The Weeknd debuting at #11 with a highly anticipated lead single is definitely an underperformance. No one is saying it can’t catch on but that’s not a particularly strong start
I’d personally say it’s a fine start for both The Weeknd and Tâte McRae to be honest. I think the songs will be moderate hits for both artists whilst not being their biggest ones.

Apple Music

#29 Tate McRae

#37 Nines

#45 Charli xcx & Troye Sivan

#59 Playboy Carti

#74 Teddy Swims - Bad Dreams

#101 The Weeknd

On the Apple Music app's chart The Weeknd isn't even in the top 200 and hasn't been for the past 24 hours  Definitely a glitch but idk why Kworb are saying that it's at #101 when there is no evidence to suggest that at all lol

I don't understand this viewpoint personally, because he truly has no precedent for doing any better than this on debut.

The criticism of Abel's debut is just simply non-sensical to me. To reiterate what others have said, Abel is not an artist with notoriously huge debuts. For 'Dancing In The Flames' to debut with 34K more streams than 'Take My Breath' is a big success for a song that was never really meant to be the lead single ('Wake Me Up' was and that sounds a bit more commercially friendly imo). Yes, The Weeknd is the 2nd biggest artist globally on Spotify (I assume he'll overtake Billie to be the #1 in the coming days) but this is by no means an underperformance and to suggest that it is would be ridiculous.
Doesn't help that the video is awful! Shot on an iPhone....you can tell! Looks like a school project.

Despite his global streaming numbers, The Weeknd doesn't strike me as the sort of act that has a really die-hard pro-active fanbase, the type who could put on several dates at Wembley and crash the ticket servers for example. I'm sure he does have a big fanbase who devour everything he does, but I doubt it's as big an active fanbase as many of the other artists in the global top ten on Spotify.

A large part of him being the global top artist (or second) on Spotify is surely because he has had a lot of mega hits over a sustained period of time that were globally successful and still being played a lot now by many different demographics. But almost all of those hits built and got stronger over time, who could have predicted Blinding Lights' success based on its first few chart weeks?

Imo, just because an artist has a lot of huge hits, doesn't mean they should instantly be expected to debut at No.1. It totally depends on the type of artist it is. A lot of those who do manage No.1 debuts have big, loyal and often younger fanbases who will very actively seek out music the minute it comes out, and where the music is likely to very quickly go viral on TikTok etc. I feel like The Weeknd has cross generational appeal, so sure he'll get enough instant streams from fans to do respectably on day one, as he has done, but then he's more likely to build as the song is picked up by radio stations catering to all the wide demographics he appeals to and the rest of his audience starts to hear it.

Wow linkin park dropped 7 places to 15 with 272,940 streams
Talk talk down 43 places to 75 with 117,090 streams having heard the song I’m not surprised one of the worst from Charli this year a, a whole lot of unpleasant noise. Who is this troye individual? Talentless. Guess was a million times better

Lol at Odetari potentially getting a crossover hit now, he's an EDM producer / rapper who's had a fair amount of obnoxious songs making the American Dance chart recently
