The Ankler has learned that Universal Pictures has landed the rights to Britney Spears’ massive bestselling memoir, The Woman in Me. Jon M. Chu, whose Wicked is about to be released through the studio, is attached to develop to direct. Oscar-winning producer Marc Platt, his collaborator on Wicked and the producer of La La Land is also attached. A source puts the rights deal in the eight figures, with rights to Spears’ vast music catalog as part of the arrangement.

The book has been the subject of intense competition in Hollywood. Earlier, The Ankler had reported that there was interest from Shonda Rhimes, Brad Pitt’s Plan B, and Margot Robbie. The Ankler has learned that Sony, Warner Brothers, Fox, Disney and Netflix all vied for the project.

Spears’ The Woman In Me has sold over 2.5 million copies in the United States alone, was critically acclaimed, and became the fastest selling in Simon & Schuster's history, and hit #1 on the New York Times’ bestseller lists in all formats: audio, hardcover and ebook.

Spears was represented in the deal by Hudson Management and CAA.

HOLY SHIT!!!

JON M. CHU IS SUCH A GREAT DIRECTOR! YYYYEEEEESSSSSS!! I'm so happy she's seemingly given her blessing too so I should think they'll work closely with her! I recommend 'In The Heights' and 'Crazy Rich Asians' (and 'Step Up 2: The Streets' :cheeseblock:) so SO much!

Sounds interesting hope they do her justice, she deserves it.

What do we think it is called I’m betting it’s Piece Of Me. If they are going to focus on her family and conservatorship Toxic would be a good title. Strong, Lucky and Crazy would all be good titles too. Guessing it will be a musical biopic ala rocket man and bohemian rhapsody!?

OMG!!!!! So happy this is happening and Hollywood producers are all fighting for the rights. :cheeseblock: Hoping it’s the perfect balance of music and personal life/career like Bohemian Rhapsody.

As for the title, I can imagine it being called The Woman in Me since it’s essentially based on the book. Overprotected would be an awesome title though.

Edit: or going along the album route maybe In the Zone. The streams! *.*

Do we REALLY want or need this? I think it's a bit similar situation to Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston where the quality documentary was enough and the biopic movie fell flat.

Is she trolling because she literally did an interview about the biopic the other week and about who is playing her…💀

The way he speaks about it is very reassuring! Very excited!
