Quick recovery for the legacy act 😆 Nothing anymore should be written off on day one or two, or even week one or two. There is a new status quo going on in terms of how long it takes people to adapt

Just wanna say that while the urge to be a prophet of doom is at an all time high, often times things aren't as good or bad as they seem. Just go to the end of the June 2021 streaming thread and see a

July last year, Ed Sheeran had 66 million listeners on Spotify (19th), according to a tweet from then I saw.

Prior to the release of this single, he was up to 76 million (14th). These things ebb and flow. Could easily go past his highest non-"Merry Christmas" boosted peak with this one. The reality doesn't always follow the vibes or the narrative, but that's why we have the charts.

I agree, I mean not every era is going to have 3 too 3 singles on album drop or ‘Bad Habits’ 10 weeks at no1 vibes. Is his biggest era over, probably yes, is he done, doubtful. Same with Drake, same with Taylor, same with multiple other artists.

The problem for Ed is that he has huge promo. BBC articles, ITV news segments. Ads on TikTok, open top bus through London and it’s a pretty catchy decent song and had the best playlisting possible and still had pretty underwhelming numbers so all that combined kind of points in the direction he’s either more an album artist now or people just don’t need any more Ed Sheeran and we’ve got the best out of him already. Some will say it’s jumping the gun and too soon but this guy was dominating billboard and now can’t break top 200 on Apple Music in the US, this guy caused the OCC to change the chart because he had so many songs charting and now 300k? Yeah it’s a different era

I hear what you’re saying but you can’t expect an artist to remain that popular. Ariana for example was debuting with 1M + debuts and look at her last album / even the recent deluxe tracks a few years ago Twilight Zone would have been an easy number 1 I’m sure of it.

Olivia Rodrigo is the same her debut album was HUGE and her second was nowhere near on the same level despite it doing extremely well…

Justin Bieber and Drake are other examples of having huge success literally releasing anything and it had big streaming numbers…Now those numbers are a distant memory.

Streaming / the charts have just changed now it’s rare for songs to come out the gates with insanely huge numbers they all seem to climb if they’re going to be hits Die with a Smile entered in the 20’s on Spotify in the UK..

While DWAS has been big in the long run in the UK, it's not really a good example of a huge single these days in the UK. It has never got more than 460k streams on Spotify daily and never really challeged #1 on singles chart.

Though it is one of the biggest hits of the past year, which is the point being made - it's not about the peak streams or the debut necessarily, but Die With a Smile has been a huge hit through its longevity.

I mean it is BIG, but it's not Stick Season/Espresso/Beautiful Things level big and never really exploded in the UK.

This doesn't change what's being said though - it's still a very big hit and an example of longevity having impact over peak streams or a high debut...! On its way to double platinum and it's still bobbing in and out of the UK Spotify top 10 after 8 months, despite discourse after the first Spotify update already calling it an underperformance. It's a great example of how a song can become a slow burner and earn its way to being a huge hit. It doesn't have to be huge on the level of Stick Season to still be a great example of a massive hit single.

that is a bit of a yikes moment for Ed, certainly didn’t expect sleep token would still be ahead on day 2

I’m sure the song will end up sticking around a while anyway but it seems very doubtful that it’ll be a big hit

thats terrible for the newbies especially Miley

thats insane that Miley's old song Party in the US is the biggest climber on today's Spotify at #137

but the brand new single is out of the top 200

He’s down 53 from a very bad debut WW, he’s 80. (145 in the US)

And that’s being pushed with playlists and promo, not even clearing 200k on its second day.

Yeah, that’s not good. Not good for Miley also sadly.

Great for Sleep Token (what a SONG!) It’s not even a single.

Hopefully Ed will stabilise over the week, it's obviously not good and he'll likely be in panic mode but seems worse for Miley for me, coming off the biggest hit of the whole year with the lead single from her last album only two years ago.

The majority of new singles really just struggle to stick around these days it seems after day one (although some do rebound). People seem to be getting stuck in the quagmire of their old favourites even more than ever and won't easily let anything new in.

Jason Derulo continuing to defy the streaming era? lol

Seems suspect to me - there's been no rise in the song's last.fm stats + its not even in her top 10 most popular currently on Spotify.

I see, shall have to keep an eye on it tomorrow!

Was about to say, it was released in January and has made no impact here previously. It fell out of our Asian chart in February and hasn't returned since so there may be some Jimin-inspired shenanigans....
