Posted April 17Apr 17 surprised nobody's talking about this but this movie has sparked a couple of tiktok trends, most notably the wild celebration right after the arrival of chicken jockey, including screaming, confetti, throwing of popcorn, and even lifting up an alive chicken. 😠many are debating whether this behaviour is acceptable. has anyone watched the movie and encountered similarly rowdy scenes and what's your comment on the scenes that have been circulating online?
April 17Apr 17 My 15 year old son went to watch it. Don't think he was very impressed.Everyone shouted Chicken Jockey, but there was no food throwing thankfully.I see the trends on TikTok and it seems so unnecessary. Like, what about the people who don't want to be involved, who get hit by flying drinks, who have the movie stopped because of it And those who have to clean up afterwards.I may sounds very old here.
April 17Apr 17 My friends who saw it day 1 had a lot of shouting and clapping but nothing as crazy as the stuff on TikTok, they said it was a lot of fun. I saw it a week later and the cinema was dead so no disruptions. The messes these people are making are shocking. If it was just the cheering at the meme parts it would be fine by me (if the majority of the cinema is also in on it) but the popcorn throwing/riding on each other's backs is not on at all. April 17Apr 17 It's a difficult one - it's harmless in theory and getting younger people to the cinemas is much harder these days with streaming available and prices so high, this is clearly getting them there in droves and providing a unique, communal experience (Jack Black himself even showed up to one of the screenings!), and honestly, I think if you're going to the Minecraft movie to be quiet and focus on the plot and characters, I think you've got the wrong idea xIt's definitely not good if others are being purposefully disrupted or harassed and having food thrown at them though, as well as the staff that are definitely not paid enough to deal with that. I did read about an option of two different types of meme-friendly screenings to separate those that don't want to take part, a bit similar to the Wicked sing-along screenings which does seem like something that could work, although I feel it will just eventually cool down after the Easter Holidays and the kids will move on to the next TikTok meme.Or why don't we all forget about mediocre video game adaptations and go in droves to watch great original films like Sinners, that'd be cool too xx
April 18Apr 18 Cheering and clapping in excitement at what is presented on screen is one thing (think 'Endgame' - Cap lifting Mjolnir/every returning through the portals etc..), but to purposefully throw popcorn, sweets, drinks etc... in the air just to be obnoxious and annoying is another and it is really not fair on the staff who have to clean it up and deal with the angry guests who didn't want to take part in/weren't even aware of the "trends" who just wanted to take their kids to keep them distracted for the Easter holidays.Thankfully nothing quite that extreme has happened at our cinema. Although we have had guests arguing with each other after telling groups to "shut up" etc..
April 18Apr 18 I went opening night and had a crowd who loudly applauded every few minutes at references I didn’t understand because I’ve never played the game. I’ve probably been to the cinema about a thousand times in my life and never ever experienced anything quite like it. They clapped along every time Steve would sing as if we were at a pantomime. Lava chicken, chicken jockey, and the Momoa/Black 69 shot got whoops, hollers, and a standing ovation. It was a bit annoying at first but by the end I just accepted that I was way out the loop and we even clapped along when Steve sings goodbye to his dog. It was nuts! It felt like being at a concert. I thought it was quite fun by the end, haha. I don’t think I’d have enjoyed the film nearly as much if the crowd wasn’t so into it. I wouldn’t want this to be a regular thing though and I’d appreciate if there were different fan screenings where you could act like this, but it’s hard to police and I just end up feeling bad for the cinema staff.
April 18Apr 18 Also, I genuinely had no idea going opening night that it was about to be this crazy hit with endless TikTok trends like Minions 2. I was dragging my feet booking the tickets because I hadn’t finalised plans and thought it’d be the next big flop like ‘Borderlands’. I had no inkling I’d just be able to grab the last few seats in the house when booking 48 hours before and then that I was about to experience this insane energy. It feels impossible to predict what will hit with the general public and what won’t recently box office wise.
