It's always been quite clear to me. "GRAT" simply means that the song, on iTunes/Apple, is only available through the album pre-order and not through a separate single release. It's good to know as so

@ManicKangaroo The issue I have with you labelling some releases as "GRAT" is that they end up on the Radio 1 playlist, have an official music video and/or go on to "become" an official single push, so surely the age of instant grats is irrelevant by this point no?

The only reason that songs are marked as GRAT is because they are not available as a "Single" version and if you pre-order the album you will receive that track for free thus reducing its potential "sales" as these do not count. Obviously this meant more when downloading was the dominant factor.

Im.not sure what the issue is and why removing the GRAT tag would change anything

To me, and I guess only me, it screams "not an official single" whereas it in fact is a single, and it may go on to get its own "Single" release with artwork later on as part of an edit/remix. I guess whenever I see the word "GRAT" next to a new release in your list it somehow devalues it or makes it seem like it's a less significant release compared with the others?

Admittedly I never stopped to consider how these tracks downloads do not count as pure sales, not that it makes much difference to chart performance anyway in 2025.

Given the nature of the charts these days, whether it's a GRAT or a single or a promo single they're all able to chart anyway so it doesn't make any difference in the long term.

OK so I get that but I'm curious as to what the benefit is in including it in your release schedule? Not saying it shouldn't be there but I'm just wondering what it adds for our purposes?

Even though you understand some album tracks get sent to radio and so are upgraded from a promotional single to an official single.

Is that not what happened earlier in the year with IT Girl by JADE?

The only reason for marking it as GRAT is to show it's from an album Pre-order, it makes no difference whether it's being sent to radio or not (how would I even know that information?)

Right ok, but you did say previously that the reason you mark is as a GRAT was to differentiate between an album track and a single, so the point I'm simply making here is that not all album tracks are in fact "album tracks" so labelling them as a GRAT by default is not strictly accurate as they can be changed at any point to become an official single which happens quite often these days if something takes off and goes viral. Not only that, some album tracks have official music videos accompanying them which would suggest more than just an album track (potentially).
