The second appearance from the record-breaker Alessi Rose, 'pretty world' was released at the end of 2024 as the third single from her then upcoming EP 'for your validation'. Last.fm tells me that it's actually the 1 year anniversary today since I first heard this song and I'm still not bored of it yet. Alessi wrote this while embarking on her first tour and is about the overwhelming emotions she felt of achieving her dreams but still feeling a sense of imposter syndrome. With it being an ode to live shows, there's no surprise that this has been a bit of a crowd favourite on each of the three occasions I've seen her live. Although I do love her pure-pop moments, I do think she kills this slightly more alt-pop sound.

Best Part: The rousing, lovely chorus

With ROSÉ being a native speaker and JENNIE and LISA being pretty much fluent, it's been well-reported that JISOO has been self-conscience with her English skills and it's incredibly rare to hear her speak it any interviews. And, especially on earlier BLACKPINK songs, you can hear her unfamiliarity when she had to sign the odd-phrase. But, she's obviously been working hard on it and challenged herself with two of the songs on this EP being practically fully in English and I just wanted to say how brilliant she nails it, particularly on this track. Her pronunciation is near-perfect and you'd never know that it had been an issue for her before. I realise I haven't said much about this actual song but as someone who can't speak a second language, I can't imagine how difficult it must be to record a whole EP in a language other than your first, especially when learning it as an adult, so I want to give her as much praise as possible. The song is itself is really fun with an instantly memorable chorus and (in my theme of the year) a really fun bridge. As you can see above, this landed way higher in my post-played list but we've waited so long for a whole EP from JISOO so you can't blame me for spamming it like crazy. Now, we just need an album now please JISOO.

Best Part: JISOO's confidently killing her English pronunciations

In a rare case of title and artist joining perfectly to sound like an answer Richard Osman would use for answer-smash, Taylor (Swift)'s ode to iconic actress (Dame Elizabeth) Taylor becomes the final track from the first quarter of my chart. As one of the stand-out opening three tracks that trick you into thinking that you're listening to an all-timer album, it was no surprise that it also became one of the tracks that took up Taylor's spots in the official UK top 3 on release week. Is it a tad over-written? Maybe but that's usually part of Taylor's charm as a song-writer (I'll take it over the tone deaf nature to the lyrics of 'CANCELLED!' and 'Actually Romantic') and it certainly doesn't negate how epic that chorus sounds every time it comes in when you have headphones on.

Best Part: The epic transition into the chorus

Hi Lewis hi hope your 2026 is off to a good start!

Just been playing catch-up with your thread happy

My favourites from your album chart are courtesy of Addison and Dave wub two highly enjoyable projects in different ways!

'The Boy Who Played the Harp' is my top highlight from your songs countdown so far, also <3 it was a personal chart #1 for me, Dave's third to date after 'Heart Attack' and 'In The Fire'. The 'And I Love Her' sample works surprisingly well and he indeed glides across the song, with impactful words as ever. Other standouts to drop out so far are 'Hampstead', 'Timeless' and 'Favourite Daughter'!

Hi

My 2026 hasn't been too bad so far thanks. I hope yours has started good too!

Two very different album picks there indeed. There's one entry from each in my top 100 to look forward to.

Very nice choices for Dave #1s there. 'The Boy Who Played the Harp' is such a well-polished track.

Thanks 🙂

I said that ITZY had been beaten by a solo-track this year and it was YEJI who released her debut EP 'AIR' which spawned the single of the same name. All five members had their own solo track on their 'BORN TO BE' album last year and YEJI's ('Crown On My Head') was the lowest-charting of them in my EOY chart (#94) but she's the only member to have a solo release this year and it's a stronger track. There's some really fun synths on the production and YEJI puts in a confident, star-making performance. She's never been a stand-out member of ITZY for me but she really stepped up here and completely kills it.

Best Part: The insanely fun drum-break at the start of the first chorus

Alessi's third appearance which puts us a quarter of the way through her entries. This one goes particularly hard in a concert setting. It's a bit of a crowd-pleaser and with a pretty easy chorus to sing-along with, everyone is able to join in unison to create a special atmosphere. In a few years, when she's a superstar (it's happening!), this will the one of those songs that defines an artist and the fans will demand that it remains through every tour. It's also a great showpiece for her vocal ability.

Best Part: Singing along to the chorus with every other fan in attendance on two different tours

2025 73 Nice To Each Other

2025 was Olivia Dean's year. Her rise seemed to be rapid and, although she hasn't seen quite the same ascent in my charts, I'm certainly not against her success as her voice is lovely. I do quite enjoy 'Man I Need' and it's one of my top songs of last year that missed my weekly charts but it's 'Nice To Each Other' that I feel should have been the bigger one. I feel like a lot of her songs I've heard previously just landed in the 'nice but inessential' category but it looks like she's finally found that extra something that pushes her songs into being something special. The only reason this has landed so low on the last.fm chart was because I heard it so often anyway that I didn't feel the need to search for it of my own accord.

Best Part: The extra spice she adds to the 'I don't want a boyfriend' line

Janet Devlin's EOY History:

2025 72 Emotional Rodeo

2025 97 Candy

This may be slightly on the campier side of country music again (with some 'hair metal' influences too), this was released in 2024 as the introduction to Janet's new swing in direction towards a new genre and, if you're trying to shred your past image and re-invent yourself, why not start with a bang and throw absolutely everything, including the kitchen sink, at it? It's probably the most unsubtle song in my whole countdown but that's what makes it so fun. I feel like people from the southern America would actually hate this and it's the equivalent of an American rapping like Munya Chawawa's Unknown P and claiming it's drill music but it really works for me. The lyrics are cliché-abound but the play of the 'emotional rodeo' phrase in general is quite fun

Best Part: The pure boldness and excessiveness

2025 71 See U Tonight (Kylie Cantrall feat. ILLIT)

The latest in the never-ending conveyer belt of Disney-star-turned-pop-star is Kylie Cantrall who's 'B.O.Y.' EP really impressed me last year and has spawned three EOY top 100 entries. The first of which being 'See U Tonight' which features two members (YUNAH & MINJU) of K-Pop girl-band ILLIT. A lot of the EP is R&B-tinged which you might not guess if you just listen to this one which is pretty bubblegum. The first thing you notice is that the song interpolates 'I Wonder If If I Take You Home' by Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam (or 'Don't Phunk With My Heart' if you're more my age). It feels like 2025 saw fewer interpolations than in other recent years but we still got one of the better examples of the trend with this. ILLIT really fit well into the song too and I wish there was an extra verse which would stop this from feeling so light.

Best Part: The fun use of the interpolation

The second, but certainly not the final, appearance from a solo BLACKPINK member in the top 100, 'with the IE (way up)' was an album track from 'Ruby' and is the second song in a row which features a prominent sample. This time it's JLo's 'Jenny from the Block' that gets a modern twist. The late-90s/early 00s Hip-Hop vibes in this one are immaculate and JENNIE is able to put so much of her personality onto here.JENNIE often gets criticised for being 'lazy' in live performances but she came-alive in the solo-stages of the Deadline World Tour and her section was the most hype of the four and was what helped this track re-enter my chart and make the EOY list.

Best Part: How much she kills the medley of Handlebars and this on the tour

This is very theatrical at times (we shouldn't be too surprised coming from the star of Disney's Descendants franchise) and I'm sure you'll be able to hear why I made the Lady Gaga comparisons in an earlier post. I'm really loving this current phase of Dove's music where she's consistently releasing fun, little bangers. The titular opening line of the chorus of course refers to the iconic quote made by Kate Winslet in Titanic but I don't remember Rose every saying anything like '"Arch my back like the Triomphe". 🤣

Best Part: The melodramatic delivery of the chorus

2025 68 Crush (AJ Tracey feat. Jorja Smith)

AJ Tracey extends his record to make it an eight consecutive year with at least one entry in my EOY top 100. An envious record despite his latest album 'Don't Die Before You're Dead' being a tad underwhelming, only providing two EOY placements (including 'Joga Bonito' in 2024) despite a strong run of singles that missed out on the final tracklist ('Wifey Riddim 4', 'Bubble Bath'). AJ has found a distinctive sound and he can flow on these type of tracks all day but what makes this one stand-out is that Jorja tries to do the same thing. We're so used to hearing Jorja belt out hooks with one of the strongest voices in R&B today and, when this collaboration was announced, that's what I was expecting her to do but instead she decided to take on AJ at his own game and bar out in her own verse. With a proper old-school grime beat that samples Brandy's 'Love Wouldn't Count Me Out', this is the type of song UK rappers "just don't make anymore" and I'm so happy with brought AJ back to the top 40 for the first time in four years.

Best Part: Jorja switching it up and barring out on the verses

2025 76 Elizabeth Taylor

2025 86 Opalite

The first of only two official UK #1s in this countdown (although 'Not Like Us' did make last year's list), Taylor bagged her obligatory #1 with the lead-single from her latest album. Also serving as the album's opening track, 'The Fate of Ophelia' is just a really solid pop song and what I wanted when I heard Taylor and Max Martin were working together again. I've seen some people criticise the mixed-metaphors and cliched lyrics which I think is a bit petty and hypercritical. I think the next album is going to be an interesting one for Taylor. She seems like she's reached the point where she's become so big that the pushback against her is almost as big as the excitement surrounding her.

Best Part: Max Martin delivering what I wanted for a Taylor pop comeback

2021 28 feel like shit

2022 07 what would you do?

2022 27 she's all i wanna be

2022 68 you're so cool

2024 87 It's ok I'm ok

2025 66 Sports car

2025 85 TIT FOR TAT

2025 95 Revolving door

In my opinion, this is the moment when Tate went up a tier and became an A-List pop girlie because only someone at the top of their game can sell lyrics this cringy ('oh golly gee', 'we can uh uh in it'). The whispering chorus feels like it was a big risk too but it pays off and manages sultry and seductive when it could have just sounded silly. I was intregued to see how she was going to handle the chorus in an arena-concert setting and she just used it as an opportunity to take a dance break. Probably the right choice to be fair. I'm glad she's brought back this darker, R&B style of pop as she's so good at it. As you can see above, this was actually my 8th most played track of 2025 which just goes to show what a January single-release and February album-release can do for a song!

Best Part: The whispered chorus
