To celebrate the one year anniversary of the debut album from one of the most promising new stars of today, we did a "One Year Anniversary" rate of this album (+ 'Good Luck, Babe!')

The first 3 songs to fall are ones I'm not particularly surprised about, bar one. 'Guilty Pleasure' serves as the albums closing track and I actually think this is a tad under appreciated! I feel like it gets overlooked when it doesn't deserve to. I love the tempo change during this song. 'Coffee' leaves us at #14 and although not a personal fave of mine, I always assumed this was more favoured to Chappell fans than this. It's a nice ballad with a really interesting take on it's situation, but for me, I think I'm yet to truly be won over by a proper ballad from her... which leads me into the song which finished in last place, 'Kaleidoscope'. Again it's a nice ballad, but not really a memorable one nor an interesting one. I love a big, power ballad and I just KNOW she's capable of delivering a powerhouse one soon....

No huge losses so far but I echo your comments about Guilty Pleasure, it did not deserve a 4. :( Same goes for Coffee. I really do love it but it gets lost amongst her big hitters on the record!

Before we head into the top 10 we lose another 2 of the slower tempo ballads. 'Picture You' kicks us off by being the unlucky one to finish in 11th place. It's a lovely song, but it's not one I often remember and need a quick play before I'm reminded how it goes etc.. it's nice, but like I said previously, I think it lacks that *something* that makes me want more from a Chappell ballad. One the other hand though, 'California' is an absolute BEAUT of a ballad song and is exactly the kind of ballad I wanted more of. It's got such an interesting production to it and it's not just a flat out ballad. There are layers and levels to it. It's really stunning and progresses beautifully all throughout and kind of leaves you feeling a little hopeful! I need more people to start appreciating this one tbh! It's probably (by far) her most underrated, imo.

I can't say I'm surprised that this is the bottom 5! I like them all though - I dished out some 6s and 7s for these.

So many of my faves out already, im a sucker for a ballad tho and knew I’d be pretty much alone in that, Kaleidoscope is absolutely stunning tho, last really?

 

Also obsessed with Picture You hence my 11 but not shocked it missed the top 10

The first two songs to leave us in the top 10 are 2 I kinda expected to do better, but I'm not *too* mad about their placings, personally. 'Casual' has never really hit with me. I've always considered it towards the bottom of the album but it's still "nice". I just never hear it or I will skip it if I'm not in the mood to listen to it. 'After Midnight' is a funky, disco-pop infused song. That genre has never really been anything too far up my street, but it's a cute bop - although it's not as "big" as it probably could be.

9th place with an average of 8.39. :o No huge losses again, but I do really like Casual and its video.

08. SUPER GRAPHIC ULTRA MODERN GIRL [Avg. 8.42]

The albums opening track 'Femininomenon' is the next song to leave the countdown in 7th place. A song that spawned a brand new word that the LGBTQIA+ community seemed to have attached to! It's a huge, uplifting, raucous, anthemic feminist pop BANGER! The PERFECT opener. The track begins quite deceiving though as Chappell gives us a stunning string intro and some beautiful vocals before she asks the producer to "play a song with a fucking beat" and it then quickly turns on it's head into this empowering ANTHEM. Just SO GOOD! 'Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl' is my favourite from the album! It's just so big, bold and chaotic in the absolute BEST WAY POSSIBLE! I love the spoken word 1st verse before it goes all OUT for the chorus which is just INSANELY CATCHY! EXTREMELY GOOOOOD!

Ugh two absolute highlights out in one go! :( Femininomenon is probably my favourite song to watch online reactions to. :lol: Everyone is blindsided by the chorus! SGUMG is just so cvnty I love it! "fugly jeans" :cheeseblock:

Hope Pink Pony Club wins now, a fair few that are left I think are a tad overrated, two of the best just out !

'Red Wine Supernova' manages to sneak a top 5 position! However, it is tied with whatever is in 4th place but places lower here due to no 11 scores! This was pretty much the first Chappell song to gain big traction and it's easy to see why. It's probably the most "straight forward" pop song in her discography to date but it's the song that really showed she has an ear for damn good pop! It also helps that the lyrics are quite playful and fun. Especially the "I've got a wand and a rabbit" lyric in the bridge. Kinky Chappell!!! Up next in 6th place is her 2nd biggest hit to date... HOT TO GO!. Pretty much a camper (somehow!) and modern day version of the YMCA... Except this song has substance to it and is an actual pop masterpiece! Not a novelty one off. It's so, SO fun but I am really surprised to see it not easily top 5 here... :o

I do love Hot to Go but she has a handful of better songs on the album (and GLB. :P). Red Wine Supernova is more of a shock to me! :o ROBBED OF TOP 4.

Afraid I find Hot to Go really irritating, it’s my least favourite on the album I think.

Into the top 3... we see the fantastic 'My Kink Is Karma' which seems to be the big grower for me. It just gets better and better and better with every listen I have of it. I love the subtlety of the verses before it crashes into this soaring, sweeping chorus. It's one of those songs that I find REALLY FUN to sing along to because those high notes are fun to try and hit each time. Such a fantastic pop song that deserves to properly take off in the same way her other hits have done! 'Naked In Manhattan' was the winner of the tie to get it into the top 4, thanks to receiving a score of "11"! This was the first song I *remember* being introduced to by Chappell (and I entered it to BJSC a couple of years ago) and I fell in love with it almost immediately. It perfectly captures Chappell's playful lyricism and that ear for a pop hook... so good!
