I’m not saying the labels are doing it, I’m saying that Spotify themselves are artificially inflating the streams of older songs which they can basically switch on and off as they please.

You can’t argue that those movements are in any way natural.

But why would they do that?

Imogen Heap 😯

Indeed quite an odd entry there at #196

The song itself was released over a year ago but is actually a mashup of two songs from 2011, of which the Clams Casino one samples an Imogen Heap song from 2005

Nice to see it entering!

But why would they do that?

Just by randomly adding and removing certain old songs from auto play at any time, I’m not even suggesting they’re actively choosing which songs are affected.

But you can’t look at there’s no way that 60% more people have suddenly actively chosen to stream Riptide yesterday compared to the day before, that’s just not possible.

Oh and as it were, Australia and New Zealand were completely unaffected by whatever this is, yet every other country sees this boost. "Yellow" did get a massive decline though so the two aren't necessarily one to one linked.

As to the reason behind it, it's possible that it's intentional, but it also might just be algorithm quirks. The sorts that can just happen by accident. I always suspect that no one intentionally made "Harness Your Hopes" by Pavement a big thing, but a Spotify algorithm made it happen.

A Milli Vanilli revival was not on my 2024 bingo card *_*

I see it's related to the Netflix series about the Menendez Brothers, Monster. Not seen it but heard people talking about it at work yesterday.

I always remember the title of the Milli Vanilli song as 'Girl I'm Gonna Miss You' as that's what they sing. I'm not sure at what point the "girl" was dropped and it became 'I'm Gonna Miss You' - it really annoys me when songs change title for no apparent reason. Anyway it's a tune so I'm here for its revival *.* ('Blame It On The Rain' is also pretty good but 'Girl You Know It's True' has to be their magnum opus).

it's related to both the real life story and the movie but won't spoil you, just go watch it

the song is called Girl I'm Gonna Miss You. must be Spotify being useless as per usual

Actually it seems that was the original title when released in Europe but it was changed to 'I'm Gonna Miss You' for the US release. So Americans will only know it by that title. Spotify is obviously using the US title - although there is also a version of it on Spotify with the original title!

I’ve watched the whole series and still don’t know the connection.

actually looking at discogs, the album version of the song is I'm Gonna Miss You in both UK and US

and then when they released it as single it was released as Girl I'm Gonna Miss You in both UK and US

Not sure if even that's quite true because I used to have the album on CD and I'm sure it was called 'Girl I'm Gonna Miss You' on that - in fact on discogs there is a version of the 2x2 album where it's named as such: https://www.discogs.com/release/408212-Milli-Vanilli-2-x-2

Anyway whatever the song's called can we all just agree that it's a tune and it deserves its resurgence :D even though it turned out that Milli Vanilli weren't actually singing on it
