I like what they did with that performance.

Maybe he is paving the way for a couple of gigs there.

The 51-year-old star posed with fans outside the Blythswood Hotel ahead of the gig at the iconic venue.

Prior to launching his solo career, Williams was one-fifth of popular boyband Take That, behind hit songs including Pray, Everything Changes and Sure.

Back in 2024, he released the biopic Better Man, where he is played by a CGI chimpanzee – a comment on how he feels like a “performing monkey”.

In 2023, he was the subject of a self-titled Netflix documentary series which documented his struggles with addiction and mental health issues.

His other chart-topping albums include Life Thru A Lens (1997), I’ve Been Expecting You (1998), Escapology (2002), Intensive Care (2005) and Rudebox (2006).

He has also had seven number one singles in the UK with songs including Millennium, Rock DJ and Candy.

The setlist for the gig is expected to include:

  • Rocket

  • Spies

  • Pretty Face

  • Bite Your Tongue

  • Cocky, All My Life

  • Human

  • Morrissey

  • You

  • It’s OK Until The Drugs Stop Working

  • Pocket Rocket

Scottish fans queue 'from 2am' to catch Robbie Williams gig

4th February

Barrowland

EAGER fans have been queuing outside the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow “since 2am” to catch Britpop icon Robbie Williams’ gig tonight.

Crowds began to gather outside the legendary music venue in the city’s east end from the early hours of Wednesday morning to secure a good spot at the musician’s sold-out show. Williams is treating fans to a full live performance of both his classic album Life Thru A Lens and his latest release, Britpop, which supporters say they are “buzzing” to hear in person for the first time.

Wrapped in blankets and rain ponchos, groups of friends shared why they’ve been standing in line for hours.

Levkae Mueller and Shirley Kernek travelled 10 hours by car from Hamburg, Germany, to London before flying to Glasgow to make the concert.

The pals even donned custom jackets featuring nods to Williams’ new album and his smash hit film Better Man.

Levkae said: “It took 10 hours to drive from Hamburg to London, and then we flew from London to Glasgow.

We’ve been fans since 1998, around about then. I’ve been to around 100 of his gigs. We came to Glasgow for the venue because it’s such a small venue, and he’s doing the new album.

“It’s a special gig, and we love Glasgow.”

Claudia Ifieger made the journey from Austria to the city to watch the singer.

The 18-year-old explained she had been queuing since 5am, but that her friend had braved the rain to line up from 2am.

She commented: “I got here at 5am, and my friend got here at 2am. It’s really good seeing all these people that you only see at rock concerts.

“I call them my friends because they are my friends. This is very important to me. I’m going to every show on the tour, so I’m heading to Liverpool tomorrow and London after that.

“I really love Robbie.”

Meanwhile, Raika Melde, Kathe Ehrke, and Nadine Godenrath travelled to Glasgow earlier this week from Germany.

Kathe said: “It was very hard to get tickets, and we were lucky to get them. You could only buy two at a time, and there are three of us, so it was a little bit difficult, but we got them in the end, and we’re very happy.

“Tomorrow we head to London for the next show. I’ve been listening to Robbie for 33 years. We can’t wait to hear the new songs live.”

Nadine added: “It’s a very exclusive gig and we’re very excited to see him close up. We’ve been queuing since 4am.”

Kayla Toplish and Emma McShane had been standing in line for several hours to secure good spots at the gig.

They highlighted that the tickets had been Christmas gifts for their mums.

Kayla said: “We’re queuing for our mums, this was a Christmas present for them. I’ve been a fan as long as I can remember, and I’ve been to all his previous tours as well.

“I really want him to play Selfish Disco. I’ve only seen him at bigger venues, so seeing him at a smaller venue where he started out is good.”

Emma added: “My mum is a big fan, and I think it was around three or four years ago that I became a fan.

“It was when I went to see him in concert for the first time. This is only my second gig I’ve been to. I really want to hear Let Me Entertain You.

“The first time I saw him, the area where we were sitting was a restricted view, so I barely saw him, but this time he’ll be right there, so as you can imagine, I’m buzzing.

By Stacey Mullen

Verdict *****

Singer Robbie Williams put on a once-in-a-lifetime performance at the city’s famous Barrowlands on Wednesday night - creating a show now etched in the venue’s history for decades to come.

The screams were deafening when the pop star took to the legendary stage to kick off the first night of his new tour Long 90s - a tribute to one of music’s greatest decades.

Wearing a Primal Scream T-shirt in honour of the Glasgow band, the star soaked in the admiration before a crowd of over 2,000 fans to perform his debut album Life Thru A Lens in full.

Lazy Days kicked off the set as Williams entertained the audience from the get-go by chatting about the new Take That documentary on Netflix.

Referring to his famous spat with singer Gary Barlow, he joked: “Did you all watch the Take That documentary?

“I spent the last week going, 'What a f***ing a******e I was?'"

He then reassured: “I love my boys, we are in a different place now.”

The 1997 power ballad Angels, which marked the beginning of Williams’ ascent to solo superstardom created a moment to remember as the 51-year-old remained silent draped in a Saltire flag while his army of fans sang in unison.

Let Me Entertain You then sent the crowd wild with the anthem not losing its power in such an intimate setting.

Confession. I am a Robbie Williams fan. A Take That OG since I was seven years old.

I have seen Robbie with the band, and as a solo artist at venues across Scotland including the Hydro and Hampden Park.

But watching him thrive at the Barras is unique.

I think I am more than qualified to say the Robbie of today is content and confident.

He sounds incredible in this setting. His new album is magnificent and recognises a period in music we will never see again.

We should celebrate everything that was great about the 90s. His show left me yearning for the simplicity of the decade I grew up in. Can we go back?

After a brief break, he returned to the stage to open with Rocket which lifted the atmosphere while Spies has the makings of a classic Robbie anthem. He then dedicated Pretty Face to his beautiful wife Ayda.

He smiled from ear to ear, “Thank God I released the album before these f***ing gigs. Sixteen number one albums, God bless you.”

He then promised: “I want more. I’m not stopping.

“I’m going to slide this into the f***ing grave.”

Even if he wanted to, I doubt Williams would be allowed to retire with his fans mouthing every word of his latest release including Human which recognises our transition into using AI and the upbeat Morrissey proving to be an ample opportunity to boogie.

The funky Selfish Disco - taken from the deluxe edition of the album - won the fan vote for him to perform as a one off with the star admitting he should have included it in the album.

The ultimate showman in any setting, Williams tested the ‘play the album in full’ concert format to its limit, leaving us asking: what’s next? We wait in anticipation.
