🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

Tonight's proceedings commence with Dua Lipa, whose 'Training Season' I assumed had missed the top 200 actually but then I remembered Marlon Hoffstadt did a bootleg of it which got a few spins from me as well. It was a bit of a step down from 'Houdini' which will feature a lot higher, alas. Still a solid pop tune though. Next up we have Peggy Gou again with one of her two new songs here and the only in her native language. Quite a fun song anyhow though she did this sort of thing better with her breakthrough 'Starry Night'. Boris Brejcha makes the first of two appearances in the rundown with 'Miracle', an unlikely collaboration with Leon perhaps although they both reside from Germany. It's not quite amongst the strongest of his work anyhow with the drop and break almost seeming like they come from separate songs. Both of the #1 hits from 2023 for Anamē will be repeat features here, first up at #172 the lush 'Anywhere', a must listen if you like melodic house and it passed you by. Last up one of a small handful of metal songs as that's now a somewhat regular feature of my chart now. The Dark Side of the Moon not to be confused with the Pink Floyd album of the same name had a breakthrough with symphonic metal epic 'The Gates of Time' last year before coming up on shuffle which prompted a higher re-chart.

Eurovision is back to start this section off, at #170 the Ukraine entry from Alyona Alyona & Jerry Heil was always tipped to do well even if just for the country they were repping however the song was certainly strong enough to warrant hype. Next at #169 is one of three entries from Lane 8, who came back with a new album 'Childish' which this instrumental piece was the title track of. The album certainly wasn't quite as strong as his previous which spawned his biggest hit 'What Do You Want From Me?' but still great to have him around. A song that sparked a whole lot of memes at #168 is the first of two appearances for Chappell Roan with her ready-made sing-and-dance hit 'Hot To Go!' - certainly a good bit of fun and helped her be one of the more interesting pop stars of recent times. At #167 it's an old song that got a boost from their lead singer having guested on a Tinlicker track as it was one of my favourite songs of the 00s, coming from Editors it holds up immensely still. Another old song at #166 although this one masquerading as a new hit as it got re-released last year with new remixes and I hadn't heard it before coming from trance producer Alex M.O.R.P.H.

Purple Disco Machine managed to get out-done this year by his imposters The Knocks at #165, helped a fair bit of course by Sofi Tukker for 'One On One' whose own material has been fairly sub-par for the most part recently so this was great to hear from them. At #164 it's another Eurovision alert from the Italian entrant Angelina Mango, 'La noia' was a great pick from them for being upbeat and by someone who could really sing too (UK ought to learn). A lucky YouTube trawl find at #163 from Uruguayan post-punk band Hangwire which had a big 90s vibe, their song later becoming my entry for Buzzjack's Nuggets contest. It's Fred again at #162 with one of the year's hangovers in 'Adore U' which remained his biggest track of the year as the follow-ups have ranged from decent to sub-par. Meanwhile trance DJ Luvstruck had his first hit with 'What's a Girl To Do' which is a cover version actually though this one's in a more palatable 90s pop-trance style.

A French collaboration between electronic producer NTO and pianist Sofiane Pamart at #160, they put out a whole album together this year with two tracks from it making the rundown, the single 'Loyalty' being the first being a lovely classical/electronica crossover. Charli XCX is next to appear at #159 however it's not at her most brattiest, you may have forgot already she put out a loose single 'In The City' last year which was okay but made a lot better by DJ Heartstring giving it a trance makeover (and removing Sam Smith's verse). One of the year's most unlikely comebacks at #158, not even the featured Sophie Ellis-Bextor whose own track will feature higher, but for it being the first top 10 hit in eight years for Felix Jaehn. Certainly helped by the Sophie vocal though being the first song she released since the 'Murder' resurgence. At #157 we have Patrick Topping whose 2024 wasn't quite as strong as his 2023 but 'Energy' did have just that for a few weeks at least. Aaron Hibell has a big breakthrough track to feature later but for now the follow-up hit at #156 which saw him go in a more afro-house direction in 'Set Me Free'.

🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

At #155 we have one of the last musical surprises of 2023 having had a very late December release. It was Justin Mylo seemingly coming from nowhere to put out a right banger, having only charted before with Martin Garrix collabs, with a lot of thanks to Karen Harding putting in one of her best vocal performances. A trance anthem next up being the first of two appearances from Russian DJ Alexander Popov, 'Rise Again' is a fairly standard vocal trance effort but great at the job it is. At #153 another trance song and one you may be more familiar with, in its original guise at least. Gareth Emery took on the Robert Miles tune 'Fable' making it a more energetic and ravey anthem and yes I am glad it wasn't quite another 'Children' remake. Smash Into Pieces could've been another Eurovision alert however Sweden let us rock fans down and they didn't quite manage to win the selection process. Regardless they appear at #152 improving on their prior year's effort. Meanwhile we're back to trance again at #151 and it's the year's biggest hit for Egyptian duo Aly & Fila with another solid vocal trance effort though I wish they'd do another real anthemic tune again at some point as it's now been 4 years since their huge 'Somebody Loves You'.

🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

Not quite so great of a year it has been for Calvin Harris as his sole appearance in the hottest 200 is at #150 with 'Free'. A solidly decent dance track, but comparatively to his other collabs with Ellie Goulding quite the disappointment (let's not forget 'Miracle' was at #2 in last year's list!). One can only hope that the release of the '96 Months' compilation means he is due to recalibrate his sound a bit for 2025. At #149 Juicy Romance makes another appearance with the sensual high tempo bop 'Run My Mouth' which was in a similar position in last year's list. Another leftover from the prior year at #148 quite the opposite thematically it remains the sole hit here for Mitski who had a lovely chart crossover hit unlikely to be repeated. Back to dance bops at #147 with Sonny Fodera - 'Somedays' was quite an instant catchy bop but ultimately it's just a part 2 of the much better 'Asking'. A bit of minimal house at #146 gave a hit to Flex (UK) helped a fair bit by its Nate Dogg sample giving it vitality. Flex doesn't appear to be making much of a name for himself outside of this though although we'll hear from Pawsa who also sampled the song a bit later.

🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

The trance supergroup Elysian managed to eventually get a reasonably hit with me by covering the Gladiator song 'Now We Are Free' albeit this version in English. It seems to be quite a popular choice of song to cover at the moment with versions by Leblanc and Tony Ann having also charted this year. Sultan + Shepard are back again at #144 with 'Memories' which led the final act of their album trilogy era. Another chart regular in the melodic house genre Ben Böhmer is up next with 'Hiding' albeit this is one of his lite breakbeat tracks assisted by a Lykke Li vocal. At #142 we have one of the year's breakthrough house DJs Selena Faider doing a great job at organ/piano house, with it sampling a royalty free vocal it was one of a number of songs with that vocal on it but easily the most inspired take on it. Finally a song that doesn't need an introduction, you all know it as it was the UK's biggest hit of the year from Noah Kahan.

One of the few BJSC discoveries in this chart at #140 from dark wave band Twin Tribes, the track 'Monolith' has a rather intriguing vocal performance and takes some 80s influence in the best way. At #139 a house duo who have been around for a decade now oh my, but Mr. Belt & Wezol managed their biggest streaming hit this year by covering the Whitney Houston song 'It's Not Right'. Oliver Heldens next up at #138 with a song that interpolates Hall & Oates' 'Out Of Touch' which works better than it should do. Nora En Pure also continues to score hits a decade post-breakthrough, the first of these at #137 is another string-laden instrumental track from her 'Emerald Skies'. At #136 a bit of a groovy house track from Lion Babe in 'So Pretty' (indeed she is).

One of the more club-filler ready tracks from Gareth Emery at #135 for his LSR/City project, 'Fck That' features robotic vocals mentioning various things we "should be doing" and then.. you read the title - it's fairly unique for recent Emery though not quite my favourite of his in the year. Another UK #1 hit up next at #134 from probable one hit wonder Gigi Perez, 'Sailor Song' took a few listens to get used to the vocal performance but it is a rather lovely sentimental song and fairly inspired in the current wave of people hopping on the country/folk-pop trend for hits. Bryan Kearney brings us back to trance at #133 with 'Angel Child', a six minute instrumental very reminiscent of classic 90s trance and a sound I would like to hear more of again in the genre. Likewise for #132 brought to us by Craig Connelly, 'Emotion FM' another instrumental banger and also assisted by a guitar solo which is rather uncommon for the genre but works great. Last up for the section Leblanc with the follow-up to his mammoth hit 'Palladio' yet to appear, 'Pulse of Darkness' follows a similar theme being a very string-heavy melodic techno instrumental.

🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

It wouldn't be a Lane 8 album without an Arctic Lake feature or two of course, the better of those from this year's was 'Say the Word' at #130 although it's not quite his highest on the rundown - a lovely chilled song regardless. At #129 one of a few afro house tracks that crossed over in a big way, with Hugel jumping on the trend (with friends), not the rather pointless Ellie Goulding/J Balvin version though. A bit of big room trance meets classical up next from Alexander Popov who samples Vivaldi's classic "Winter" in a rather inspired way. Meanwhile at #127 the real winner voting public's favourite of Eurovision from Croatia's Baby Lasagna, the song clearly taking some inspiration from last year's Kaarija and whilst it's not quite that great it certainly brought the fun factor. At #126 we have a song that samples 'Gangsta's Paradise'. No, it's not that song. Instead a techno interpretation from Oliver Heldens' alias Hi-Lo of course because it's just a straight up banger all throughout.

Charli - fair enough, the original song as it was would've been decent album filler but nothing more. the remix being trancey is a lot more to my taste.

Mason - was very pleased to see this of all songs get a second wind, I of course grew up with it on its original release as its MV was all over the dance music channel but I guess Saltburn/TikTok clearly introduced it to a new audience as much as it was a bit of nostalgia for the rest of us - glad you're a fan!

🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

A big sleeper mainstream hit here to start off at #125. I do tend to prefer uptempo songs from Lady Gaga however one listen of 'Die With A Smile' made it clear enough this was going to be a huge hit, which indeed it was - being her strongest ballad since 'Shallow'. With its timeless retro feel and amazing vocal performance from both her and Bruno Mars (who I'm often not a fan of!) it did eventually rack up a decent run for me. The top song for Lane 8 up next - 'The Deep' is more of what we've come to expect from him with its lush chill synth atmosphere and a subdued vocal performance assisting it. A good decision for the focus track of the album which did interestingly drop all at once (uncommon for a dance album). At #123 a producer whose next album is still one I am long-awaiting, Worakls put out two singles in the year to keep us going however with 'Lueur' being the most recent and first one in this rundown. Another great electronica house track a bit reminiscent of his older material which was interesting to hear although I do generally prefer his more orchestral stuff like a song we'll get to a lot later on. Meanwhile at #122 it's another repeat as last year's mammoth trance hit from Billy Gillies continued smashing into the new year - he'll have another song yet to appear. At #121 it is the first appearance from perhaps my favourite new artist discovery of the year, it comes from German live electronica/techno trio Klangphonics who have five songs featuring in the rundown, 'Holocene, Pt. II' the only of these that doesn't feature on their debut album but perhaps ought to have.
