Well my dear Buntonnettes, it is tiiiiiiiime for some Baby Bunton Rate ACTION :yahoo: :w00t:

giphy.gif

Who's excited???

Thank you all who voted. It's been a while since the last Emma Bunton rate, in fact it's been way way before even the last Spice reunion or even Baby Bunton's last few releases either :teresa: SO things might have changed quite a bit! Tastes change over time and it is safe to say that Bunton's releases have found a new 'appreciation' from the fandom on BuzzJack :o

It gotta tell you that I am a bit shocked at some of the songs that made it to the top of the list... That Top10 is full of surprises B-) But also some songs have really fallen down people's tastes over the years

But without further or do, let's start the countdown, shall we? :yahoo:

Emma Bunton MegaRate - The Results

#67 Greatest Day (England's 2014 Official World Cup Song)

Release year: 2016

Average votes: 2,03

No surprises here, this song comes last with only an average of 2,03 points ^_^

The song is a reprise of Take That's hit single, and it was led by Gary Barlow and Gary Lineker who gathered a huge amount of (minor) celebrity friends to record it.

Bunton's participation in the song is minimal, with Melanie C also showing up. It was a huge flop, didn't really go anywhere BUT it did give us a moment now infamous in Spice World: the song was produced by Elliott Kennedy, of Say You'll Be There and Love Thing times, and

shows Elliott, Bunton and Mel C hugging and seemingly on great terms. The video also shows Emma and Mel C talking with Elliott Kennedy about the 4 leaked Forever demos (they had leaked not long before this video was released). In that snippet, Emma sings a bit of the song A Day in Your Life and it sounds like it was a moment when Elliott was telling them about how the songs got leaked. The girls have seemingly fallen out with Elliott since, after the work he did with them as GEM leaked as well a few years later... Awkward :teresa:

#66 Sometimes

From album: Chicken Shed

Release year: 2003

Average votes: 2,84

At 66, we get what is perhaps Emma's song that is the least liked, ever. With only 2,84 average of votes, and meandering lyrics, it was panned by pretty much everyone when it was released back in 2003 as part of the Chicken Shed's charity album. Emma has been a patron of the disabled-led charity since becoming a popstar, with a group of children from the charity even turning up to both the Spiceworld Wembley Stadium dates in 1998 to perform Viva Forever with the Spice Girls, and then again in 2008 at the 02 to sing Mama. They also performed at the Royal Albert Hall with Emma for her Christmas 2019 show! It's a relationship that goes beyond 20 years!

Shame about Emma given them probably one of the worst Spice-related songs ever for their album. Perhaps if she had given them one of the Free Me rejects instead, it could have been a better and more successful partnership lol :arrr:

#65 2 Become 1 (featuring Robbie Williams)

From album: My Happy Place

Release year: 2019

Average votes: 3,46

The very first album track is OUT OUT!!! With only 3,46 average of votes from the BuzzJack huns, it is at the same time the most maligned cover, album track and duet of her career, by a clear mile

Not quite sure what Emma was thinking when she invited Robbie to join her to duet on what is essentially one of the most iconic Spice Girls songs ever. The fans rejected it straight away upon its release, with the production seemingly flat and Robbie's voice really not suiting the song at all. Plus, he is not necessarily someone whom the Spice-fans like, due to his history of being a mean bitch to both Mel C and Gerita Halliwell over the years. Heck, even Mel B confronted him back at the Brit Awards 2000, which saw him hide away from her (this was mentioned in Mel B's book Catch A Fire!). Where's the sisterhood BabyBunton??

It all started when Robbie invited Emma to join him at one of his HeartFM gigs back in late 2016 to sing that song.

. Of course, it is fun for a throwback at a random live gig like that and it was a cute moment. But then BabyBunton had to go and invite Robbie to record his part and ruined this classic! Robbie later mentioned that he recorded it at his house in LA, so they were'nt even in the studio together.

Such a classic song, which is not even just one of the most iconic Spice Girls songs, but one of the most successful singles ever by any artist, and one that helped cement the biggest female band the world has ever seen (and supported their message of Girl Power!!) it felt really reductive to have a bloke like Robbie Williams officially dueting with Emma on her own album... I'm still puzzled today about why this decision was made in the first place, since it is not even a good streaming song...

Another random note is that this was NOT the first time Bunton and Robbie duetted over the years. Back in 2013, she also joined him live for a rendition of Dream a Little Dream of Me

Anyway, very strange song this and deservedly OUT!!!

#64 Merry Go-Round

From single: What Took You So Long?

Release year: 2001

Average votes: 4,26

BuzzJack's least favourite bside is Merry Go-Round with only 4,26

Released as part of What Took You So Long? CD single back in 2001, the song is definitely more on the sugar-pop sound that people were expecting of Emma back at the time, as she developed her sound from her Baby Spice persona following the split of the iconic group early in the year. Alongside Free Up Your Mind, the two b-sides showed a much more child-like Emma than the single's main song itself - and Buntons' biggest hit. That contrast was to mark the style of the A Girl Like Me album itself, which blended bubble gum pop with r'n'b and guitar-lead pop.

Sadly this song is not found on any streaming/downloading platforms still today, as they did not survive the advances of the streaming platforms since the track's release back in the day. Now that Bunton's catalogue is slowly coming back online, maybe one day we will be able to download/stream it?

#63 Here Comes The Sun

From album: My Happy Place

Release year: 2019

Average votes: 4,57

Another My Happy Place album track and cover bites the dust! :teresa: Refered to by Emma as one of her favourite and most special tracks, it was recorded by Emma and the studio recording includes her children's voices in it as well. Emma also mentioned that the song is really special for her, as it was playing whilst she gave birth to her first born, Beau. Whilst beautifully sang by Emma, it was met a bit with indiference from her fans and critics alike.

Emma later played the song live at her Christmas Show at Royal Albert Hall in 2019

#62 Let Your Baby Show You How To Move

From single: We're Not Gonna Sleep Tonight (CD)

Release year: 2001

Average votes: 4,69

:)

Another b-sides leaves the competition  LYBSYHTM was another bubble-gum pop moment from Emma back in 2001. Personally I much prefer it to A Girl Like Me (song) and would have been better as the standout bubble-gum pop song on the album... but alas, it was relegated to a b-side of what was, at the time, Emma's biggest flop single.

Quite an innofensive song, it is one of Emma's least streamed songs, and one of the most forgotten overall. HOWEVER, it is the b-side that has been on streaming plarforms for the longest time <_<

#61 I Don't Know (Damage featuring Emma Bunton)

From album: Since You've Been Gone (Damage)

Release year: 2001

Average votes: 4,73

Emma's first duet with her partner, the f***ing so-hot-please-damage-me-daddy Jade Jones, was actually released as part of Damage's album back in 2001 and whilst it was not released as a single, it was quite well know for its time. Emma showed up in a variety of Damage live gigs over the years to perform the song as well.

and you can tell how loved up the two are! The song was quite r'n'b which matched the Spice Girls Forever sounds of the time, as well as what was popular in UK music of the early 2000s era.

However, it is not very well regarded by the fans, and sadly, it didn't manage to enter the Top60 of songs here! :( Maybe it was for the best that it wasn't a single in the end, though I could see it as a small UK hit back in 2001 if it had been released. Both Damage and Emma were still hot property back then in the charts, so it could have fared quite well!

Aaaaaand that's it for the first few entries! Next, we will go into the Top60 of Bunton's discography.

What do you think so far? Do these match your expectations? And what do you think of these songs? Are they deservedly out, or do we need to start a #JusticeFor type of campaign within the fandom?? :teresa:

So far we have:

#61 I Don't Know (Damage featuring Emma Bunton)

#62 Let Your Baby Show You How to Move

#63 Here Comes The Sun

#64 Merry Go-Round

#65 2 Become 1 (featuring Robbie Williams)

#66 Sometimes (Chicken Shed charity album)

#67 Greatest Day (England's 2014 Official World Cup Song)

Album tracks out: 2

B-sides: 2

Covers: 2

Other songs: 3

No losses so far tbh!

The greatest day of our lives isn't even Take That's best song so god knows why they re-recorded it. It never got released anyway due to Gary Barlow being caught fiddling his taxes and being called out for it.

2 become 1 with Robbie - awful, really shows how certain songs can be lifted by the people singing them! Spice Girls sound divine on it, Robbie sounds flat!

Here comes the sun - awful, exactly the same as Robbie on 2 become 1, Emma just makes the song sound boring and flat. Doesn't help that the original Beatles version is one of my favourite songs ever, I utterly love it.

OMG really? I knew he was caugh in a tax scandal but did not know that this song went south because of it LOL

Gary Barlow is such a waste of a man... I can't stand him at all -_-

Some more to close of the night :teresa:

#60 Close Encounter

From single: Take My Breath Away

Release year: 2001

Average votes: 4,80

Another A Girl Like Me-era b-side bites the dust

Written by Andrew Frampton and Chris Braide with Emma, this is almost as innofensive as Bunton can get. Another pop-r'n'b moment that fitted well into the A Girl Like Me era. It is a bit forgotten overall, and its low scores here point towards people not really caring for it.

It's not even on streaming/download sites anymore, so the only way to access the song is with YouTube fan upload videos with dodgy graphics :teresa:

#59 Invincible

From single: Take My Breath Away

Release year: 2001

Average votes: 4,88

Both Take My Breath Away b-sides are OUT OUT!! :o

Invincible is co-written with Brian Adams (apparently Bunton and Adams did a few songs together but only this materialised so far!), and it is a bubble-gum pop song that tries to be a bit rocky but falls flat. It's always been treated indiferently by fans and you can see why it was left off the album as it's not the best song ever

It's also not yet on streaming/download platforms, just like most b-sides from the AGLM era  But judging by everyone's interest in the song, maybe that's ok :P

#58 I Know Him So Well (Melanie C featuring Emma Bunton)

From album: Stages (Melanie C)

Release year: 2012

Average votes: 4,92

Now that's a bit of a shocker! :o :teresa: I Know Him So Well is Emma's lowest scoring single in this rate! Personaly, I was a bit shocked to see this so low, but it just tambled down the rate as votes were counted.

"I Know Him So Well" is a duet from the concept album and subsequent musical Chess by Tim Rice, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. Originally recorded by Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson for the West End musical and produced by the two leading men from ABBA.

Melanie and Emma take each of the roles and the duet was the very first ever released by two Spice Girls. Released as the second single from Melanie's musical theatre omage of an album, Stages, the single saw Baby and Sporty perform on various TV shows and live stages, which was a blissful moment for the fans of both of them. It was honestly quite special to see their chemistry together again on stage and in a song, as Emma hadn't released, performed or recorded anything for at least 5 years prior to this. They sound heavenly together, their voices blend so well and match perfectly.

The live performances were excellent, showcasing their improved and gorgeous vocals, such as the example below. Another cute note is that in the official video, Melanie C is dawning a Victoria Beckham dress! So technically, at least THREE Spice Girls were involved in this single :w00t: :P

Sadly, the song only peaked at #153 in the singles charts, and has sold very poorly. Still, at least for a brief few weeks, we got Baby and Sporty back together, and they have been performing live together ever since at various events.

I knew it wasn't everyone's favourite single, but I was expecting the song to be a bit higher up. Alas, BuzzJack got it to barely scrape the Top60!!
