Answer Me - David Whitfield (1953)

17/10/1953 David Whitfield Answer Me

Peak: 1

Chart run: 12-8-4-{1}-2-2-2-5-1-2-2-2-6-12R(3)->14

Both his and Frankie Laine’s versions of this song reached #1 in 1953 - in one week they were even joint #1s. I prefer Frankie’s version and find David’s performance rather overblown.

13/11/1954 David Whitfield Santo Natale

Peak: 2

Chart run: 13-11-6-{2}-2-2-2-2-5-13->10

This one didn’t reach #1 at all, being blocked by Winifred Atwell. I’m even less keen on the operatic vocals here than on “Answer Me”.

Peak: 1

Chart run: 18-8-{1}-1-1-2-2-2-2-4-7-8-15-14-20-24R(2)-32-27-33->19

Adam was the popstar of the moment in the late ‘50s; and he had 2 of the shortest #1 hits in history of which this was one. This is a good tune and my favourite of those that failed to score.

Wind Me Up (Let Me Go) - Cliff Richard (1965)

I think it’s fair to say that Cliff’s 4 entries in this are not his best work overall - nonetheless the other 3 have managed to pick up points. This one missed the top entirely and was held off by “Day Tripper” / “We Can Work It Out”.

Peak: 2

Held off by Renée and Renato’s “Save Your Love”, this 4 track EP leads with a cover of “Blue Christmas” by Elvis and continues in that style. Fortunately he later did later make Christmas #1 with a proper classic.

Gutted I missed this, Greg Lake would have been my top scorer easily!

This was #2 in the first ever official chart and stayed there until Christmas, after which it did grab a week at the top. It’s a wartime style ballad but a really good one, mainly because she has a gorgeous voice. I didn’t want it to get 0.

Like “Answer Me” this reached #1 for 2 different artists. Guy’s version topped the chart the week after Christmas after Johnnie Ray took the Christmas #1. It’s a charming little track so again I’m glad it got a point.

This had been #1 prior to Christmas but was knocked off by “Moon River”. I don’t especially care for most of Frankie’s crooning but this song is excellent so I threw it a score.

This had already been #1 for a few weeks near the end of 1973 and was knocked off by Christmas week by Slade’s “Merry Xmas Everybody”. It was the 2nd of his 3 chart toppers.

This was stuck at #2 behind “Mary’s Boy Child”. Unfortunately it isn’t on Spotify and the only YouTube version seems to be a live performance with cheering, but it’s a nice traditional song.

A charity single in response to the Dunblane massacre; this reached #1 the week before Christmas before being knocked off by “2 become 1”. Some sources list it as a double A side with “Throw These Guns Away”, but that track is virtually untraceable.
