 24 points unaccounted for :kink:

Far from being their worst #1, I think it's their best, and it's also their only #1 that wasn't a lead single - coincidence I think not, the lead singles are typically more gung ho, and while I can get on board with that too ('Beautiful Day' got my +12), 'Sometimes...' (about Bono's relationship with his late father) is gut-wrenching, especially the middle eight.

'Hold Me...' is the one song in the top 20 I didn't vote for - I don't mind it, but don't think of it as a U2 song so much as a soundtrack song. I'd not long been following the charts when it had its long Top 10 run (by their standards), but didn't get any U2 albums until a few years later and haven't gone back to it much.

can't even recall if I voted for Sometimes, probably not

I assume it got to #1 on very low sales? 2004 was single sales at a lowest right? it's when Elvis was hitting #1 with 20K right?

A little bonus "how they did in my charts" for the top 12...

Sometimes You can't Make It... peaked at 6, a 12 week run, and "sales" of 327,950 so thats what I consider a strong also-ran just outside the big league U2. Hold Me Thrill Kiss Me Kill Me was a nice variant on Gloria Estefan's different song (minus the Kill Me). I bought the CD and it peaked at 5 and had at least a 17-week run. As I havent completed 1995 yet that's tbc but it'll a half-million seller I'd expect, so that's knocking on the door of the monsters. Beautiful day? Their 4th chart-topper of 5 - we've already had Discotheque, City Of Blinding Lights, Even Better Than The Real Thing - 18 week-run, 738,600 sales, so it's def top 12 for me and just one more chart-topper to come.

February 2005:

1- SOMETIMES YOU CAN’T MAKE IT ON YOUR OWN- U2 (30,359)

2- WOODEN HEART- Elvis Presley (28,377)

3- LIKE TOY SOLDIERS- Eminem (22,205)

4- SOLDIER- Destiny’s Child Ft TI & Lil Wayne (17,314)

5- ALMOST HERE- Delta Goodrem & Brian McFadden (14,368)

6- BLACK AND WHITE TOWN- Doves (12,895)

7- ANGEL EYES- Raghav (11,790)

8- ONLY U- Ashanti (9,533)

9- GALVANISE- Chemical Brothers (8,404)

10- GOODIES- Ciara Ft Petey Pablo (7,281)

30k really isn't bad for its time, although it did pretty much just scrape #1. Still, much rather that than a bloody Elvis re-issue!

(Coincidentally it was #1 on my 18th birthday!)

pretty lucky then, but yes, rather U2 than those Elvis re-issues
I think that Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me is a really strong soundtrack single, it suited the film really well

Sometimes... got some points from me, I used to find it a bit bland but it's actually a really heartfelt song, especially given Bono's personal reasons for writing it.

Shame to see my top pointer out, Beautiful Day is them at their most anthemic.

Beautiful Day is fine, I liked it at the time (and think I gave it reasonable points here) - sadly it is one of those songs that got picked up by tv to soundtrack sporting highlights and other such montages and as such it lost some of its appeal.

Oh wow so only a maximum of 8 songs appealed to us all? I'm quite surprised by that, I'd have assumed there would have been more than that given we were able to give out so many points

edit: also, the Fly is great, another one of my favourites
