Robbie Williams' first time in Colombia: the king of 'Britpop' conquered Bogotá with his hits 'Angels', 'Rock DJ' and a curious mockery of Oasis

The atmosphere outside the Movistar Arena in Bogotá predicted that it would not be just another concert on the international agenda. Among the crowd there was a markedly millennial and 'thirties' pulse, a generation that grew up with the MTV of the two thousand and that arrived wearing red sweatshirts, a direct nod to the emblematic wardrobe of the British singer, flags of the United Kingdom and even some monkey masks, in explicit reference to 'Better Man', the biopic inspired by the life of the artist.

At 7:50 p.m., the British The Lottery Winners came out to warm up the night. The indie pop group delivered a repertoire full of contagious passion that shook an audience that barely discovered them. Songs like 'Much Better' connected in such a way with the stands that their vocalist came to shout excitedly: "We are very famous!", before finishing off by saying that Latin America had the best audience and leaving a message to the owner of the night: "You're going to love this, Williams".

After the departure of the opening acts, the expectation took over the arena. The interval felt long, crossed by the collective anxiety of seeing, for the first time in Colombia, the British showman par excellence.

The wait ended abruptly. Robbie Williams burst onto the stage wearing his classic red sweatshirt and attacking from the start with 'Let Me Entertain You'. The impact was immediate: as soon as he began to sing, he took off his jacket and threw it on stage with the self-confidence that characterizes him, and then put it back on laughing. The stage presence of the Briton flooded the place. Moving with ease and a marked play of the pelvis, he pointed to the stands, laughed and returned the looks. The show combined its characteristic irreverence with moments of pure theatricality and musical power. The team of choristers offered an impeccable vocal and choreographic display, backed by a soundtrack that sounded clear and strong throughout the evening.

During the cover of 'New York, New York', the aesthetic proposal took a dazzling turn by evoking the atmosphere of the fifties, with a wardrobe that paid homage to the aesthetics of Marilyn Monroe in her pink dress from 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes', released in 1953.

In another passage of the night, Robbie took time to reflect on his biopic 'Better Man'. He mentioned that the film concludes dramatically at his massive and historic Knebworth concert in 2003, but clarified that, although the film ends at that professional milestone, his real life began when he met his wife, Ayda Field. In addition, he brought out his characteristic humor by boasting with laughter that he has four children and that they are all from the same wife.

For the final closing, Robbie Williams returned to the stage wearing the yellow jersey of the Colombian National Team, decorated with his characteristic geometric patterns on the sides. The crowd erupted. With the tricolor shield on his chest, he started with the first chords of 'Angels'.

At the end of the song, Williams kissed the crest of the jersey and addressed the attendees to thank them, assuring that they were a wonderful audience. He bowed with his entire band and, after the formal farewell, re-entered the stage alone.

He walked slowly from one end to the other, staring at the crowd with teary eyes and threatening not to want to retreat. With a mixture of awe and contained gratitude, he took the last minutes to contemplate the Movistar Arena between uninterrupted applause before turning around and leaving the stage definitively on his long-awaited debut night in the country.

A night after Jamiroquai returned to Bogota, electrifying an ecstatic MedPlus Coliseum, there was a remarkable first time at Bogota's Movistar Arena and it was felt intensely and with a lot of heart.

Robbie Williams (RW), ambassador of Britpop, who took flight in the boy band Take That, but who went global and has forged his own name since the late nineties with a waterfall of memorable songs, visited Colombia, at last, and what an impression it left on him! In several parts of the concert, the singer told the audience that packed the capital's stage that he loved his audiences all over the world, in Europe, but that the effusiveness that he and his band received and felt in their bones was unique, very special.

Concerts will come for him in Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico, and he may find other more effusive reactions. But it matters little. Colombia can be proud of having left everything and set a very high bar. Robbie pressured his manager to make that return happen sooner rather than later.

Over the course of two hours, RW dazzled the Movistar Arena in Bogotá by delivering a great and extensive songbook that strung together many of his hits, such as 'Rock DJ', 'Supreme', 'Millenium', 'Kids', 'Feel' and 'Angels', and also anthems by other artists, including 'Wonderwall', by Oasis; 'New York, New York', by Frank Sinatra, and 'My Way', by Paul Anka (which Sinatra made eternal). It all started with 'Let Me Entertain You', and from that point on the contract between the people and the artists was sealed. Pure entertainment, with high joy, with explosion and a lot of feeling.

In the delivery of their music and their show, RW, two of their musicians (the lead guitarist and the bassist), their great backing vocalists and their incredible dancers took advantage of the platform that emanated from the stage and brought them closer to the center of the stalls. From that same platform, Robbie took the opportunity to go down the stairs on several occasions and hug and listen to his audience (more on this, go ahead). Robbie, closer to you!

In addition, in the peculiar (and welcome) presentation of the band members (in which everyone has fun and breaks it, but the drummer has more fun than everyone), each one played a short but exciting one apart from a cover of their choice. And there they played 'Paranoid', by Black Sabbath; 'Another One Bites the Dust', by Queen, and other well-known songs such as 'Samba de Janeiro', 'I Want You Back', 'Y.M.C.A.', closing with 'Just Can't Get Enough', by Depeche Mode, and 'Hey Jude', by The Beatles, chosen by one of their guitarists, the oldest of the group. And it proved once again that collectively singing the "Naaa naa na nanananaaaa, Hey Jude!" is therapeutic, to say the least.

The sound carpet he offered was rich and fantastic. Even if her voice, perfect for her songs, is not always perfect for others she sings, she does not restrict herself; she releases them because they mean a lot to her and she makes them count from that love. Robbie is free. You can feel it. That's why he also ate a banana in the middle of the show. Who wants cramps?

From the beginning, the artist declared this experience as his "love letter to entertainment", and defined the term as the act of "making people feel something". And that is what he achieved with his bombardment of the senses and empathy itself. And it was special to see in his expressions and in those of his band and dancers that they felt the electricity in the air. Not only did they emanate it, they received it as well. Everyone present felt something powerful, and that makes a difference.

Robbie was all warm frankness. He asked who had seen his film Better Man (on Prime Video, it narrates his path in music and in life, much more heartfelt than it seems). With his British sense of humor and his showmanship, he elevated it, put it on the map, but he said that it only covered a part of his life, and perhaps the most important one was missing...

Because a lot has happened since 2003, when she gave a legendary concert at Knebworth and cemented her status as a cultural icon (that fact marks the end of her film). That is why he opened up by sharing that, until he met his wife and had his four adored children with her, he felt empty. Now he is another man. He knows what he is playing and who he is. And you feel like you're not acting here. "Colombia, can I be your son?" he asked. Of course. This concert was also that, a love letter to his children and his wife, and to himself, now embracing his different stages.

They don't want to be cool: be human

For RW, who has always had an aura of an evil boy but a good heart (and that makes him cool in his own special way), it was interesting to hear him talk to the audience about the importance of getting rid of the pressure of aspiring to look or be cool.

In that order of ideas, in the midst of a very produced audience, it was a beautiful moment that Williams dedicated to Sofia, the president of his fan club in Colombia, who gave him a flag with dozens of signatures of people like her, who found in Robbie's music a source of genuine strength to face an aggressive environment. that as a child he saw her bullied. It wasn't cool, but it was real and tremendously moving.

Not only did he sing 'She's The One', Robbie also gave the microphone to Sofia to express what she felt, the gratitude, the importance, the joy of her music. The moment served to underline that, in substance and form, it matters five to be cool, but it does make a lot of difference to surrender to empathy. RW also added to the moment charging with energy Lina, another follower who is fighting cancer and who, very excited, received the song that the musicians dedicated to her. Personally, that was the most exciting moment of the night (although listening to 'Supreme' was something I looked forward to and it was great).

For all this, it matters little that one of his posters said Columbia; Williams and his very talented companions will always be loved for the genuine heart they imprinted throughout that tremendous first show in the country. And also, towards the end of his presentation, he put on the number 10 of the Colombian national team, and here, affectionately, we named him the honorary 10 of the Columbia national team.

Ultimately, this experience is summed up in a verse that sounded powerful and beautiful last night, which is the title, song and motto of life: "I Love My Life". Robbie loves his life, you can tell. Fortunately, this fact is extremely contagious.

The British singer made his debut in Lima in the first of two performances and turned his long-awaited meeting with the Peruvian public into a celebration of his life, his songs and entertainment.

After 9:20 p.m., the lights of Arena Park 1 went out and the initials "R" and "W" occupied the giant screens that decorated the stage. A few seconds later, Robbie Williams appeared in a red sequined jacket and started with Let Me Entertain You. The debt that the Briton had with Peru had just begun to be settled.

The British artist — the iconic "bad boy" of Britpop and the voice behind the greatest hits that dominated the radios in the early 2000s — set foot on Lima soil for the first time as part of his world tour. And he didn't hold anything back: from the first minute he made it clear that he had arrived to deliver a show tailored to an artist who made his own life part of his repertoire.

He was made to wait a few minutes longer than announced; twenty, to be exact. But the wait was worth every second. With an entrance as dramatic and extravagant as only he knows how to sign, Williams appeared overflowing with irreverence and energy. "Let me introduce myself, my name is Robbie damn Williams," he said to an audience that had been waiting to see him for years.

A love letter to entertainment

Then he slowed down a little with Let Love Be Your Energy, as a preamble that the evening would also have room for calm. "Why didn't I come earlier? Do you know me?" he joked with the audience before making a direct promise: "Tonight will be my love letter to entertainment."

Between laughter and complicity, she also let slip a confession: "Sometimes I wonder if I still have it, if my best days are over." The seriousness, however, did not last long. "It's not for glory, not for money; It's because I have four children and I have to leave the house," he concluded.

The atmosphere was lit up again with Rock DJ, one of the most recognizable songs of his career. To play him, the Briton wore a bulky red coat and dark glasses, while images of Better Man, the musical film in which his story is represented through an ape, appeared on the screens.

A rush of energy

Already warmed up and in absolute confidence with the public, Robbie Williams took the opportunity to clarify with a laugh the reason for his delay: "I want you to know that I was not late. There were many people who did not arrive because there was traffic and I wanted to wait for them."

The night also opened a space to talk about Better Man, the feature film that turned the singer's life into a musical story. The film went more unnoticed in the United States, but found a particularly favorable reception in Peru, something that Robbie himself did not let go.

"Have you seen my film? Should it have won an Oscar?" he asked the audience.

Then he changed his tone and talked about what the film meant to him: "It was just part of my life. My life began when I met my wife. Guys, me, the Robbie Williams of the 90s, with four children and with the same wife. Before he had a family he was lost; He was successful, but he was lost. Together they improvised a dynamic acoustic segment that went through Angels, Millennium, Candy and Wonderwall. About this latest Oasis classic, Williams recalled an old anecdote with a laugh: "Two years after they broke up, I called Noel Gallagher and said, 'If you want a singer, I'm the man.' He laughed and hung up the phone."

The complicity with the public reappeared when the singer thanked the reception of Better Man: "My film was number one in Peru, thank you very much."

She then sang the film's theme song and briefly disappeared to change costumes.

When he returned, the scenario seemed different.

A black tank top and bright pink pants accompanied his transformation of the venue into a cabaret. The sequence summarized in a few minutes one of Williams' great virtues as an artist: his ability to move between genres, eras and references of popular culture without losing control of the stage.
