As we Monsters know, Lady Gaga has many album tracks which we deem strong & that could have been hits if released as a single.

Which of the ones listed do you think would have made the biggest impact as a single & where in the album campaign would you have released it?

Choose one for each studio album.

  • I went for Starstruck, Monster, Scheiße, Gypsy, Diamond Heart and Replay Dance in the Dark is obviously great but my gut is that Monster would have been the bigger hit

Starstrukk

Monster/ Teeth double a seed for Halloween

ScheiBe

Gypsy as first single

Brooklyn Nights as first single from Pt.2, aka a release with a few extra tracks

Diamond Heart

ALICE!!!!

Zombieboy

BTw, Artpop and Chronatica all needed vastly different singles and release stratgies, though, to work.

Oh a great thread - I'll need to have a think! Some are super easy decisions some are much tougher.

Where did the 3 choices come from by the way - your thoughts on them or the fan-favouriteness of them? Either way - let me THINK gaga

These are the tracks which I feel that the fans & the general public view as some of the strongest tracks on each of the albums they live on.

Preach!!! Monster and Teeth for Halloween.

The Fame: definitely agree with Starstruck and I think had she debuted a bit earlier worldwide her label would have given it a single push to tide the waves for Bad Romance

The Fame Monster: Monster is a good choice 🤷‍♂️

Born This Way: I will forever mourn Scheiße not being a single 😭

ARTPOP: My heart says Aura… my brain says Gypsy… and yet I think she would get cancelled for these single choices 10 years down the line 😭😭😭

Joanne: Diamond Heart as lead released in June/July, maybe we should have made this go viral now that pop/country is kinda in

Chromatica: idk what the status with Sour Candy is but that should have gotten the full on single push after Rain On Me

(Bonus - Dawn Of Chromatica: Free Woman with Rina Sawayama)

Gypsy and Hair given the full single treatment would have smashed, with the former likely also picking up controversy airtime.

Two singles for Joanne was probably enough.

I'm still salty that Always Remember Us This Way wasn't the lead single over Shallow, much better song in my book.

I think The Fame was more or less right, I can't see where another single would have fitted in.

'Monster' and 'Dance in the Dark' definitely deserved to be singles, but again the run was pretty much flawless and I'm not sure another single would've really been needed at the time (plus with the timeline of BTW following so closely it wouldn't have fit)

'Schieße' could have been really great! Maybe 'Hair' too. I think the main problem with this era was perhaps the ordering of the singles rather than the choices themselves by large.

Artpop's whole era was WRONG. I'd have gone... 'Sexxx Dreams' as the lead with spruced up verses, 'Do What U Want' second with somebody else (like Miguel, or even just the Xtina version), 'I Wanna Be With You' around Christmas/new year and then 'Gypsy' to finish off the era around spring. I guarantee that would have been more successful/better received.

'Diamond Heart' would've been a good single but I don't care that much.

'Alice' really deserved a full single + video treatment, it's a shame that era was essentially cut dead on album release as it had so much more potential.

I agree with Aly with ‘The Fame’. The album was starting to lose steam around ‘Love Game’ and I think releasing another single would essentially be dragging an album out for the sake of it (and I don’t think Starstrukk would’ve smashed either). Releasing ‘Bad Romance’ quite soon after maintained Gaga’s momentum as the untouchable pop force in that era.

For ‘The Fame Monster’, it’s no secret that fans (including me) wanted ‘Dance In The Dark’ as a single as it’s also my album favourite bar the singles, but sitting back reflecting I think that would’ve flopped. ‘Monster’ would’ve probably been my pick as the only song in this era that deserved a single push but I can see why it was ultimately scrapped.

For the ‘Born This Way’ era, I think the single choices were actually correct, but I’d switch ‘The Edge of Glory’ and ‘Judas’. As much as everyone seems to harp on about ‘Marry The Night’ being a favourite, again I don’t think it would’ve smashed any harder. It’s very much another case of ‘Dance In The Dark’ category. If we were to really push another song it would’ve been ‘Scheisse’ for me.

‘ARTPOP’ is hard, and ‘Sexxx Dreams’ is another example of this era’s ’Dance In The Dark/Marry The Night’. It’s one of my favourite tracks on the album, but again I don’t think it would’ve done much given the nature of the song. I’m a firm believer that ‘Applause’ was the right lead single choice, and I will fight until I die that stance. For me, it’s by far the most superior song on the album in a rather chaotic atmosphere, but I would’ve quickly released ‘Do What U Want’ as single #2 followed by ‘Gypsy’ to conclude (again to showcase sound diversity within the single release strategy).

‘Joanne’ should just be dumped in general, sorry not sorry at all, or be grouped with ‘A Star is Born’ and be a side project much like ‘Harlequin’.

For the ‘Chromatica’ era, again like Aly said above it was a wasted era. Upon album release it’s quite clear Gaga gave up on it. For me ‘Alice’ is this era’s ’Dance In The Dark/Marry The Night/Sexxx Dreams’, I’m not convinced it’ll do anything but mid-tier in the charts and that’s based on name carrying alone. ‘Sour Candy’ should’ve been released after ‘Rain On Me’ (but I get why it wasn’t given a duet was single #2 and another one for single #3 might’ve caused some backlash), as it had the most promising streaming prominence amongst all album tracks.

For ‘Mayhem’ well she’s cracked the code SO FAR. Fingers crossed it’s a 4/4 for the next single..

Would anyone change any of the singles to perhaps any of the ones listed above? For me, the eras would look like this:

Just Dance

Pokerface

Paparazzi

LoveGame

Bad Romance

Telephone

Alejandro

Monster (Perfect Halloween single, strong way to end the perfect era)

Born This Way

The Edge Of Glory

Schiebe (Just screaming smash hit)

Bloody Mary (Perfect Halloween single, a staple along side Monster)

Marry The Night (Great way to end the era, big performance at the Grammys 2012)

Applause

Sexxx Dreams (Updated verses, also a clean version for radio)

Gypsy (Instant smash hit, shows versatility)

Do What U Want ft Christina Aguilera

Diamond Heart (Strong start to the era, one of the best on the album)

Million Reasons

Angel Down (Great lyrics, touching)

Dancin’ In Circles (Very funky track, nice way to round off the era)

The Cure

Shallow

Always Remember Us This Way

Hair, Body, Face (One of the most “pop” sounding tracks on soundtrack, would have been a top 40 hit)

Alice

Rain On Me

Sour Candy (Was very prominent on streaming)

Replay (Very nostalgic GaGa in sound, could see it fitting on The Fame Monster)

Free Woman (Music video - GaGa finally breaking free from the world of Chromatica)

If she had a solid team behind her, she’d be pretty much an unstoppable force in the charts.

I’ve went off what I think would’ve performed the best commercially here!

So I’ve went for -

Starstruck

Monster

Scheibe

Gypsy

Dancin in Circles (this is a an odd one because it doesn’t fit the album theme at all but I’ve always been convinced this could’ve slapped with a hoedown esque video)

Replay (dare I say should’ve been the lead!) tbf Stupid Love isn’t a major favourite of mine and I think so many tracks showcase the album better!

Totally agree with Cody and Haus that Free Woman with Rina deserved a release, it is infinitely better than the original imo and would have been one of my favourite singles of hers

see in a perfect world (that being a world without COVID) the Chromatica/Dawn Of eras would have gotten the same treatment as The Fame/Monster eras

Diamond Heart

Perfect Illusion

Million Reasons

*extended/deluxe gets released*

The Cure

Dancing In Circles

Joanne (Where Do You Think You’re Going?) (Country/Hot AC/AC only)

Chromatica

Stupid Love

Rain On Me

Sour Candy

911 (with THAT video)

Dawn Of Chromatica release
