A song that had a long road to success in my chart. I remember hearing this when it debuted in the UK top 40 back in June 2024 and thinking it was ok and nothing more. But as it stuck around for a long time, it started to gradually win me over before it exploded in my affections after seeing her on tour and finally understanding Gracie and becoming a big fan. This is a pure-pop moment from Gracie with strong Taylor 1989 vibes with Lorde-like vocal effects. The chorus is undeniably catchy like all the best pop songs should have and it just demands that you sing along. She would have to do a lot to beat this in the rest of her career.

Best Part: Feeling the joy of the crowd at her show when this was performed

Addison has received a lot of praise for her debut album and I'm certainly a fan but, for me, most of the singles fell into the 'I like it' category rather than the 'I love it' category but there was one single this year that really stood out and it's the retro, synth-heavy, 8-bit sound of 'Fame is a Gun'. This is an absolute revolution from Addison. There's no-one else mimicking this sound currently but there really should be. It also has some of the best visuals of the year with it's shlocky trash-cinema music video. I love the fashion choices (the bright-pink trench coat, blonde wig and massive sunglasses combination is iconic), the choreography is brilliant and the grain on the video makes it feel like a lost-piece of media that's just been rediscovered. In general, I think the near-universal acclaim of this album has been a bit over-the-top but this song fully deserves every little last bit of praise it gets. I did think, during its three week run at #2, that this would be an EOY top 10 contender but unfortunately it did lose a little bit of its spark for me after I had it on repeat for a while. It's currently having a second-wind in the UK chart, it fully deserves all the success it gets.

Best Part: "I'm your dream girl but you're not my type"

Hi Lewis, we have got very similar music tastes! I love seeing fame is a gun and close to you so high up, as well as handlebars, rain dance, just keep watching, sports car, Ophelia and 15 minutes in your top 100!

Hi Lewis, I've been following this quietly but just got excited seeing 'Close To You' and 'Fame Is A Gun' back to back! I was late to 'Close To You' too but it's fantastic. I'm surprised we didn't hear much from Gracie last year but fingers crossed for new music this year!

Hi

'Fame is a Gun' getting lots of love like it deserves.

I think we will be getting some new music from Gracie this year. She doesn't want to leave it too long after finding such success.

I hope there will be more in the top 20 that you enjoy!

Thank you all 🙂

One of the things I'll remember most about 2025 was it being the beginning of a new era of music from Maisie Peters, her first releases post one of of my all-time top albums 'The Good Witch'. We had to wait late into the year and we only got three songs (and not even an album title) but all three we're #1 hits in my chart and take a place in my EOY top 20. The latest release of 2025 to make my top 100, this could have landed even higher had it been available earlier. Although, out of the three, it is my least favourite so it would have still landed behind those at least. The writing and production (and backing vocal) credits both include one Marcus Mumford, which may be why this found its way onto the Radio 1 playlist, and you can certainly hear the influence. A bit folkier then her last album, this feels like its leading to her folklore/evermore-era. She announced last year that she had worked with Mumford and within seconds of first hearing this, I could tell you that it was on this song! The first (but not final) song that is still charting into 2026.

Best Part: Hearing Gretta Ray on the backing vocals

2025 88 Take It or Leave It

The first of Alessi's four #1 hits in my chart and the only one from her 'for your validation' EP which celebrated it's first birthday two days ago. Tongue placed firmly in cheek with the title of this one as it's just a more anxious version of the previous song ('Say My Name In Your Sleep'). Both songs deal with the aftermath of a relationship and the other person moving on but, while Maisie explores it from a wiser, later-down-the-line perspective, this is certainly the initial stubborn, more petulant phase. Interestingly, the production never quite matches the pace of the slingshot thoughts and ideas in the lyrics which I think was a good choice.

Best Part: Another fun bridge

With two of these being heavily-associated to the declining influence of Hip Hop in my charts, 'Sk8' bags a few different records this year, it is the highest Hip-Hop track, t's the highest non-#1 in and it's the highest placement for a male artist in this year's countdown. But what a fun song this is! I first listed to this album making my way to work without looking at the features but as soon as it got to this song and I heard Ciara on the intro, I thought this sounded like a hit. And then it continued and the two members of EARTHGANG also dropped in with their own verses and then I thought 'oh this is a hit-hit'. Definitely a divisive moment on the album with some of JIDs fan-base just wanting him to make 'serious Rap' and don't like the notion of hooks. But for everyone else, this is a stone-cold banger. The energy is contagious and I can't see one listening to this and not getting swept away with the vibes, it's pure joy. This is a throwback in the very best sense and is the most Atlanta-song of the year, if they haven't Georgia haven't already claimed it as the state-anthem, what are they waiting for?

Best Part: Johnny Venus's mumbled outro

Aside from probably hearing a couple of her songs on the chart show growing up, I was largely unfamiliar of most of Hilary's music career, knowing more about her acting career. But I heard some positive whispers about her comeback single 'Mature' so decided to check it out and ended up being very impressed. Having heard her second-single, I can't say the same about that (although I do still like it), but this song feels very mature. Knowing Duff from being a teen-star in Lizzy McGuire, it's really cool to get a reflective track like this so many years down the line. But not only is it a cool topic for the song, it also just sounds really good too. Hilary's vocals aren't necessarily the strongest but the song-writing and production both co-authored by her husband, Matthew Koma, really work well in elevating it. It sounds very Carly Rae-Jepsen to my ears and I think it is a simply a brilliantly conceived and executing pop song.

Best Part: The guitar riff in the chorus that accentuate the lines

Just about squeezing above where 'Mantra' (#17) landed last year to become the biggest hit of the Ruby album, 'Love Hangover' saw JENNIE team up with Dominic Fike for this R&B/Pop hybrid. One of the most fun videos of the year was created with Riverdale's Charles Melton playing love-interest to a disaster-prone JENNIE who cannot stop dying on her dates in increasingly cartoonish ways in an on-the-nose metaphor for the struggles of dating. I've previously never been that taken with Fike's work but I really enjoy their verse here. They sound very laidback which pairs lovely with JENNIE's higher tones. I thought this one was going to have a quick lifespan for me after the first couple of weeks but it ended up sticking with me a lot more than I expected. I love this one a lot more than its chart run would suggest and marks the point where each song now was considered for inclusion in the EOY top 10.

Best Part: Fike's smooth verse

'twilight zone' was the single from the deluxe version of 'eternal sunshine' and bagged Ari another top 5 single in the UK charts. Named after the classic 1960s sci-fi anthology TV series, it sees Ari compare the surreal feeling of looking back at a past relationship that no longer feels real with the unnatural, eerie atmosphere that said show created. And much like the show, the song is a slow-build, a deceivingly slow synthy production, it sounds quite mysterious and playful with Ari's making use of her higher vocal range without ever overemoting. It's a pretty relaxing listen with the deeper message not clearer unless you actively listen. A twist just like the ones that made the show so famous.

Best Part: Max Martin & Ilya Salmanzadeh's subtle but effective production

We are certainly now at a point where I had serious consideration about whether they should be in the EOY top 10! 'That Could Be Me' was the second single to Alessi's 'Voyeur' EP and, after debuting at #2 behind the third ruling week by a song still to appear, a perfectly-timed (literally the same day it enter my chart) Dua Lipa supporting-gig saw it climb to top spot in its second week. A bit grittier than the other songs from the EP, there's a bit of a punkier influence here with a lot happening productionally in the chorus creating a (lite) wall-of-sound effect. Alessi really sells this one too with her vocal performance. A really confident delivery with the perfect amount of angst in the popular-bridge.

Best Part: The effected, yodel-like delivery of 'meeee eeeee'

Definitely a group that have a deceivingly sparse history in my chart, I love HAIM a lot more than that would suggest, with songs like 'The Steps' didn't even make my weekly charts but are still in frequent rotation on my Spotify. They've tended to be a group where their music grows on me more over time but 'Relationships' was incredibly instant, giving the sisters their first ever #1 hit and now (by far) their highest EOY chart placement. This continued their pretty unique-sounding rock/indie/pop hybrid but there also feels like they added some R&B influences here too. It's a weird mix but it works so well. It's such a breezy track, even with the potentially incongruous sounds which makes it a brilliant one to sing along with. I saw HAIM on their tour this year and had an absolute blast. They bring such a fun energy to their shows which is a tad heavier than on their recordings. Este sounded insanely good singing 'Cry' bit it seemed to take every of energy she had to hit those notes.

Best Part: Their catchiest hook yet

Its going to be an Ari-less Top 10 this year as 'dandelion' drops out at #12. I love how eclectic the deluxe tracks from the eternal sunshine are and the biggest risks are found on this track. The elephant in the room is certainty the jazzy trumpet intro that evokes a 1930's Paris Jazz-Bar vibe that the rest of the trap-influenced production does not necessarily fully commit to. It's an odd blend but I adore it. It feels like she went into the studio with Martin & Ilya and just gave themselves free rein to try whatever ideas popped into their mind. This might be my favourite vocals from the whole album. They're so playful while still sounding heavenly. This is another that I NEED to be on the setlist for the summer. Please Ari!!!

Best Part: The ridiculous jazz-trap clash of the production

Aside from #101, the most unfortunate place to land is #11. For whatever reason, there feels like little difference between an #11 and a #20 position but the prestige between an #11 and a #10 is enormous. Claiming the dubious honour this year is Reneé Rapp with 'Leave Me Alone', the lead-single from her sophomore album. She's particularly unlucky as 'Not My Fault' landed at a similar #12 last year. Certainly the messiest and most cocksure single of the year, this is Reneé's public persona wrapped up into 141 seconds. The references to her leaving of the TV show that helped build her fame ('The Sex Lives of College Girls), and the not so-complementary summarisation of its success afterwards, is playful but its the third verse where she cheekily proposes a reunion between her and her exes that leaves the most impact. A perfect way to end the song, even if I would love another minute of the madness. Your milage with this one will fully depend on how you get on with the repeated 'leave me alone bitch I wanna have fun' motif. I can see it really getting on some people's nerves! How apt is that official UK peak though! My 4th most listened to song last year, it does feel particularly egregious not having this in the top 10.

Best Part: The boldness and brashness to start an era in this way

twilight zone is a gorgeous track, I wish it had been a bigger hit in the long run wub
