January 11Jan 11 How long will this be open for? I'll try and get around to doing this (and the end of year Electronic poll too).
February 1Feb 1 Author #10 Dimension x Alison Wonderland - Satellite 73vm55yDxPU Thanks to our 13 voters let's count down the top 10 dance tracks of the year. First up we have English DnB DJ Dimension who broke into the UK chart with two high profile collabs with Sub Focus. He teamed up with Australian DJ Alison Wonderland who is also the song's vocalist, becoming her first entry to the DTotW poll series. They had met in 2020 and the collab had been planned ever since with Dimension describing Alison's vocal as perfect for the track's 90s trance influence. lewistgreen was the song's biggest supporter ranking it 1st for the year.
February 1Feb 1 Author #09 Ben Hemsley x Chenai - Closer my2HZpXDq3w Next up we have Ben Hemsley, a Newcastle-based producer who has recently gone in a classic trance direction for his latest handful of releases. This was the first of two that won the weekly poll throughout the year. It guested former X Factor contestant Chenai on vocals and also had Theo Hutchcraft of Hurts as a songwriter. The song went on to be represented in the Buzzjack Song Contest placing in third. I was the song's biggest supporter as this was my favourite song of the year.
February 1Feb 1 Author #08 The Blessed Madonna feat. Clementine Douglas - Happier 6AbEFloifG4 One of the many singles released in anticipation of debut studio album 'Godspeed', this was the most commercial offering yet from The Blessed Madonna being rooted in classic deep house. It was one of the year's biggest UK dance hits peaking in the official top 20, also serving as the second hit for guest vocalist Clementine Douglas. In the poll it became the first of two winners for her, with a Kylie Minogue collaboration following later in the year. The song was most favoured by bluemonday, lewistgreen and J14C placing in their top three.
February 1Feb 1 Author #07 Justice - Incognito mBuHO8p0wS0 After taking a lengthy hiatus following 2016's album 'Woman' and the 2018 remix album, French electro-house duo Justice were firmly back which was very much appreciated particularly given the disbandment of fellow French duo Daft Punk. Whilst comeback single 'One Night/All Night' unfortunately lost out to Nero's 'Blame You' in a tiebreak round, their follow-up release 'Incognito' had much weaker competition to top the poll. With a fair bit of switch-ups in the song it is one of the less conventional in the top 10 but all the better for it. It was JulianT's favourite of the year and also ranked highly with Brer.
February 1Feb 1 Author #06 Ben Hemsley x Rose Gray - Tidal ICoKiFPNxmM We say another hello to Ben Hemsley now with his second release of the year proving to be slightly more popular than the first. 'Tidal' was another track very much inspired by late 90s trance, so much so that it caught the attention of legendary producer Ferry Corsten who gave it a remix in a similar style to what he was doing back in the day. The song was also assisted by a guest vocal from one of Buzzjack's current favourite dance vocalists Rose Gray who just put out her debut album albeit without the inclusion of this. As a solid follow up to 'Closer' I ranked this in my top three, however this was jimwatts' personal favourite of the year.
February 5Feb 5 Author #05 Peggy Gou - 1+1=11 qTSadqfWeDw Recommencing in the top five we have Peggy Gou who tied with Calvin Harris last year to be Buzzjack's favourite dance hit of 2023 with the infectious 'Nanana'. Her summer anthem for 2024 wasn't ever going to be a commercial hit being an instrumental effort however it was widely considered her best follow-up release since with its trance-influenced melody and production. The song also acted as the launch for her debut album release. The song was my 2nd favourite in the poll and the personal favourite for Kath.
February 5Feb 5 Author #04 Porter Robinson - Cheerleader CzJbz9qSsd0 Taking 4th place we have 'Cheerleader' which was the comeback release in 2024 for Porter Robinson, acting as the lead single for his third album release. The track and subsequent album saw a bit of sound recalibration being more influenced by emo and electropop, with its lyrics written about the relationship he has with his fans. Despite being less traditionally 'EDM' it expectedly had a very positive fan reception and most here would agree it was ultimately the best he had to offer on the whole album. ElectroBoy and seven. rated it their top pick of the year.
February 5Feb 5 Author #03 Chase & Status x Stormzy – BACKBONE Ye5QXjqTDqE What a great last couple of years it has been for Chase & Status. With 'Disconnect' and 'Baddadan' having been huge hits in 2023, hype for an eventual 2024 release was clearly there which we got in August with 'Backbone'. Assisted by Stormzy who proved to be a perfect fit for this sort of energetic heavy drum n' bass, it not only was a very clear DTotW winner but also entered at UK #1 being the much deserved first for the veteran duo. The song was awardinary's favourite of the selection.
February 5Feb 5 Author #02 Disclosure - She's Gone, Dance On QZrcXTHqQ_c Following their self-released album in 2023, 'She's Gone, Dance On' saw Disclosure's return to the majors and became their biggest hit in years (ignoring an afro house remix of 'You & Me'). Being a brilliant summer anthem with a retro sample it reminded us of the good old Disclosure albeit still sounding fresh as ever. The song was originally intended just as a bootleg for club play but the very positive fan reception prompted them to clear the sample for official release. It was Brer's personal favourite in the list and the second-favourite for bluemonday.
