Back in the 1950s, there was a point where more than half of people who owned a TV were all watching "I Love Lucy" when it aired. In the US, the finale of M*A*S*H had over 100 million viewers at the time. Now that there's way more to do, see & hear, nothing comes close to this level of cultural penetration, and so even the biggest things going around can completely slip you by, without being a negative reflection upon it or you.
