Posted June 15Jun 15 Thanks to all who have participated and voted in this tenth edition of The Best Song Contest In The World... Ever! - all votes have now been counted and verified and we have a winner which will be revealed tonight! (Let's just hope to avoid any further Mr. Blobby related shenanigans...)I've written up a little blurb about each artist/entry for anyone who cares to read such things, to be posted as each entry is unveiled. I'll be posting the votes in the order they were received so any rollercoaster movement across the scoreboards is entirely natural and not scripted. Will get started at 8:30 and will aim to post a vote every 5 minutes or so alongside a running scoreboard, should all be wrapped up in about 2 hours. xHere's a reminder of the songs in contention - but who will be crowned king(s)/queen(s)/monarch(s) of the one hit wonders?1 0 2wo Third3 - Hear Me Calling [???]2 0 Alphaville - Sounds Like A Melody [???]3 0 Annerley - Save Me [???]4 0 Army Of Lovers - Obsession [???]5 0 Chantay Savage - Betcha'll Never Find [???]6 0 Cicero - That Loving Feeling [???]7 0 Classix Nouveaux - Never Never Comes [???]8 0 Donna Lewis - Agenais [???]9 0 Freiheit - The Land Of Fantasy [???]10 0 Helen Reddy - Imagination [???]11 0 The Icicle Works - Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream) [???]12 0 Modern Talking - Atlantis Is Calling (S.O.S. June 15Jun 15 Author Vote 1WoW73 is the first to be unveiled, bringing us Australian singer and actress Helen Reddy with her 1983 track 'Imagination', she was much more successful across the pond with 3 US Hot 100 #1s to her name but only hit it big in the UK with 1975 #5 hit 'Angie Baby'. Reddy is much more well-known for her more easy listening 70s releases and based on what I've heard from her I definitely wouldn't have guessed this was her - her transition into the more synth-heavy 80s sound alas didn't seem to pan out commercially as this song didn't chart anywhere. On 03/06/2025 at 22:02, WoW73 said:I can't believe it, you voted for little ole me in PJSC!!!!Anyway, here's a ballot:12 Donna Lewis10 Army of lovers8 Paula Cole7 Nu Shooz6 Alphaville5 Modern Talking4 Chantay Savage3 Tracy Chapman2 Munchener Freiheit1 Icicle works1 12 Donna Lewis - Agenais [???]2 10 Army Of Lovers - Obsession [???]3 8 Paula Cole - I Don't Want To Wait [???]4 7 Nu Shooz - Point Of No Return [???]5 6 Alphaville - Sounds Like A Melody [???]6 5 Modern Talking - Atlantis Is Calling (S.O.S. June 15Jun 15 Well that was a really good one @WoW73 <3 I actually expect that to do really well!!! Edited June 15Jun 15 by Addy!
June 15Jun 15 Oh, off to a great start with the reveal as I liked that Helen Reddy song a lot!The instrumental reminded me a bit of 'Magic Fly' by Space which is high praise.
June 15Jun 15 Author Vote 2King Rollo is behind German pop/rock band Münchener Freiheit - known as simply Freiheit for their English language releases - with 'The Land Of Fantasy', another track from the same 1988 album that housed their one and only UK chart appearance, #14 hit and pseudo Christmas classic 'Keeping The Dream Alive'. It's opened within the top 10 having picked up a couple of points from the first votes. On 06/06/2025 at 23:50, King Rollo said:Thanks to Brer for hosting this contest and coming up with such a good theme. The Icicle Works rise to 3rd having got points from both of the first two voters with Army Of Lovers and Paula Cole shifting down to 4th and 5th.(aside: just realising the first 2 votes are the last 2 songs in the running order - entirely coincidental!)
June 15Jun 15 Author Vote 3Mangø fulfilled the prophecy of every song contest ever having a Pet Shop Boys entry despite their obvious lack of eligibility for this one - American born Scottish singer Cicero was a protégé of the duo, having signed to their label Spaghetti Records and receiving a helping hand on production from them on both his one UK top 40 hit 'Love Is Everywhere' (#19 in 1992) and this song, its follow-up 'That Loving Feeling' which peaked at #46 in the same year. He currently sits just inside the top 10.On 07/06/2025 at 23:33, Mangø said:And here are my votes.I know my top two songs extremely well, but the rest were (mostly very good) discoveries!12 White Town - Undressed (this was on my backup list to enter and in fact it was the first song I thought of when I saw this contest. I've got it on CD single up in the attic!)10 Army Of Lovers - Obsession (I've always loved the small handful of songs I know by them - I first tried to enter 'Israelism', I was gutted they had already been taken!)08 Annerley - Save Me (great discovery, love the production in particular)07 Modern Talking - Atlantis Is Calling (S.O.S. White Town gets a first 12 and flies up to 3rd, with Nu Shooz and Modern Talking also rising into the top 5.(and that's the first 3 votes being the last 3 songs in the running order the pattern does break on the next vote, how freaky though xx)
June 15Jun 15 Love seeing Donna in the lead. Doubt it will last but would love to see one of the female led songs in the top 5
June 15Jun 15 Author Vote 4Scene is up next with the oldest (I think) song in the contest, Dutch rock / 'Nederbeat' band Shocking Blue's 'Love Buzz' from 1969. It's from the same era as their one UK top 40 hit 'Venus' (#8 in 1970) although 'Venus' was omitted from the album in its original Dutch edition and only included in international releases. Although it wasn't a single, 'Love Buzz' much like 'Venus' would go on to have a notable cover version, as Nirvana's version served as their debut single in 1988 - Nirvana and Bananarama, what a range x Sadly 'Love Buzz' is currently sitting as one of the last 4 songs on 0 points. On 08/06/2025 at 13:14, Scene said:12 News at Ten10 Love My Way8 Point of No Return7 Sounds Like a Melody6 Atlantis is Calling5 Imagination4 The Land of fantasy3 Know How2 That Loving Feeling1 Never Never1 22 The Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way [???]2 21 Nu Shooz - Point Of No Return [???]3 20 Donna Lewis - Agenais [???]4 20 Army Of Lovers - Obsession [???]5 19 The Vapors - News At Ten [???]6 19 White Town - Undressed [???]7 18 Modern Talking - Atlantis Is Calling (S.O.S. Donna Lewis and Army Of Lovers drop to 3rd and 4th and the top 5 is now rounded out by The Vapors after they pick up their first 12.
June 15Jun 15 Now that the Grand Prix is over, I'm onboard for these results. No idea how this is gonna go
June 15Jun 15 As mentioned in the voting thread, I am familiar with the Nirvana song 'Love Buzz' (love the Bleach album) but had no idea it was a cover! So that was a fun discovery. I liked the original version even if it'll be a weird adjustment now, much like the original 'Venus' by them was, but that became my favourite iteration in time.
June 15Jun 15 Author Vote 5We now reveal the song that is currently topping the leaderboard in this early stage - Severin sent one of the original British post-punk bands The Psychedelic Furs with their 1982 single 'Love My Way'. It peaked at #42 in the UK and was at the time their highest charting song, outdoing the previous year's 'Pretty In Pink' which charted at #43, but it is that song which would end up qualifying them for this contest as a 1986 re-release made it their only UK top 20 hit as it reached #18 second time around thanks to its usage in a film of the same name.On 08/06/2025 at 18:40, Severin said:HiThanks for running this. Some unexpected choices for the artists in questions and a good few tracks I didn't know. Absolutely no contest for my top score however. Very much one of my favourite songs ever, and Shocking Blue was always going to do well with me.12 - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds10 - Shocking Blue08 - Young MC07 - Icicle Works06 - Vapors05 - Alphaville04 - Classix Nouveaux03 - They Might Be Giants02 - Helen Reddy01 - Zager & Evans1 25 The Vapors - News At Ten [???]2 22 The Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way [Severin]3 21 Nu Shooz - Point Of No Return [???]4 20 Donna Lewis - Agenais [???]5 20 Army Of Lovers - Obsession [???]6 19 Alphaville - Sounds Like A Melody [???]7 19 White Town - Undressed [???]8 18 The Icicle Works - Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream) [???]9 18 Modern Talking - Atlantis Is Calling (S.O.S. The Psychedelic Furs slip to 2nd, with Nu Shooz, Donna Lewis and Army Of Lovers also shuffling down a place each as none pick up points here. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds get a welcome first 12 which propels them into the top 10. Already after 5 votes there are only 2 songs left on 0 points, who will get off the mark first?
June 15Jun 15 Love Buzz is one of Shocking Blue's best, along with Venus and Never Marry a Railroad Man. Nirvana's version is a great interpretation
June 15Jun 15 I hope The Psychedelic Furs go on to win this. That Freheit album is very good all the way through so I picked the second best track from it (Keeping The Dream Alive being my favourite).
June 15Jun 15 Author Vote 6Jester is behind Indian-born British indie/electronic singer and producer White Town with 'Undresed', the follow-up to his 1997 UK #1 (and only top 40 hit) 'Your Woman'. It's fair to say very few people would be able to name a second White Town song off the top of their heads but this song did give him a very minor second chart entry, peaking at #57. 'Undressed' was on the podium a few votes ago and is currently mid top 10.On 09/06/2025 at 15:56, Jester said:HelloOooooh Blobby blobby blob blob. Jester's votes change the leader once again, it is now The Icicle Works who lead after picking up their first 12, 2 points ahead of a similarly surging Modern Talking who get 10 points here. You'll note that Jester made a bit of an error with the votes here and included a 9 pointer and 11 songs, I've just pushed everything below Modern Talking down 1 point. We'll blame Blobby interference. Army Of Lovers are back up to 3rd, The Vapors slip off the top spot down to 4th and Donna Lewis drops to 5th. Mr. Oizo is lifted off 0 leaving poor brave Yo-Yo Ma and Bobby McFerrin alone at the bottom.
