Bookending today's posts is Charli with 'Talk talk' at #61 and '360' at #56. '360' is a song that's only got better for me as it left my charts. It had a pretty so-so run, spending 3 weeks at #6 before dropping like a stone but it's held up well in my listening habits and it's Last.FM chart placement is more reflective of how much I've enjoyed it. Really fun song that gets you hooked on the chorus. It really deserved an official top 10 peak!

'Down Bad' has been one of the most successful tracks from 'THE TORTURED POETS DEPARMENT', reaching #4 in the UK and #2 in the US. However, I've seen a lot of people disparage it so I think it's still quite underappreciated. Taylor takes a leaf out of Madison Beer's book and uses a lot of alien-imagery (cue

) in this song which is an interesting touch and I think would go over your head if you're not paying attention to the lyrics. It's one of the poppier moments on the album which I really appreciated.

Her sister has racked up quite a few solo hits in my chart but Halle released her second solo single in April last year ('In Your Hands') and it really didn't click with me. Going into her third single 'Because I Love You' I didn't have too high hopes but I ended up being blown away by how good it was. Written with RAYE, it certainly gives off strong vibes of hers, especially with her also providing backing vocals too. I do hope that we get some more music by Chole x Halle again soon but this has won me over with hoping for a solo album first.

Aside from in the music video for 'we can't be friends', the eponymous track from 'eternal sunshine' is where we get the most direct references to the film that inspired it's title. What I love about the chorus and especially the line "you're just my eternal sunshine" is how beautiful it sounds to someone unaware, but, if you've seen the film, you'd realise how deep and painful the line actually is. Starting with a clip of Ari laughing (potentially with Mac?) also plays well into the idea of being haunted by past memories. It's really interesting for a song to play with the thematical elements of a film like this but it Ari makes it work so brilliantly.

It feels obligatory when discussing anything Kanye-related in positive terms now to mention how despicable of a person he has become. I actively go against every single thing he's said since in the past 10 years and I'd understand why anyone would struggle to listen to his music anymore.

 

Now on to the actual song. There's been some great moments sprinkled in here and there but I don't really think any post-'Ye' release from Kanye has really felt like it's came from the same artist who changes the sound of Hip-Hop and released so many classics in the 00s. However, I think when everyone listened to 'VULTURES 1' for the first time and 'BURN' came on, we all thought simultaneously, is the old Kanye back? From Ty's amazing hook kicking us off, this sounds like a proper throwback and feelslike it could have easily been a lost track from 'The Collage Dropout'. Kanye also feels focus on a verse for the first time in a long time and drops some memorable lines (in a positive sense!). What stopped this from being a lot higher in this list is the fact that it's so short. Coming in at under 2 minutes when it could have easily had 3 verses and lasted 5 minutes and everyone would have been happy. This is easily the BEST song Kanye has released in a long time but it's brief runtime is what means that there's another song from the album still to come while this has missed my top 50.

Seeing us into the halfway stage of the countdown is Leah Kate with the presumed lead to her upcoming album 'What Girls Do'. I actually met Leah Kate last year before her show in Manchester having previously seen her live as a support act for Madison Beer just when '10 Things I Hate About You' was blowing up. During that show, she performed this track and filmed a TikTok video to hype it's release. This feels like a throwback to the pop music of the previous decade and I was all here for it. It did take me a few listens but this slaps so hard and is easily one of her best.

We're kicking off the top half of the countdown with today's final entry, 'Red Wine Supernova' by Chappell Roan. This was definitely my favourite track of hers while it was charting so I was quite disappointed that it fell out of her top 3 eligible songs just when it was looking like it would receive a new peak. Dan Nigro has really been at the forefront of 2020s pop music and I really enjoy his production here, it really sounds nothing like anything else what was in the charts. Although technically I guess it should be for 2023, but 'I heard you like magic, I've got a wand and a rabbit" might be the lyric of the year for me.

I wanted to put this higher but I just couldn't justify it. This was released in December 2023 and I first heard it in January when the album was released and it's still sounding fresh to my ears. Benny has had a massive year for me but it's actually the featured artist, Stove God Cooks that makes this the best song from the album. In a way, Stove God reminds me JID in the way that he has such a unique way of approaching the beat with animated inflections and fun adlibs. Hit-Boy is doing his thing on the production again and plays it's part in making this the catchiest Hip-Hop song of last year for me.

In the year where his commercial appeal seemed to suddenly evaporate, Lil Nas X manages to bag himself a first entry in my countdowns as a feature on Camila Cabello's 'He Knows'. The third and final entry from Camila this year, this managed three weeks at #2 in my chart (all behind 'beabadoobee's 'Take A Bite) but it never really felt like as much of a hit for me as that chart run suggests and it missed the EOY top 40. Just like with Eem Triplin, Lil Nas X certainly provides better assistance than Playboi Carti did. Built around a sample of Ojerime's 'Give It Up 2 Me', I think the sample feels like it's from a much more iconic song than it actually is which makes it an inspired choice. Lil Nas X's intro reminds me so much of Kanye on 'Feel The Love' which makes is no bad thing.

Perrie became the third Little Mix member to release a solo track and it just about managed an official top 10 peak. It went a bit better in my chart, reaching #3 and managed to stick around well afterwards. Out of all of their debut singles, I think this one sticks to the formula the most and sounds the most like something Little Mix might have recorded. It's just a well crafted pop song, joyfully uptempo, effortlessly catchy and gives Perrie an opportunity to show off her impressive vocals. It was actually penned by Ed Sheeran which makes me wonder why it's so rare for me to write songs for himself that I enjoy this much. Unlike most, I actually preferred one of her follow-ups which is still to come.

Another song from 'BRAT' where most of it's popularity came from it's remix where I actually preferred the original version. The Lorde remix was, of course, an amazing moment and it's fascinating to hear her view of the situation in her verse but I just think that, on a pure musicality level, the song didn't sound as good. It was a case of substance over style :lol: Away from the lyrical content, this did feel like a bit of a throwback to 'Pop 2' which I was happy with because I've been enjoying that album a lot over the past few years. I do have to warn you that there's a 90% chance you'll suffer an epileptic attack if you watch the lyric video I've linked above.

Rebecca Black can't quite make it three consecutive years with EOY Top 40 hits but she came very close with October release 'TRUST!'. I really never foresaw myself becoming such a big fan of Rebecca Black but here we are, I even bought tickets to see her in March (I previously saw her live briefly at the BLACKPINK Hyde Park show). 'TRUST' is a really energetic and infectious club-ready track that's guaranteed to get you moving. I'm glad she's starting to get recognition outside of 'Friday' and hopefully soon people won't automatically mention that song every time her name comes up. I'm looking forward to hear what the EP bring and I was disappointed that it's been pushed back a week.

Even while it massively outperforming where it's metrics in my points chart and last.fm chart would suggest, this still feels far too low and it's been robbed of a higher peak. This is the opening track to the album and I cannot think of a better way to welcome you in. Sampling Aretha Franklin for the hook, this song is a celebration of legendary African-Americans and their impact on the world. It's a beautifully positive track and it really feels like Common is just blessing us with his words. Pete Rock is killing it on the production too, the trumpets are a perfect fit. It's the definition of soul and the first thing we hear on the album being Common saying 'From the stellar regions of the soul' in the most apt way to start. The nostalgic video sees plenty of video footage of Common's life and just feels warm to watch.

The second-to-last ITZY solo-er to dop down is RYUJIN with her track 'Run Away'. I do think this the chorus to this is the catchiest of all the solo tracks. Following ITZY for a while now, RYUJIN always like the most popular member (I've just checked their Instagram and she has the mostn followers) so there's no surprise to me that she got the most 'hit' sounding track. Like all of these ITZY solo tracks, the video is only for half of the song. In fact, what makes this more impressive is the fact that the week where this peaked at #2 in my chart was before the full track was released. So it was purely off this shorter video version! Just shows the power of that hook.

From one K-Pop girl-solo release from a K-Pop girlband member who's name begins with 'R' to another as Rosé's 'toxic till the end' lands at #42. This is definitely a victim of it's December release as it has already bagged another 2 weeks at #1 in 2025 and 5 weeks at top spot makes it 2024's longest running #1 hit in my chart. This is the first of 6 BLACKPINK solo tracks in this countdown and had this been released a week earlier, all of them might have been in the top 40. This was probably the most generic out of Rosé's three singles last year but there's a reason why this sound is so popular and it's because it bangs. I'm probably enjoying this more now than I did when I first heard it so who knows how high it could have ended up it it had been the lead single instead.

The last post today and just missing out on the 'BBC Radio 1' positions is Chappell Roan's 'HOT TO GO!'. When they were both in my chart, I was preferring 'Red Wine Supernova' at the time but this has been a rare case of hearing this song out-and-about not making it sound overplayed to me but actually making me enjoy it more. A cheerleading inspired chorus and accompanying dance move (the new YMCA) proved to be a stroke of genius in helping it catch the ear and go ultra-viral. I'm really enjoying a current wave of really fun pop songs of which Chappell seems to be at the forefront .

46. Charli xcx - Girl, so confusing (wow preferring the original to the Lorde version is a pretty unpopular opinion but I respect your truth :lol: love the vulnerability of the lyrics)

41. Chappell Roan - HOT TO GO! (this went over my head a bit on first listen but was a huge grower for me as well, so much fun and I love the new wave-style production)

'HOT TO GO!' is my favourite from Chappell that I've heard, the synthy production is great and the bridge and chorus are fun - despite a long chart run, I couldn't tire of it.
