Ed Sheeran being snubbed was the right thing to do.

Putting Olivia Dean in the competive pop category instead of the weaker r&b line up feels like a weird choice.

Also now it makes sense why Jade missed albums as if they consider Dean pop and they have put Lily Allen in then to the brits that's two pop albums in best albums already.

What exactly is the qualifying for Defying Gravity to get in?

I hate when people are across two categories. You could’ve easily kept Lola to Pop and thrown Florence or someone an Indie nom.

Lola's stuff this year isn't really Alt or Rock. Her earlier stuff is. 'Don't Hate Me' is a great alt track

I really want Lily to win best album, I don’t mind Olivia winning everything else but West End Girl is SO good.

The dance act nominations look a bit clunky. Calvin Harris and Clementine are not a self contained act, it was a one-off collab? Ditto Fred again.., Skepta & PlaqueBoyMax.

Freddy and Skepta did do an EP together at least. Still odd.

All are rock bands

Brits tends to favour rock and indie bands is why little mix only won it once and did One direction ever win it

Ed not getting any noms is a bit odd not that he was likely to win any anyway

Whoops missed single but still 😮

Yes definitely backing Lily to win Best Album. It would be a massive moment for her especially considering she never won with her first two nominated albums. Speaking of which, her first nomination for Best Album in 16 years!

Feels its Olivia Deans to take especially with her album still at number 1 unless they don't want to do three years in a row where one artist sweeps

The album award is critically driven isn't it? Like I don't think they look at whether or not it's at or been to #1 as a deciding factor it's more about the content of the record

It definitely helps though, like with Future Nostalgia & BRAT.

If they were going off critically received, Jade shouldn't be missing from albums though

I feel like Sam, Lily and Dave were all highly critically acclaimed, Olivia too but it has been criticised of containing some filler. I loved it though but definitely prefer Lily’s.

I thought the Wolf Alice album was considered marmite or a step down by many people so was surprised to see that there. That over JADE is a bit of a poor call for me.

I just thought isn't the international single of the year decided by sales? If so then surely "sports car" should be there as it's sold more than some there?

V odd and it can't be quality considering some of the stuff nominated lol

Some of the categories need their criteria's shaking up tbh.

  • If they're continuing with the genre awards, then the artist should have at least 3 songs where they're credited (not necessarily "singles") released within the time frame before that act is eligible.

  • Song Of The Year categories should be treated like the Album Of The Year category. I don't mind that there are as many as 12 songs or that it's fan voted, I think the eligibility should be based on critical acclaim and not "sales" driven anymore. Being so sales driven is such an outdated concept now.

Still fun to predict and guess etc..

Not really any major surprises in the nominations this year (apart from perhaps Alex Warren being snubbed for international artist, not that I necessarily expected him to win as I don't think he's exactly a critic bait artist but not even making the shortlist is a little surprising) - love to see Bad Bunny and ROSALÍA both getting nominations though ❤️ (looks like that is the first time either have been nominated, I thought Bad Bunny might have got one once before but appears not) and I guess I wouldn't have called Wolf Alice being on the Album of the Year list either, not mad about it though even if it's not their best work. Yay for the nominations for Dave, EsDeeKid and PinkPantheress as well among others ~

I did think the dance act nominations list was a mistake on the BBC website at first, that is really strange to list those collaborations as a single entity. At least when they've done that before it's been for collaborations that recorded an entire album together (e.g. Drake & Future getting an international group nomination once), there's really no sensible reason to be nominating 'Calvin Harris & Clementine Douglas' rather than just Calvin.

Also I guess they must have dropped the requirement for an artist to have had a top 40 single or album to get a nomination? A couple of the acts on the R&B act list have never had either. I guess it's quite difficult to fill out that category with British names.

I did hear a rumour they were struggling with the r&b category. Which is why it makes no sense to put two r&b artists in pop when they make both that could have gone there but okay. Wonder if Leigh-Anne could score a nom next year if they're even consider her r&b
