It's time! 2024 is drawing to close and, as always, it's been documented by some great entertainment. Soon, I'll be counting down my 300 favourite songs of the year, though we have some other business to attend to before we get there! This is what to expect, in order:

- Favourite TV shows of the year (sorted by genre)

- A brief look at my favourite movies of the year

- Hit 300 Awards: acknowledging a select few aspects of my music listening this year that aren't covered by my song and album countdowns, including Artist of the Year

- Top 10 EPs

- Top 40 albums

- Top 300 songs

A reminder of the EOY Hall of Fame. Last year, S Club's comeback single These Are the Days cruised to the #1 spot, while The Kid LAROI's first proper studio album saw him at the top of the albums countdown for the third time so far. Who will be joining this year?

2021 The Kid LAROI - F*CK LOVE 3: OVER YOU

2022 Harry Styles - Harry's House

2023 The Kid LAROI - THE FIRST TIME

A good place to look to see what's contending for #1 this year is, of course, my #1s list for 2024. There are still two or three more weeks to go, so more songs could of course join this list! The Kid LAROI has achieved eight #1s this year, matching a record he set in 2023, and he claimed the joint-longest runner of the year with GIRLS, spending three weeks at the top. Benson Boone achieved four new #1s for the third year running, and two of those also scored three weeks at the top - Beautiful Things and Slow It Down. A few classics made it to #1 this year, but unfortunately, Sophie Ellis-Bextor's Murder on the Dancefloor and both Girls Aloud #1s won't be eligible for the top 300 countdown as all three were established songs for me beforehand (but there's at least one classic hit that will be included...).

1 The 1% Club | Series 3

2 Michael McIntyre's The Wheel | Series 4-5

3 Ant & Dec's Limitless Win | Series 3

4 The Hit List | Series 7

5 The Weakest Link | Series 3-4

6 Beat the Chasers | Specials

Let's get this going with the quiz show category! The 1% Club reigns supreme for a third year running, just ahead of its return with four brand new episodes this coming week. Hosted by Lee Mack, The 1% Club isn't about general knowledge, but about logic and how your brain works, making it an accessible watch, and Lee's cutting, quick humour creates a lively atmosphere from the start. The second and third place shows have swapped this year, with The Wheel taking the runner-up spot. Whilst the actual quiz aspect isn't the finest example on TV, Michael's hosting makes it something of a comedy act, creating an unusual mix of genres that work so well together to create perfect Saturday night light entertainment. Limitless Win continues to be a fantastic format too though, with a more tense atmosphere as Ant & Dec preside over contestants climbing up the money ladder by answering questions with numerical answers, knowing if they've answered even 1 higher than the real value, they'll lose all the money they've accumulated.

The Hit List remains a consistent favourite, and I'm really glad that a music quiz has proven so popular and enduring on the BBC's schedule! I'm continuing to enjoy Romesh Ranganathan's revival of The Weakest Link, although I'd be happy to see it opened up to members of the public as it feels like the celebrity pool is narrowing and becoming repetitive. Last place is Beat the Chasers, which I always enjoy, but it's only seen outings as special episodes this year. A new series is set to air next year, and I'm already looking forward to it! Occasionally I'll catch an episode of main show The Chase too, though I've not included it here due to how sporadically I watch it. Of course, it remains an elite show *.*

ooh yay at The 1% Club topping out the Quiz Shows list once again, I think I discovered it off your thread 2 years back and I've since got my parents both as big fans of it too so we're quite eagerly awaiting the 4 new episodes coming this week.

I'll save bumping your old thread and post my faves of the 2023 top 40 here:

2 Marcus & Martinus - Air -> they really ought to have held this off another year if they knew Loreen was competing agh, I did quite enjoy Unforgettable though this would've probably done better

18 Kylie Minogue - Padam Padam -> was one of the best surprises of the year for me, it of course made my year end list too although none of Kylie's this year will be

26 Metteson - Waves -> ooh interesting to see this here now, it's in the current BJSC and one of my faves of the edition ;o

28 Rita Ora - Don't Think Twice -> I enjoyed this a fair bit more than the Praise You sample one (as a bigger fan of the original than yourself), shame that Clean Bandit esque dance strings production doesn't get you a hit single anymore

34 Troye Sivan - One of Your Girls -> hopefully a similar position for his Charli collab this year!

40 Troye Sivan - Rush

What a fab selection of quiz shows I've seen and watched them all (as you know :kink:) I think I would have switched the top 2 round If I was doing the one! The only quiz show I'd add to my selection is Picture Slam, I rather like it, its chill and tbh I'd do well at that in compared to the harder ones LOL

Thanks all for your comments!

ooh yay at The 1% Club topping out the Quiz Shows list once again, I think I discovered it off your thread 2 years back and I've since got my parents both as big fans of it too so we're quite eagerly awaiting the 4 new episodes coming this week.

I heard Waves was in BJSC! I would've entered it myself a year ago if I were still taking part, hopefully it does well *.*

TV: Comedy

1 Big Boys | Series 2

2 Abbott Elementary | Season 3-4

3 Mrs Brown's Boys | Specials

My favourite comedies often have a brilliant nuance to them, being able to switch between laugh out loud remarks and relatable, emotional moments that hit harder than most drama shows. Big Boys has perfected this art, and its second series was another superb dose of heartwarming scenes shared between Jack Rooke's semi-fictionalised version of himself, and his university friends, with plenty of hilarious cultural references from the 00s. Definitely a show that's due a rewatch - also the mark of a successful comedy! Second place goes to the consistently strong Abbott Elementary, which has shown no signs of slowing down as it powers through its fourth season like it currently is. Mrs Brown's Boys brings up the rear but I'm never ashamed to admit I continue to enjoy this show - bring on this year's festive specials x

Big Boys for me is the perfect Comedy show as it tackles real hard hitting stuff as well as getting good laughs in it

I’ll watch it on catchup as mum and I was quite tired last night

Waves ended up going top ten so could’ve been another Bellamia smash then!

I knew I was onto something! Unfortunately my love for BJSC faded a long time ago and I just can't muster up any enthusiasm to make a comeback :(

TV: New Drama

7hKSVRp.pngCLAGDVD.pngHCd0UYy.pngYsWx8QU.png

1 Percy Jackson and the Olympians

2 Lost Boys and Fairies

3 Baby Reindeer

4 My Life with the Walter Boys

A disappointingly short list for new drama shows this year - perhaps partly because I've not sought out as much this time around (definitely a new year's resolution), but much less new stuff has jumped out at me this past year sadly. Nevertheless, I made some great discoveries. Despite being aware of the Percy Jackson book series, I didn't really know much about it or the accompanying films, but the hype and trailer for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, a new TV adaptation for Disney+, really caught my eye. It could've done with a little more fleshing out, which its second season will no doubt assist with, but I really enjoyed the core trio of characters and the fantastic world-building, particularly in the early episodes of the season.

Lost Boys and Fairies was a limited series that aired on BBC1 earlier this year. It was created by Welsh writer Daf James, and follows gay couple Gabriel and Andy who begin the process to adopt a child. It's a really heartwarming show, but extremely tragic in parts too, and provides a real gut punch at the end of episode 2 - no spoilers! I loved how authentic it felt from start to finish, even the inclusion of the Welsh language throughout. Baby Reindeer was a tough watch at times too, particularly its fourth episode which was one of the darkest hours of television I've ever seen, even more so when you consider it's based on the true story of creator, writer and lead actor Richard Gadd. It's a complex study of some intense emotions and characters and it's so easy to see why it achieved such acclaim - on an objective level it's one of the best shows I've seen this year! It was a very hard watch at times and isn't usually the kind of show I go for but it was undeniably successful in showing the imperfections of every character, not just stalker Martha.

I'm a sucker for a cute rom-com type show, and My Life with the Walter Boys did a good job of filling that gap at the end of 2023. It follows main character Jackie, who moves in with a new family after her own is killed in a car accident. Jackie's grief is explored well, but the main focus of the show is the love triangle that follows between her character and two of her new family's brothers. It hits a lot of clichés along the way, and I find one of the love interests quite unlikeable which doesn't really help me root for their relationship, but I quite enjoyed it nonetheless and will definitely be watching season 2.

1 Emmerdale

2 Coronation Street

3 EastEnders

For the first time since I've separated the TV field into separate categories, Emmerdale reigns supreme among the main three British soaps. It's been a strong year for the Yorkshire-based show, tracing right back to the very beginning of the year, with a bold decision to kill off teenager Heath shone a light on underused and underappreciated regular characters, allowing the likes of Bob and Brenda to deliver their best performances in years, and young stars playing April, Angelica and Cathy got the chance to step up to the plate, succeeding with flying colours in portraying a complex and heartbreaking storyline. The real shining storyline of the year has been the domestic abuse and coercive control Belle Dingle has faced at the hands of husband Tom King. From small, subtle digs, Tom's abuse stepped up significantly to trying to get Belle to move away from her family to a remote countryside house where he'd have no support at all. It's been tough to watch, particularly when Belle's dog Piper was involved, but it's a harsh reality that Emmerdale have portrayed realistically and sensitively, and Eden Taylor-Draper and James Chase (Belle and Tom respectively) have delivered phenomenal performances that are richly deserving of awards next year. Other characters who have really shined this year have included Nicola King, Moira and Cain Dingle, newcomer Ruby Fox-Milligan, and of course, Emmerdale queens Charity and Chas Dingle.

Stepping up a spot from last year, Coronation Street has been something of a mixed bag, but I've enjoyed it on the whole. Though at times it seemed far fetch, the pyramind-like scheme of the Institute, toying with Leanne's emotions resulting in her pushing away her closest family and friends, pulled some emotional punches and gave Jane Danson some quality material for the first time in a little while. Paul's motor neurone disease was a touching and devastating storyline, complete with an exceptional special episode between Peter Ash and Daniel Brocklebank (Paul and husband Billy), where Paul decided it was time for his assisted dying plan to go ahead, before he decided against it upon spending time with his nieces and nephews. I've loved Dee Dee Bailey being front and centre of the show, cementing her as an essential character, alongside relative newcomers in Lauren and Lisa (the latter of whom beginning a relationship with Carla is an agonising slow burn, but their chemistry is superb). It's not been perfect - I do think it's a shame how Gail has been largely absent in her final year on the show, and I don't think she's getting the exit she truly deserves, but hopefully Christmas can rectify that somewhat in her final episodes. I'm hoping for a little more consistency as we head into 2025!

EastEnders drops from first to last, where it had been previously. After an excellent and focused 2023, 2024 felt a little directionless. The Six was a defining part of EE 2023, but it fell apart after Christmas as if there was no actual plan on how to resolve the storyline and it was made up as it went along. The show's relied too much on returning characters and "sensationalist" moments, which it often writes well (albeit Chrissie Watts' return was both unneeded and badly written - the scene of Sharon's arrest was truly atrocious), but fails to truly develop. Reiss becoming a killer is difficult viewing when Reiss was a difficult character to sympathise with already, particularly now Sonia and Bianca are both off screen as a result of his actions when they're the more interesting characters involved. I've found Linda's drinking storyline to be inconsistently handled, being picked up only when the writers remember it's a thing, but I've enjoyed the Knights' presence once again, with Colin Salmon in particular providing strong performances regularly, notably as he learned more about his real heritage early in the year. My favourite storyline of the year was Yolande's sexual abuse at the hands of Pastor Clayton. Angela Wynter got a deserved moment to shine with a heartbreaking storyline, that not only showed the impacts of Yolande's experience, but also delved into historic sexual abuse and the reactions many face when they try to report such crimes. I think EastEnders excels when it's at its most understated, which is why this storyline was so impactful, but others have fallen flat - and I worry this isn't something that'll change as we head towards its 40th anniversary episodes next February.

Baby Reindeer and Lost Boys and Fairies  I need to finish Percy Jackson tbf! Also Emmerdale on top as it should be

1 Lost Ollie

2 Alice in Borderland | Seasons 1-2

3 XO, Kitty | Season 1

4 My Family | Series 1-11

5 Keeping Up Appearances | Series 1-5

6 Skins | Series 1-2

A little recognition for shows I watched this year that didn't come in 2024! Lost Ollie was a miniseries from 2022, mixing live action and animation as it follows the story of Ollie, a rabbit toy, who wakes up lost, and embarks on a mission to find best friend, a human child called Billy. What began as a cute show with dodgy southern American accents led me to a tearful finale - I truly did not stop crying for 75% of the episode. A beautiful story, tragic at times but delivering on every emotional beat, with fantastic animation throughout. A real gem of a show that I found on a whim on Netflix!

Another couple of recent shows I discovered follow just behind. Alice in Borderland, based on the manga of the same name, bore some similarities to Squid Game, with its use of familiar games with life-threatening consequences for the losers, but the set-up was totally separate, and placed much more focus on its core group of characters. Some episodes were truly horrifying, but it was gripping from the start particularly thanks to Arisu, the protagonist, and love interest Usagi. I can't wait for the third season next year! Also returning next year is XO, Kitty, a spin-off series from the To All the Boys I've Loved Before film trilogy. It's daft fun, and credit to the writers for taking a show of this type down an unexpected route, which really pays off in creating further storyline strands.

This year, I've delved into a couple of old comedies that I'd previously seen sporadic episodes of. My Family was a show I watched a little bit of at the time, but wasn't a regular viewer of, so I enjoyed watching it from the start on iPlayer. Robert Lindsay and Zoë Wanamaker had fantastic chemistry as lead stars Ben and Susan and the supporting cast were lots of fun too. I'd seen episodes of Keeping Up Appearances when my mum watched them (she still does) and always found it quite funny, so was great to watch every episode in order to enjoy the ridiculous yet hilarious life of Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced "bouquet" of course). Finally, I've been working through Skins with a few other Buzzjackers, we've not made it that far yet but I've seen all of the "gen 1" cast episodes, lots to enjoy but some filler episodes in there too. Very much of its time so watching it for the first time in 2024 feels a little odd but it feels nostalgic at the same time, as I recognise some of the catchphrases from my secondary school days

TV: Entertainment

1 Made in Korea: The K-Pop Experience | Series 1

2 Dragons' Den | Series 21

3 Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway | Series 20

4 Gogglebox / Celebrity Gogglebox | Series 23-24 / Series 6

5 In for a Penny | Series 6

A new winner arrives atop the entertainment category, in the form of docuseries Made in Korea: The K-Pop Experience, which followed newly formed boyband dearALICE as they worked through a training programme at SM Entertainment, one of the most successful K-Pop companies. Blaise, Dexter, Olly, Reese and James were put through the paces on singing and dancing (at the same time no less), whilst they decided on their identity as a group and got to know each other. It was a fun watch, made all the more enjoyable by how likeable the members of dearALICE are, and how savage SM Entertainment's Hee Jun was - she made Craig Revel Horwood seem like a pushover!! Apparently a series 2 is being commissioned which will follow a newly formed girl group through the same process, I'll be intrigued to see how much I enjoy it with a different group!

Last year's winner was Dragons' Den, which slips a place this time around but I'm still thoroughly enjoying it! This series had a couple of guest dragons in the form of Gary Neville and Emma Grede, the latter of whom would've made a really great permanent addition I thought! Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway returned for its landmark 20th series, before beginning another hiatus to rest the concept. It was a really fun series, and it felt like they threw everything at it this time around, and the final episode felt like a poignant goodbye to a much-loved format, even though it's allegedly only being rested. Its spin-off In for a Penny brings up the rear, bringing the most chaos to Saturday night TV once again. In between is Gogglebox, a reliably fun watch, with a cast that I find largely likeable and funny. I felt like I'd tired of the format a little last year but my interest has picked back up in 2024!

Skins getting mentioned yesss! I started My Family too (I'd seen some eps when younger but not fully seen it all) but still on S1 so should continue it soon! As for entertainment shows. I seen Made in Korea! good show and all the others very entertaining too from what I've seen!!
