And not a Beatles track in sight. Times certainly change.

The sales will be ruined by streaming weakening previous huge sellers.

That sour note aside thank you for doing this. To

By the way I would like to know why I will always you by Whitney is only certified 2x Platinum if it has around 2.8 million units.

If UK certifications are automatic, shouldn't it be certified 4x Platinum instead?

It was released before 1994 and the automatic certifications we get from the BPI now are only based on sales from the OCC's database going as far back as February 1994.

But the label could still ask/pay to update old singles before 1994 right? Because I wanna dance with somebody was updated to 4x Platinum this year

Next certification I Will Always Love You is eligible for its 3x Platinum when it reaches 1.8 million units after 1994 (or in digital consumption really). I Wanna Dance With Somebody's 4x Platinum certification is basically all from the digital era. We are never going to get "accurate" certifications for most songs before 1994 again.

Just looking through the list of songs recapped from 101-200, it's quite a strange list tbh, with so many of what feels like forgotten songs!

Finally caught up with this thread - fantastic work with the information and estimates!

While this list is dominated by the digital era, it's good to see many older songs making their mark as consistent streamers, though I'm glad there was still room for 'Blue Monday' and 'Imagine' - both with iconic chart histories carried by sales. I was slightly surprised to see 'You've Got The Love' still ahead of 'Dog Days Are Over' but I suppose the former was some way ahead on downloads (I'd started to wonder if the latter had missed out altogether, but it appear to be only missing its post from page 5). I should be able to join for the rest on Sunday.

Whoops thanks - let’s fix that!

Florence And The Machine - Dog Days Are Over

A long running low peaking hit from their debut album "Lungs" which re-charted in 2023 after being used in "Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3".

Estimated sales: 2.73 million

Year: 2008

Chart run: 23-24-33-36-44-53-44-48-55-56-47-37-34-24-25-27-24-27-42-55-56-56-64-75-67-61-74-75-74-/-67-/-62-/-27-(21)-21-29-31-37-/-67-27-26-25-26-28-36-28 (45 weeks)

You’ve Got the Love also had a pretty big boost last year despite not actually charting.

It finished top 100 on the Spotify Year End and only 8 million streams below Dog Days Are Over for the year.

I did read that. However "Imagine" has way more than 1 million on sales alone so wasn't sure what to make of it.
I took it as meaning a million based on a mixture of downloads and streams (i.e. digital only sales). Apologies if someone else has already suggested this, I've only just noticed the thread and am working my way through it. If this is what Alan Jones meant, then 1,348 tracks have passed a million on downloads or streams or a combination of both.

For context, 1,348 tracks have achieved digital consumption – sales and streams combined - in excess of a million units, the most recent to do so (yesterday) being John Lennon’s Imagine. The artists with most digital tracks with seven figure sales are Ed Sheeran (30) and Rihanna (28).

The way AJ has qualified the above, it sounds like he means those tracks have all achieved the million mark on digital consumption alone without the need for physical sales to get the tracks above a million sales.

We’re actually thinking to take a break this week and count down the second half of this a week on Sunday, the 18th, from 16:00 to 19:30. Hopefully that works for those hoping to follow along and / or join the listen-through!
