Rod Stewart - Rhythm Of My Heart

Chart peak: 3

Mango 18, chartjack2 4

The final Rod klaxon blares out for this top 3 single from 1991. With its melody based around the old Scottish song 'Loch Lomond', it's a cover of a 1986 track by René Shuman.

“Rhythm Of My Heart” is definitely my favourite of the Rod songs in this, though I realised I could find 30 I preferred easily enough.

Captain - Glorious

Chart peak: 30

This was the biggest hit for Captain who have kept going intermittently. Their most recent single was released last year.

Faith Hill - There You'll Be

Chart peak: 3

jimwatts 8, chartjack2 10, JulianT 6

This was from the soundtrack to the 2001 film 'Pearl Harbor'. It returned to the top 10 seven years later after being performed in an X Factor audition by Amy Connelly.

I know “There You’ll Be” is Heart FM fodder but I think it’s a really lovely production and performance.

The Captain track was a really good discovery though I didn’t realise I gave it quite that many points haha.

Downtown Train is a great song, I'm surprised no one else voted for it :o

I'm a big fan of the original so for me, Rod's version is a big no no

Seal - Killer (1991)

Chart peak: 8

Severin 17, Mango 3, jimwatts 7, dandy* 5, Jade 2

There's a 10 point gap between this and the last song which is more than you would expect at this stage. Seal's new recording of Killer was released just 18 months after Adamski's number 1 single which he sang uncredited vocals on. It was part of the three track Killer EP.

Killer was the most difficult to rank for me. It's clearly an amazing song but I do prefer the original with Adamski so I couldn't bring myself to award it any more points. Certainly not a bad re-recording though, and I prefer the album version.

Seal - Prayer For The Dying

Chart peak: 14

jimwatts 6, dandy* 25, JulianT 4

Prayer For The Dying was the lead single from Seal's second album which, like the first one, was just called Seal. It seems he was going down the Peter Gabriel route of not giving titles to albums but the third one did have a proper title, 'Human Being'.

Buggles - The Plastic Age

Chart peak: 16

King Rollo 12, dandy* 11, JulianT 17

This was the follow-up to the Buggles number 1 single 'Video Killed The Radio Star'. The videos for both singles were directed by Russell Mulcahy.

Prayer for the Dying is FAR too low but I suspected it would end up doing worse than it deserves to. It's a really beautiful song imo, although I only really came to appreciate it when I got the album so maybe it isn't as immediate as some of the others.

Simple Minds - Belfast Child

Chart peak: 1

Severin 7, King Rollo 2, Popchartfreak 5, jimwatts 10, Jade 16

It's perhaps not a surprise that the highest placed of the four Simple Minds songs is their number 1 single. It's still their only top 5 hit. The melody is based around the Irish folk song 'She Moved Through the Fair'.

Just catching up - I was only 10 when Escala were on BGT so their version of 'Palladio' was the first one I heard, therefore I have a bit of a soft spot for it  an epic piece of music anyway.

Oops at only me voting for The Glam Metal Detectives - that was a pretty good discovery!

My thoughts on 'Killer' were similar to Dandy, the Adamski/Seal song is incredible but I knocked the reworking down for not being quite as flawless.

'Belfast Child'

Belle and Sebastian - Step Into My Office, Baby

Chart peak: 32

dandy* 17, Jade 4, JulianT 21

Trevor Horn became aware of the music of Belle and Sebastian as his teenage daughter was a fan of theirs. He ended up producing their sixth album 'Dear Catastrophe Waitress'.

This rate prompted me to get Seal’s second album on vinyl as it was reissued earlier this year… the production is astonishing on it, the clarity in particular between the various layers. It’s possibly my favourite Trevor Horn associated album

ABC - All Of My Heart

Chart peak: 5

Severin 1, King Rollo 14, Popchartfreak 22, AH Gold 3, JulianT 2

This was the last of the four singles released from ABC's number 1 album 'The Lexicon Of Love'. Anne Dudley, who would later join Trevor in The Art Of Noise, did the orchestral arrangement as well as playing the piano.

Same for me - not a bad song from ABC, just missing something the other two Top 10 hits from the album had.

Think I've lost 6 of my votes so far, but nothing from my top 20.
