Biography

Perry Como may very well be the most laidback figure ever to dominate American show business. In a singing career that began just before World War II and continued well into the 1990s, Como was known nationwide as “the man who invented casual,” as fellow crooner Bing Crosby once put it. There was undeniable power behind his baritone, but he had a special way of relaxing into melodies as he would a well-worn pair of Sunday loafers. Raised in a Pennsylvania mining town, Como (who was born on May 18, 1912, and died on May 12, 2001) was the son of Italian immigrants and started working as a barber while in his teens. His father made just enough money to pay for music lessons, and Como eventually signed his first record deal in 1943. His easygoing charms translated perfectly to television, but he was just as comfortable in the studio—where he took on show tunes, jazz standards, Christmas songs, and radio ditties. Though he loved to play with alliteration and onomatopoeia in his more lighthearted hits—including “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo (The Magic Song)” and “Zing Zing, Zoom Zoom”—he showcased deeper strengths in ballads like “Some Enchanted Evening,” setting the listener’s heart at ease with a mastery of pacing and subtlety. - Apple Music

Biography

Cher is a master of reinvention whose only constant is her fiercely independent spirit. Born Cherilyn Sarkisian in 1946, she dropped out of school and relocated to Los Angeles when she was 16, meeting songwriter/producer Sonny Bono shortly after her arrival. As Sonny & Cher, they released smash singles including the lightly baroque “I Got You Babe” and the driving “The Beat Goes On,” and she also hit big with solo singles like “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” and “Alfie.” The pair became TV hosts in the early ’70s, and Cher continued to put out solo records that were pop dynamite: “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves,” “Half-Breed,” “Dark Lady.” She later plunged headfirst into disco with Take Me Home and tried rock on for size with the band Black Rose. Cher then took a break from music, returning in 1987 for the rock-tinged Cher and continuing down that path with 1989’s Heart of Stone, which included the anthemic “If I Could Turn Back Time.” A year later, her kitschy cover of “The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s In His Kiss)” accompanied her lead role in the ’60s throwback Mermaids. Cher continued releasing albums and headlining Vegas residencies, with the worldwide No. 1 title track from her 1998 album Believe helping define that decade’s electro-pop, her 2003 jam “Song for the Lonely” building on that legacy, and her role in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again showing that she could take on pop confections as heralded as ABBA’s. Her forceful alto and no-nonsense personality helped make her one of the 20th century’s biggest pop icons—and she’s holding on to that title as the 21st century’s beat goes on. - Apple Music

Biography

In the late 2000s, social media gave misfits and outsiders the means to carve out their own personal space online, and attract legions of followers by presenting the most raw and unfiltered version of themselves. And no artist personified that moment quite like Kesha Rose Sebert (born 1987), the brash, potty-mouthed, nose-ringed anti-diva who crashed the Top 40 through her wailing cameo on Flo Rida’s 2009 synth-rap chart-topper, “Right Round”, and then stuck around like she owned the place. At a time when EDM-infused maximalism was reshaping the sound of pop music, Kesha united club kids, hip-hop heads and indie hipsters under one festival tent through bratty bops like “TiK ToK” and “We R Who We R”. And she was also the rare omnivorous pop star who was just as eager to record Stooges tributes with psych-pop kings The Flaming Lips (“2012 [You Must Be Upgraded]”) as hook up with dance-rap pooh-bah Pitbull for his 2013 strobe-lit smash “Timber”. Behind the scenes, however, Kesha’s life was no party—a struggle with eating disorders and a nasty legal battle with her former producer, Dr. Luke, brought her career to a halt. By the time Kesha resurfaced with 2017’s Rainbow, she was being celebrated as an icon of the burgeoning #MeToo movement, and the album’s spirit of empowerment and emancipation filtered down to its non-conformist sound, which foregrounded the country, soul and classic-rock influences she inherited from her musician mother, Pebe (who also guested on the record). And 2020’s High Road found her reclaiming the more sexualised persona of her earlier work, while doubling down on her reputation as pop’s most unpredictable polymath—who else could trade verses with NOLA bounce deity Big Freedia, collaborate with Grimes and harmonise with Brian Wilson and Sturgill Simpson on the same record? “I’m not going to let something that happened to me in my past define who I’m going to be the rest of my life,” Kesha told Apple Music. “This record is me being like, ‘No—you’re not going to stick me in some box.’” - Apple Music

Biography

The music of John Williams is the sound of pop culture. His vibrant themes are indispensable to the magic of the American blockbuster, from the menacing two-note motif of Jaws, to the stellar pomp of Star Wars, to the poignant violin theme of Schindler’s List. Born in 1932 in New York, Williams studied composition in Los Angeles before returning to his hometown to work as a jazz pianist. His first break came with his 1971 Oscar-winning score for Fiddler on the Roof, rocketing a career that would bring back the epic style of orchestral film music that Erich Korngold had pioneered in Hollywood’s Golden Age. In the 1970s, he began two collaborations that would define his legacy. Williams' decades-long partnership with Steven Spielberg started with the director's theatrical debut, The Sugarland Express, and came to encompass E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Minority Report, among other movies. Williams’ other great collaboration, with George Lucas, resulted in the iconic music of Star Wars, whose influence on film composition has been immeasurable. His use of motifs, such as the adventurous outbursts in Jurassic Park and the heroic brass in Raiders of the Lost Ark, makes the music inseparable from the scenes it enlivens. But it's worth exploring Williams' concert music, too: A highlight is the rhapsodic and technically demanding Violin Concerto No. 2 (2021), for soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter. - Apple Music

Biography

There’s a moment in a 2020 interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe where Justin Bieber begins—quietly, hesitantly—to cry. “It was hard for me being that young and being in the industry, and not knowing where to turn, and everyone telling me they love me, and just turning their back on you in a second,” Bieber says, each clause kicking up memories like dust. The point isn’t to weep with or for him—he had more dreams come true in his first 25 years than most people manage in a lifetime. But he’s also one of the few pop stars of his generation to have truly grown up in public, weathering the cable newsification of celebrity culture in the internet era while still trying to develop as both an artist and a person. Even early on, you could tell he had his eye on the future, balancing a doe-eyed wholesomeness with earnest attempts at hip-hop and R&B, material that suited him as a kid with material that reflected his growth into adolescence and adulthood. Some teen-pop singers end up trapped in amber; Justin Bieber has, knocks and all, kept swimming. Born in London, Ontario, in 1994, Bieber was famously discovered when his future manager, Scooter Braun, stumbled on some performance videos that Bieber’s mom had uploaded to YouTube to share with family and friends. Braun, who understood not only Bieber’s appeal but the potential of the internet, encouraged him to keep making videos and keep the equipment cheap—an approach that not only helped Bieber’s growing fanbase to understand that he was still just a kid like them, but drafted a new blueprint for how artists could reach audiences in the digital era. With the exception of a voice change around 2011, 2009’s My World, 2010's My World 2.0 and 2012's Believe are more or less of a piece: the sound of a boy trying to stick the landing into puberty. Released in 2015, Purpose showed Bieber developing a more thoughtful connection to his material, including collaborations with vanguard pop producers like Diplo, Skrillex and benny blanco. After a five-year break during which Bieber underwent significant personal changes—including a detox from touring life, a diagnosis of Lyme disease and a epiphanic marriage to Hailey Baldwin—he came back with 2020’s Changes. “People have been putting me on a pedestal,” Bieber told Apple Music. ""I didn’t ask for that. Obviously I love making music, but there are a lot of people that love making music and they’re not in the position that I’m in. I’m just trying to steward that wisely, steward my relationship wisely. I want people to take a look at my story—hopefully, my words can make a difference.” - Apple Music

Biography

Singer and multi-instrumentalist Laufey brings a jazz-influenced, traditional pop style into the 21st century with soothing songs inspired by artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, and Chet Baker. Like a younger sibling to more contemporary acts like Norah Jones and Fiona Apple, the Icelandic-Chinese musician made her official debut in the early 2020s with her viral hit "Street by Street," which was popular on social media. Laufey's debut EP, Typical of Me, arrived in April 2021. She later expanded upon that with her official first album, 2022's Everything I Know About Love, which reached the Top 20 in her native Iceland. Featuring collaborations with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the sophisticated Bewitched followed in 2023 and brought the singer wider international acclaim, including a Top 30 placement on the Billboard 200 and the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. She also released a holiday EP, A Very Laufey Christmas, in 2024. - Apple Music

Biography

With a voice that galvanized Britain and a talent for imbuing ballads and bangers with emotion and power, Leona Lewis is one of the 21st century’s leading soul-pop singers. Born in London in 1985, she attended the prestigious BRIT School during her teens, eventually leaving the performing-arts institution to pursue music on her own terms. That led her to the third season of The X Factor, where her passionate audition version of "Over the Rainbow" invigorated the audience and the judges, jump-starting a run on the show that ended with her winning a record deal. Lewis' strong soprano was an ideal fit for the swaying soul/R&B that dominated radio in the mid-'00s, and her luminous 2007 single "Bleeding Love" topped the charts in 35 countries. Since then, in addition to acting, modeling, and animal-rights activism, she's appeared all over the musical spectrum: Belting the theme for James Cameron's blockbuster Avatar in 2009, collaborating with Swedish electronic-music powerhouse Avicii on the thumping "Collide" in 2011, and duetting with Cuban-American superstar Pitbull on the fiery "Amore'' in 2018. Given her ability to cross genres, styles, and art forms, you can bet on seeing Lewis shine for years to come, however she sees fit. - Apple Music

Biography

Lola Young is an R&B-rooted, stylistically dynamic vocalist and multi-instrumentalist whose combination of smoky vocals and mature songwriting has prompted comparisons to Amy Winehouse and Adele. Although the South East London native's 2019 debut, the Intro EP, made a significant impression, she experienced her true breakout in 2021. Her atmospheric cover of "Together in Electric Dreams" soundtracked John Lewis & Partners' annual Christmas advertising campaign that year, and she was also shortlisted for the 2022 BRITs Rising Star category, a distinction that affirmed her individuality. Following a handful of singles, including "So Sorry" and "Stream of Consciousness," Young issued her debut album, 2023's My Mind Wanders and Sometimes Leaves Completely. This Wasn't Meant for You Anyway followed quickly in 2024. - Apple Music

Biography

Nat "King" Cole made it all sound easy. That was the art of Nathaniel Adams Coles, born in Montgomery, Alabama in 1919—he hid the sweat. His family joined the Great Migration of Black Southerners who moved North, in his case to Chicago, where Cole got a jazz combo together. Influenced by the light, punchy swing of pianist Earl Hines, Cole pioneered a cocktail trio sound that was fun and urbane. On '40s recordings like "Straighten Up and Fly Right," "Sweet Lorraine," and "It's Only a Paper Moon," he emerged as a jaunty (sometimes) singer and first-rate instrumentalist. If he'd stopped there, he'd still be celebrated today. Good thing he kept going. With zero vocal training, he discovered that his conversational baritone loved a ballad and audiences loved his singing. He transitioned to a pop-jazz sound, featuring big bands and orchestras. This was night-on-the-town Rat Pack music; songs like "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons," "Smile," and "When I Fall In Love" were almost courtly in their manners. An early convert to Latin rhythms, Cole learned enough Spanish to become an international icon in the '50s. Cole died in 1965, but he was on the charts again in 1991, duetting with his daughter Natalie on "Unforgettable" and a Grammy-crushing tribute album. - Apple Music

Biography

Amazingly, Darlene Love, a superb vocalist, hasn't had much of a track record as a solo singer, at least not in terms of hits. Love was a founding member of the Blossoms in 1957. They did several sessions and were resident singers on the television show Shindig. Love sang lead vocals on "He's a Rebel," which was credited to the Crystals, and "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah," which was issued under the name Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans. She cut six singles for Spector's Phillies label, with "Wait 'Til My Bobby Gets Back Home" the most successful. Love became busy as an actress, but reunited with Spector for the 1977 single "Lord, If You're a Woman." Love appeared in all four Lethal Weapon films, and was also in the Royal Shakespeare Company's co-production of Stephen King's Carrie. Her 1990 LP, Paint Another Picture, failed to chart in America. Love later toured as a background vocalist with Cher. She appeared briefly on the soap opera Another World in 1993 and later went on to appear as Motormouth Maybelle in the Broadway production of Hairspray. In October 2007, Love released It's Christmas, Of Course, a collection of holiday songs. Three years later, she was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 2015, Love returned with the Steven Van Zandt-produced, Introducing Darlene Love, which featured songs by Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Perry, Joan Jett, and others. - Spotify

Biography

Ed Sheeran

There’s a lovely moment a little ways into Apple Music’s Songwriter documentary about Ed Sheeran in which Sheeran, jet-lagged and carrying a cup of tea, straggles out into a yard in Malibu at dawn, sits down at his laptop and begins writing a song about the moment right in front of him: the crisp air, the birdsong, the hot tea, the day ahead. He gets a full verse in, melody and all, then pauses. “Songs are weird things,” he says. “How so?” an interviewer asks. “They just come and go,” Sheeran says, smiling. “And they never give you any warning.” For Sheeran, they seem to come pretty reliably. Born in 1991 in Halifax, England, he started out gigging on the UK pub circuit before releasing his first studio album, +, in 2011, and has since become one of the most unstoppable singer-songwriters in music, forging a light blend of folk, pop, hip-hop and dance that feels slick but lived-in, intimate but universal. Whether on his own (“Sing”, “The A Team”, “Shape of You”, “Perfect”) or in collaboration with artists from Taylor Swift to Eminem to Justin Bieber, Sheeran has a unique ability to strike a chord that feels both bittersweet and redemptive, good-natured and genuine: the hopeless romantic who convinces you he might just be right. In 2017, he was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, touching Prince Charles on the arm while shaking his hand—a breach of royal protocol, and an appealingly human one at that. - Apple Music

Elton John

At the height of the fever dream that was Elton John’s life in the ’70s, the singer-songwriter had the optician Dennis Roberts design a pair of giant, sculptural glasses studded with 57 battery-powered lights in the shape of the name Elton—to the tune of about $5,000. Adjusted for inflation, you’re talking about something more like $25,000. But John had a show to put on, and wouldn’t that be something to talk about? The excess was always apparent: the rhinestones, the costumery, the old Hollywood glamour retrofitted for a new, gender-bending world. But beneath the feathers, John’s music—written with the lyricist Bernie Taupin—was direct and unpretentious, the kind of rock ’n’ roll storytelling that met you where you were. Even if you didn’t know exactly what it meant—who is the dancer, and why are they so tiny?—the feeling was immediate, universal. By 1973’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, John said they were writing a couple of songs at breakfast and recording them before lunch. This was pop music, John argued: You weren’t supposed to think about it too much, and god help you if you did. And yet here we are, singing the songs five decades later. Born Reginald Dwight in Pinner, England, in 1947, John took to the piano young, studying on a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music while obsessively listening to Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. They were so physical, John marvelled—they didn’t just play the piano, they beat it. He started playing in pubs at 15 and, around 20, met Taupin through a want ad in a music magazine. There were good years and bad ones, highs and lows—that handful of Valium before jumping into the swimming pool in 1975, for example, or the disco album, which John himself described as jumping on a dying bandwagon—but he has always endured, emerging from the debauchery of the ’70s and redefinitions of the ’80s bruised but never beaten, a gay icon, AIDS activist, philanthropist, Knight Bachelor, and father of two. In 2018, nearly 50 years after his debut album, he embarked on a three-year farewell tour, and published his first autobiography, Me, in 2019. The host of Apple Music 1’s Rocket Hour, Elton has been the recipient of countless awards (Grammys, Oscars, BRITs, Tonys, Ivors), has been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and, in 2020, was awarded the Companion of Honour. - Apple Music

Biography

There’s a verse in her 2021 debut solo single “On the Ground” that BLACKPINK member ROSÉ singles out as being especially meaningful: “I worked my whole life/Just to get right, just to be like/‘Look at me, I'm never comin' down.’” “That verse just hits me,” she told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “It’s just the fact that, literally, I have been working my whole life.” Born Roseanne Chaeyoung Park to Korean parents in Aotearoa New Zealand in 1997, ROSÉ grew up mostly in Melbourne, Australia, where she sang in the church choir and learned how to play piano and guitar, dreaming of becoming a professional musician. In 2012, she passed an audition to become a K-pop trainee under YG Entertainment, and she moved to Seoul as a teenager. After four years of a famously rigorous K-pop training process that includes singing, dancing, and language lessons, ROSÉ debuted with BLACKPINK—alongside JISOO, JENNIE, and LISA—in 2016. The hard work paid off, with BLACKPINK shooting to global stardom. Their debut song “BOOMBAYAH” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart, and was followed by other hits like "DDU-DU DDU-DU" and "Kill This Love.” In 2023, they became the first Korean act to headline Coachella. In 2021, ROSÉ released her debut single R, which included the breakup track “Gone” alongside “On the Ground.” The latter became the highest-charting song by a Korean female soloist on the Billboard Hot 100, and became the first song by a Korean soloist to top the Billboard Global 200. The song is a reminder of the importance of staying grounded in reality and being grateful for what you find there, even—and perhaps especially—when you’re one of the biggest K-pop artists in the world. - Apple Music

Biography

In the first half of the 1970s, Slade were the cornerstone of the glam-rock movement in the UK. Their penchant for heavy guitars meshed seamlessly with their knack for pop hooks and Noddy Holder's archetypal hard-rock vocal style, resulting in countless British hit singles and albums. By 1975, they had even starred in their in own film, the cult classic FLAME. The band had an unexpected comeback in the '80s with GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY POWER SUPPLY, which even broke through to the US, where Slade had never made much of a mark before. The band proved highly influential to both punk and heavy metal, but broke up in the early '90s, with the genial Holder subsequently becoming a UK TV personality. - Apple Music

Biography

Whether stepping to the mic or writing for others, Sia Furler has made a seismic impact on modern pop. Born in Adelaide, Australia, in 1975, Furler started out singing in acts there and later in London. Her early solo albums did fine—with 2004’s “Breathe Me” memorably scoring the final sequence of HBO’s Six Feet Under—but it wasn’t until she started penning songs for other artists that her career took off. Furler’s writing made for some of the most bright-lined, all-caps pop of the 2010s, delivered by Beyoncé (“Pretty Hurts”), Britney Spears (“Perfume”), Katy Perry (“Double Rainbow”) and Rihanna (“Diamonds”). She answered that winning streak by belting out 2014’s “Chandelier”, a cathartic power ballad of self-empowerment that went multi-platinum in almost a dozen countries. Proving that it and the same year’s 1000 Forms of Fear were no fluke when it came to mainstream success, she hit her stride with 2016’s This Is Acting, a brashly exciting statement of individuality that made her two-colour oversized wig into an instant fashion icon that doubled as a shield against fame. Never one to follow a straight path, Furler went on to release a Christmas album, collaborate multiple times with EDM kingpin David Guetta and direct and also soundtrack the quirky 2021 movie musical Music. Her 2024 album Reasonable Woman surrounded her with equally distinctive feminine voices—Chaka Khan, Kylie Minogue, Tierra Whack, Paris Hilton—while reminding us just how openly adventurous and stubbornly catchy her arrangements can be. - Apple Music

Biography

The Plastic Ono Band was a rock band and Fluxus-based artist collective formed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1968-9 for their collaborative musical and sound art projects, films, conceptual art projects and eventual solo LPs. The creation of The Plastic Ono Band, which began in 1967 with Ono's idea for an art exhibition in Berlin, allowed Lennon to separate his artistic output from that of The Beatles. Lennon and Ono began a personal and artistic relationship in 1968, collaborating on several experimental releases. After their marriage in 1969, they decided their future endeavours would be credited to the Plastic Ono Band. The band featured a rotating line-up of musicians including Eric Clapton, Klaus Voormann, Alan White, Billy Preston, Jim Keltner, Keith Moon, Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, and Lennon's former Beatles bandmates George Harrison and Ringo Starr. After Lennon and Ono moved to New York in 1971, they collaborated with Elephant's Memory under the name "Plastic Ono Elephant's Memory Band". Lennon's collaborations continued under similar names until 1974. From 2009 to 2015, Ono and her son Sean Lennon led a new incarnation of the group, the Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band. - Wikipedia
