Gorillas played a new album in full yesterday!

It was a no-phones show, so but there's bits and pieces on YouTube. The guests that performed with them were:

  1. Anoushka Shankar

  2. Black Thought & Asha Puthli

  3. Sparks

  4. Kara Jackson

  5. Joe Talbot (IDLES)

  6. Johnny Marr

  7. Trueno

  8. Omar Souleyman & Yasiin Bey

  9. N/A

  10. Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals)

  11. Paul Simonon (The Clash) & Johnny Marr

  12. Black Thought & Kara Jackson

Hopefully it's not long until we hear it recorded!

Fantastic to have Orange County added to the Radio 1 playlist this week - easily the song of the year so far for me.

  • Good news: ‘Damascus’ is out tomorrow, and the album has been moved forward to 27th February!

LOVE this performance - the song is definitely my favourite from the album so far:

yay... but March :/ come on Damon, do a Taylor :D

Oh love Sparks, they were on the last series of Jools in the Spring, hope this gets playlisted on R1, but I doubt it!

Loving this at the moment - that caption is very very catchy.

It charted at #73 which isn't bad, one of their higher charting songs since their 2017 comeback. It's also the first singles chart appearance for Sparks since 'Perfume' reached #80 in 2006!

Obsessed with the fact that Omar Souleyman is featured on this album! I’m now slightly more hyped about this release.

The singles from this so far have been hit or miss for me, I think 'Orange County' is my favourite so far as well and also loved 'Damascus' and 'The Happy Dictator', 'The Hardest Thing' is good but not sure why it is its own song rather than just being an intro to 'Orange County', the other two haven't done much for me ('The Manifesto' has some interesting ideas but the execution was a bit sloppy).

oh my god the opener, what a great scene-setter

halfway through but I am very impressed at how much this feels like a cohesive project so far, the last few albums have had a bunch of great songs on them but are a bit disjointed as complete works

That was wonderful.

Definitely the most I've been impressed by an album of theirs since Plastic Beach, it feels like the highlights never stop, it all feels really cohesive even while retaining Gorillaz' natural eclecticness, the themes of mortality (and the numerous posthumous appearances of former collaborators) really add a lot of weight to it. Honestly wonderful Damon and Jamie are still coming up with ideas like this, even if, as reviews make clear, it was spurred on by their own losses, 25 years after they started this project.

This album is currently a comfortable #1 in the mids 🤩

I need to dive into the lore more but this was a great listen, feels like a spiritual successor to the aforementioned Plastic Beach.

'Delerium' thoughhhh 🔥🔥

Not sure why I was sleeping on 'Damascus' but a switch has flipped in the context of the album, finding it very infectious now.

Yeh the songs sound a lot better in album form, great first listen today especially the first two songs which blend beautifully and set you up for the story throughout!
