This is something I have been thinking about for many years. Which songs have been UK number one hit during Bank Holiday Mondays (excluding Christmas time)

Some random facts: Wham! - Last Christmas has already been at #1 on the most Bank Holidays, starting with 1 Jan 2021 - I make it eight so far. Several songs have been #1 on four Bank Holidays within

  • Unfortunately not I Don't Like Mondays.

  • I was just gonna say I don't think anyone cares about Bank Holiday number ones but those facts make a very compelling read @jimwatts!

I'm not sure anyone would have ever thought to make a list of songs that were #1 on Bank Holidays.

There are so many of them and it doesn't hold much accolade.

I might be wrong though.

Of course, back in the 80s, for example, shops were shut on BH's and sales the week after were usually lower as a result (not that that would have made a difference to the BH No 1)

Some random facts:

Wham! - Last Christmas has already been at #1 on the most Bank Holidays, starting with 1 Jan 2021 - I make it eight so far.

Several songs have been #1 on four Bank Holidays within the same year i.e. Good Friday, Easter Monday, May Day and Spring - most recently Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding - Miracle in 2023, although it was replaced for a week between the earlier and later two, and Harry Styles - As It Was in 2022, which stayed at #1 between each.

Wet Wet Wet - Love Is All Around was at #1 for the rare double of the Spring (30 May 1994) and August (29 Aug 1994) Bank Holidays with all weeks in between as well. Frankie Laine - I Believe was #1 on the equivalent two Bank Holidays in 1953, but missed two weeks in between. (There wasn't a May Day Holiday in 1953, but it would have also been #1 then if there had.)

Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You may well be the longest running #1 (14 weeks) not to have been there on any Bank Holiday - it was replaced by Harry Styles on Good Friday 2017 so also missed Easter Monday, then returned for another week before Clean Bandit replaced it in the week of the May Day Holiday.

Just realised that due to the extra Bank Holiday for the Queen's Jubilee in 2022, 'As It Was' was actually #1 on five Bank Holidays within the same year and run at the top: 15 Apr, 18 Apr, 2 May, 2 Jun and 3 Jun - that will be tough for anyone to beat!

See, I said I might be wrong about someone keeping track of BH No 1s!!

Did u incorporate the Queens funeral which was essentially a bank holiday (I know LC got it afterwards can't remember who got it the actual day)

2023 had kings coronation bank Holiday too

Lewis Capaldi - Forget Me was #1 on the Queen's funeral Bank Holiday (19 Sep 2022).

And I completely overlooked the King's Coronation Bank Holiday on 8 May 2023 - 'Miracle' was #1 for that too, so also five within a year! Albeit its time at #1 was interrupted between the second and third of those.

Thought I'd ask since you was doing them all 😅🤣
