Posted July 22, 20241 yr Hi all! This thread is the thread for covering Triathlon at the Olympics this year. Feel free to discuss all the ins and outs of Triathlon. Any predictions you may have, support for the athletes and anything else you notice as we kick off on July 31st!
July 22, 20241 yr This is definitely the event I'm looking forward to the most. 5 GB athletes will be competing although no Brownlee brothers will make it slightly less interesting Sam Dickinson and Alex Yee look like good prospects for medals in the men's event. Georgia Taylor-Brown is a good prospect in the women's as well, don't know too much about Kate Waugh and Beth Potter but given how competitive triathlon places are for the GB spots there clearly going to be good. Also just to note the men's individual is on the 30th July, the women's on the 31st and the mixed relay on the 5 August. They're early start events for British viewers - with a 7am start time. As an aside, I really wish they'd add an ironman to the Olympics. Edited July 22, 20241 yr by DoBelieveTheHype
July 28, 20241 yr Swimming stage of the triathlon familiarisation event has been cancelled due to the river's pollution being too high. They're confident it will be ok by Tuesday morning for the actual event but it could lead to the event being moved/postponed if not.
July 29, 20241 yr And for the second day in a row the swimming practice sessions has been cancelled due to high pollution. This throughs real doubt over tomorrow's men's triathlon with the final water tests to be done at 3.30am tomorrow. If the pollution is too high the events will be postponed and if necessary changed to a duathlon rather than a triathlon. Will be disappointed if either of those things happen as alongside the men's 10000m in athletics the triathlon is the event I'm most looking forward to.
July 30, 20241 yr Men's triathlon postponed until 09:45 tomorrow due to high levels of water pollution subject to further water testing. If the events can't be held tomorrow they will attempt to hold them on Friday.
July 30, 20241 yr Author Means a full on clash with a diving final featuring Fred Siriex’s daughter, that’ll be a fun choice for the Beeb.
July 30, 20241 yr Means a full on clash with a diving final featuring Fred Siriex’s daughter, that’ll be a fun choice for the Beeb. I'd expect them to put the triathlon on BBC One and the diving on the red button channel.
July 30, 20241 yr Eek at the Triathlon being postponed, hopefully it can still happen and not be reduced to a duathlon (feels a bit unfair for those who are best at swimming!)
July 31, 20241 yr That was a brilliant triathlon. Jesus that swim looked hard. And so many riders came off their bikes during that section. Another French champion and a British bronze. Also fair play to Flora Duffy for getting back in there and finishing 5th
July 31, 20241 yr Author Where did that come from, Alex Yee?. What a finish!. Alex Yee wins gold for GB in the men's triathlon.
July 31, 20241 yr Alex Yee takes the gold in the men's triathlon with an extraordinary burst of speed at the end to pass Hayden Wilde of New Zealand. Great drama in both the triathlons today, think having them on the same day is actually better.
July 31, 20241 yr That finish from Yee was mental. Came out of nowhere right at the end. Love the emotion as he took the finish line & bravo to his teammate who set him up and tried to get the crowd cheering to push him on
July 31, 20241 yr Only caught the running and the end of the cycling for the men's triathlon - good that it went ahead today but here's hoping they don't all come down with E. coli now x Amazing that Alex Yee came back at the end when with just minutes to go it appeared he might be dropping back to bronze! And well done to Beth getting a bronze too, need to watch back some highlights of that one as it was a little too early for me.
July 31, 20241 yr Well done for Alex Yee for taking gold and Potter for bronze as well. Seth Rider finished 29th, not washing his hands after using the loo not quite paying off then (or maybe it will in the coming days?)
August 4, 20241 yr https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/articles/cgerrl2w19ko A triathlon athlete fell ill but unsure if it's due to Seine's water quality
August 4, 20241 yr https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/articles/cgerrl2w19ko A triathlon athlete fell ill but unsure if it's due to Seine's water quality  They're suspecting it's Ecoli, so probably due to the water. If they've got any sense they'll call of tomorrow's mixed relay.
August 5, 20241 yr I was up this morning to see Team GB get a silver in the Mixed Relay, only to look later today and find out it was actually a bronze  Ah well, a medal is a medal!
