Biography

No one straddles the middle ground between R&B and rap quite like Bryson Tiller. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1993, the singer and MC is a self-made superstar, having built his fanbase organically online before inking a deal for his first album, 2015’s T R A P S O U L. That title spells out Tiller’s artistic vision, and on the album’s best moments he lands somewhere between Lil Wayne and Omarion, his two biggest inspirations. While he’s indebted to the artists he grew up listening to, Tiller has carved out his own niche. His voice is classically beautiful but he stands out in addition to that, thanks to the way he’s able to mutate it depending on the style of music. Rocketing to the A-list with his star turn alongside Rihanna on DJ Khaled’s 2017 smash “Wild Thoughts”, Tiller continued to cultivate his multitiered approach on the same year’s True to Self. His 2020 album A N N I V E R S A R Y—named for its release exactly five years after his debut—consolidated his personal preferences even further, featuring only one guest in the form of Drake (and Big Sean on the deluxe edition). His penchant for putting a modern spin on stone-cold classics yielded the heartfelt 2021 holiday outing A Different Christmas, before stretching his already elastic vocals across the assorted stylistic backdrops of his self-titled 2024 LP. He had first planned to make three separate albums focusing on pop, rap and R&B, respectively, but instead he brought all those facets together in one organic place. The result is a hybrid creation that feels both familiar and forward-looking. “I feel like I needed to open up those new doors with these songs,” he tells Apple Music. “I was ready to try new things.” - Apple Music

Biography

Talk about an unexpected career trajectory. In 2007, 23-year-old Calvin Harris released I Created Disco, a cheeky shot across dance music’s bow that presented him as Scotland’s brow-arched answer to LCD Soundsystem. Fast-forward a few years, and the scruffy fellow playing house-party host in the “Merrymaking at My Place” video is suddenly baring oil-slicked abs on Emporio Armani billboards. What happened, of course, is that Harris (born Adam Richard Wiles in 1984) traded up from the Amiga computer of his teens, developed some of the best studio chops in the business with deep-house rollers like 2013’s “Thinking About You,” and helped spark EDM’s pop crossover with hits for Rihanna, Florence Welch, Ellie Goulding, and others. Along the way, he became one of the 2010s’ first DJ/producer/songwriter polymaths to earn top billing even on the songs in which he didn’t sing. No stranger to pyro-lit main stages—his percussive, synth-strafed 2014 single “C.U.B.A” is big-room house at its most gargantuan—Harris has resisted getting boxed into any one sound. On 2017’s Funk Wav Bounces, Vol. 1, he lays down a set of slinky R&B jams for Frank Ocean, Migos, and Young Thug, while the 2018 singles “Promises,” with Sam Smith, and “One Kiss,” with Dua Lipa, proved just how versatile his vision of pop can be. And for anyone needing more proof, look no further than Harris’ return to the studio with Goulding—“Miracle” and “Free”—both of which appear on 2024’s 96 Months and revel in ’90s trance and breakbeat hardcore vibes. - Apple Music

Hmm don't miss either of those much. 2024 the first year not ending in "0" that Calvin hasn't had a Top 10 hit since 2006.

Whatever She Wants - certainly helped by the strings there, a good choice to be his biggest hit in years

Lovers in a Past Life - one of Calvin's weakest, I really hope he has a sound recalibration for 2025

 Missed the top 100 this year

Biography

Chappell Roan specializes in jubilant, femme-positive pop that combines a strong romantic streak with a hunger for grand experiences. Kayleigh Rose Amstutz (born in 1998 in Willard, MO) began posting cover-song videos online in her teens, and after releasing her first EP, School Nights, in 2017, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her pop-star dreams. In early 2020 she connected with producer Dan Nigro, and that April she released “Pink Pony Club,” a torchy ballad about thriving at “a special place/where boys and girls can all be queens every single day.” Roan released a smattering of singles, including the writhing “My Kink Is Karma” and the yearning “Casual,” before putting out her first full-length, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, in September 2023. Roan’s unbridled, lusty pop songs became an online phenomenon—or, as she might put it, a “femininomenon”—and she hit the arena circuit when she opened for Olivia Rodrigo on the latter’s GUTS tour in early 2024. - Apple Music

Glad this got a moment in the chart, it's probably my favourite of the Chappell hits from her album (but Good Luck, Babe! is superior to them all).
"Whatever She Wants" really makes me laugh, probably the funniest top 40 hit this year (unintentionally). "Lovers" is one of Calvin's weaker efforts while "Pink Pony Club" is a brilliant track, shame it missed

Biography

Charli xcx’s creative drive and willingness to take risks has made her one of the most enthralling pop artists of her era. Whether she’s penning defiantly joyous singles like “Boom Clap” or exploring her glitchier, chaotic side on “Vroom Vroom”, Charli’s success comes from her work both in and out of pop music’s formulaic lane. Born Charlotte Aitchison in 1992 in Cambridge to Scottish and Gujarati Indian parents, she took up songwriting at 14, lifting her stage name from her instant messenger handle. On the strength of her MySpace uploads and performances at London raves, she landed a record deal at 18, released the modestly successful darkwave cuts “Stay Away” and “Nuclear Seasons”, and then hit the big time with 2012’s kiss-off anthem “I Love It”. Originally scrapped from her own album for being too poppy, the beat-pounding re-recording by Swedish duo Icona Pop quickly became a worldwide dance-floor favourite. Her goth-tinged debut album, 2013’s True Romance, and tracks like the psychedelic, Gold Panda-sampling “You (Ha Ha Ha)” soon positioned Charli as the missing link between Grimes’ freak scene, Lorde’s dark melodies and Carly Rae Jepsen’s sweetness. But while that album and its follow-up, 2014’s synth-poppy Sucker, brought Charli a few steps closer to mainstream approval, she found more creative freedom among the esoteric, hyperpop wilds of 2016’s Vroom Vroom EP and 2017’s twin mixtapes, Number 1 Angel and Pop 2. While stardom eluded her, Charli built a track record as a prolific songwriter and collaborator, penning standard pop hits for Iggy Azalea (“Fancy”) and Selena Gomez (“Same Old Love”), and working with the likes of Lil Yachty, David Guetta and BTS. Yet Charli shines brightest when she’s illuminating, breaking down and even critiquing the industry that gives her acclaim. In 2020, a year after the release of her eclectic, star-studded third album, Charli, she released the intimate how i’m feeling now, an album written in six weeks during the pandemic with input from fans alongside extensive, real-time video diaries and notes. Two years later, she experimented with the act of selling out on her fourth album, CRASH, using her major record label’s A&R expertise to write the mainstream pop record she’d always been afraid to release. That album’s success, coupled with a prominent feature (“Speed Drive”) on 2023’s blockbuster Barbie soundtrack, brought Charli closer than ever to worldwide appeal. But her response was to turn back to the sounds that inspired her to make music in the first place. Her 2024 album, BRAT, is a homage to those riotous, sweaty London clubs of her youth, and an introspective—if not slightly ironic—look at her pop music journey, one riddled with head-empty euphoria (“Club classics”), dominating swagger (“Von dutch”) and sombre sentimentality (“I think about it all the time”). - Apple Music

I know the EOY chart is often about timing, and hits later in the year have more of an uphill battle to make it in, but I think this is one of the more surprising misses for me! Definitely feels like it should be in. Great song anyway
I think my favourite Chappell tracks are the ones that made the year end 100. 'Apple' is pretty good but there's better on the album (fingers crossed '360' has made it!)
what a moment it was seeing Charli have such a big year, of course we'll be seeing a bit more from her in the chart proper but this deserved too

Biography

Coldplay isn’t only one of the most popular English bands but also a torchbearer for an art-rock sound whose roots reach back through Radiohead, U2, Pink Floyd, and The Beatles. Yes, the music is anthemic enough to fill arenas—“Clocks,” “Speed of Sound,” “Paradise,” “A Sky Full of Stars”—but detailed and atmospheric, too, stretching the conventions of modern rock without ever losing the emotional thread. Formed in London in the late ’90s, the band debuted with 2000’s Parachutes. Seasons have changed—the arty experiments of 2008’s Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, the electro rush of 2011’s Mylo Xyloto, the eclecticism of 2019’s Everyday Life—but the core of its sound has been consistent: Propulsive, uplifting, grand but vulnerable. In step with the earnest spirit of its music, the band has also poured considerable resources into philanthropy: performing at Live 8, sponsoring Ocean Cleanup efforts, and notably investing in renewable energy to power 2021's Music of the Spheres World Tour. Whether in crowded bars, lonely bedrooms, closing out the London 2012 Summer Olympics, or headlining the Super Bowl 50 four years later, the effect is more or less the same: At the end of the day, Coldplay comes for the heart. - Apple Music

Huge thanks to Dan for sparing us feelslikeimfallingasleep x

I'm not wild on Coldplay generally but this is definitely a strong track for them, I appreciate it being a bit different to their usual stuff.

 Missed the top 100 this year

Biography

Flo Milli crafts flashy, irreverent bops—but that doesn’t mean she’s not serious about her lyrical style. Born Tamia Monique Carter in Mobile, AL, in 2000, the MC wrote her first song at 9 years old, after seeing rap icon Nicki Minaj on an episode of BET’s music video countdown show 106 & Park. Flo Milli, who names the free-spirited Young Thug as another influence, officially began rapping at age 11, creating an all-girl hip-hop crew called Real & Beautiful. After disbanding the group and working to build a devoted social media following, she released the carefree “Beef FloMix” in 2018, an informal remix of Atlanta rappers Ethereal and Playboi Carti’s off-kilter 2015 SoundCloud cut “Beef.” “Everybody will try to act like rapping is easy—it looks easy—but it’s a lot of obstacles that come with it,” Flo Milli told Apple Music. “So when ‘Beef’ started blowing up, I kind of got a little more confident about my music, and that’s when I knew I should just keep going.” In 2020, she dropped her debut mixtape, the brash Ho, why is you here ?, led by the buoyant single “In The Party,” an unapologetic flex about Flo Milli’s ability to swipe the arm candy from anyone standing in her way. With a bubblegum trap sound, a pop star attitude, and infectious energy, Flo Milli builds intentionally upon a foundation set in place by her stylistic predecessors. - Apple Music
