Robbie Williams Previews New Album With Anthemic Single ‘Spies'

Robbie Williams has returned with a rousing new single, "Spies." The track comes ahead of the British musician's forthcoming LP, Britpop, out Oct. 10. "Spies" was written by Williams with his long-time collaborators Karl Brazil and Owen Parker. The song sees Williams reflecting on times past as he sings, "We used to stay up all night/ Thinking we were all spies/ Praying that tomorrow won't come."

"I set out to create the album that I wanted to write and release after I left Take That in 1995," Williams said in a statement. "It was the peak of Britpop and a golden age for British music. The new record is raw, there are more guitars and it's even more upbeat and anthemic than usual. I'm immensely proud of this as a body of work and I'm excited for fans to hear this album."

Williams announced Britpop in May with single "Rocket," a collaboration with Black Sabbath's Tommy Iommi. Along with "Spies," the musician shared the track list for Britpop, which notably includes a song titled "Morrissey." The album is available for pre-order via Williams' website.

Ahead of the release of the album, Williams is on tour in Europe and the U.K. The Britpop Tour continues July 21 in Berlin at Waldbühne. Williams will also perform at Come Together Festival in Newcastle, England, in August and Aftersun Fesitval in Floriana, Malta, in September.

Britpop Track List:

1. Rocket

2. Spies

3. Pretty Face

4. Bite Your Tongue

5. Cocky

6. All My Life

7. Human

8. Morrissey

9. You

10. It's OK Until The Drugs Stop Working

11. Pocket Rocket

Robbie Williams has shared a brand new video for his recent single ‘Spies’ – watch it first on Rolling Stone UK below.

‘Spies’ was released earlier this month, written by Robbie and long-time collaborators Karl Brazil and Owen ParkerIt is the second single from Williams’ upcoming new album, BRITPOP, and its Leo Baron-directed video takes fans inside the ongoing world tour behind the new record.

Discussing BRITPOP, Robbie said: “I set out to create the album that I wanted to write and release after I left Take That in 1995. “It was the peak of Britpop and a golden age for British music. The new record is raw, there are more guitars and it’s even more upbeat and anthemic than usual. I’m immensely proud of this as a body of work and I’m excited for fans to hear this album.”

Watch the energetic video for ‘Spies’ only on Rolling Stone UK below.

Reviewing one of two London shows of the BRITPOP tour, Rolling Stone UK said: “At the core of the show, though, is the same showmanship that has propelled Robbie to national treasure status over the last 30 years. He serenades a fan who has travelled from China during ‘She’s the One’ and spends large portions endearingly talking about how his family have saved his life.

“He ends the main portion of the set with ‘My Way’, which feels like the most appropriate of closers. Here is an artist offering a firm two fingers up to the idea of cool and resolutely dancing to the beat of their own entertainment-packed drum. The result, for the most part, is one of the most thrilling stadium shows of the year.”

More shows in the UK are set to be added to the BRITPOP tour soon. Pre-order the album here for early access to future dates.

It was fast work :)

It's better than Be A Boy video but it's not Strong. I think would be better to make a live video but with a studio voice.

I am reading that Robbie will be on BBC Radio 2 on Thursday AUG 21st where it seems he will the soog Human from the Britpop album. Does anyone know if this song is a cover of the Killers song Human or a new song written for this album

I cannot imagine that it is a cover, despite I loved Human from the killers and also in Rob's version

Me too -I love that song and Rob's version but am sure the one on the album will be original.

He always has great song titles - I'm intrigued by some of them on this album.
