"Sugar, We're Goin' Down" the next of my losses, one of FOB's better songs imo. I almost gave points to Bowling For Soup and Lovin' Spoonful, wish we could choose 50 songs! Love Eddie Murphy's original Party All The Time but the Sharam (one letter away from a VW MPV!) version is very meh. National Express is a song I like but not enough to give points.

The cut off point has been reached! It's the same points score as last year. 101 singles had a points total greater than 61 points. There were two on 62 points so I've allowed them both through rathe

VOTING HAS NOW CLOSED Thanks to the 40 people who voted. The results will start this evening.

  • Having a slice of toast while watching the evening news in honour. “I Hear You Now” was a gorgeous discovery at the 80s hit sessions, but I couldn’t quite fit it into my votes.

'Summer In The City' becomes (I believe) my 4th track to drop. It's a sixties classic, definitely deserved better.

OMG I got 2 losses today. One I gave only 1 point Party All The Time but the other one from Jesus and Mary Chain I gave huge 28 points. Since I was born 'under the April skies' I can connect so much with this special Indie song. 🥰

Three losses in quick succession:

'On My Radio' is one of the best British 2-Tone hits with a joyfully idiosyncratic chorus.

'April Skies' is powered by the blistering melodic guitarwork that was a highlight of JAMC's less commercial sonic adventures beforehand.

'Ho Hey' has such a charming innocence, I've never got tired of hearing it - the first song in over 50 years to manage 38 unbroken weeks in the Top 40!

Alexandra Burke - Broken Heels

Caesars - Jerk It Out

The Futureheads - Hounds Of Love

Fetty Wap - Trap Queen

The Sex Pistols - Holidays In The Sun

Robbie Williams - Lovelight

This was the Sex Pistols' fourth single and the last with John Lydon as their lead singer. The lyrics were inspired by a trip to Berlin they had taken to escape the hysteria surrounding them in London. Robbie Williams loses the last of his three songs while the other four acts here are making their one and only appearance.

Lonnie Donegan's Rock Island Line goes back even further, to 1956. It was the first of seventeen top 10 hits for him, including three number 1s.

Sorry to impose this 50s song on you guys but I’m gonna get a bit evangelical about it!

There’s a justification for saying this is the most important song in modern British popular music history, in that it all effectively started here! That may seem an exaggeration but Lonnie’s influence has passed down through so many great artists.

Paul McCartney, Brian May, Roger Daltrey, and Mark Knopfler are just a few who have all gone on record saying Lonnie was their first and biggest British musical inspiration. In his acceptance speech at the Brit Awards Jack White reminded the audience “Remember, Lonnie Donegan started it for you."

Later in his career he did become more famous as a writer of comic records, like ‘Dustman’ and ‘Chewing Gum’ but this was him at his peak.

It’s also one of my dad’s all time favourite songs, so that helps! He has a wonderful 10 inch 78rpm version on shellac!

I met Lonnie’s son, Peter, a couple of years ago, a lovely guy who is still playing his dad’s songs live and keeping his legacy going.

Cascada - Miracle

Pulp - Help The Aged

Presidents Of The United States Of America - Peaches

Sash! featuring Shannon - Move Mania

Texas - I Don't Want A Lover

We had The Stranglers on five points with Peaches and now another song called Peaches comes along. The Seattle band had four top 40 hits from 1995/96 with this one giving them their highest chart position. Also from the mid 90s, comes Help The Aged, the last of five top 10 hits by Pulp. I Don't Want A Lover from 1989 was Texas' debut single. They would have to wait another eight years for their next top 10 hit, 'Say What You Want'.

Bob Dylan - Positively 4th Street

The greatest take down in the history of music, I wouldn’t fancy being the person Bob wrote this about! Fantastic lyrics, may be my favourite Dylan song, and that’s very high praise indeed.

Another loss today so one on each of 30-33 (at least they all required more than one voter in that range) - all the singles from The Sex Pistols' debut are classics, and 'Holidays In The Sun' speaks the most directly about what was happening outside the UK at that time.

Just catching up on the countdown (great work Rollo, really enjoying it so far) and realised I’ve lost quite a few of my favs. Big Fun is peak Detroit Techno, On My Radio fantastically upbeat Ska and Holidays In The Sun my favourite of the brilliant 4 initial Sex Pistols singles

I remember following Broken Heels’ chart progress at the time like a hawk. The iLoon days! cheeseblock It’s not aged great like a lot of her album though for me.

Kylie Minogue - Come Into My World

Nicki Minaj - Pound The Alarm

Simply Red - Stars

From 1991, this was Simply Red's third top 10 single and also the title track from their fourth album which was the UK's best selling album in both 1991 and 1992, the first time this had been achieved since 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' did the same thing in 1970 and 1971. Kylie Minogue and Nicki Minaj both have one song left.

Come into my world , decent track but one of kylies worst

Pound the alarm is a bop though 👌

Stars a decent track too 🙌

The Beautiful South - You Keep It All In

Jason Donovan - Hang On To Your Love

Deacon Blue - Real Gone Kid

Erasure - Breath Of Life

Billy Joel - An Innocent Man

When I reviewed 'Uptown Girl' on my 1983 number 1 singles ranking recently, I said that this was my favourite track from the album it's on so it's good to hear it now. The other four songs are all from 1988 to 1992. We have the Beautiful South's follow-up to their number 2 hit 'Song For Whoever', the first of three top 10 hits by Deacon Blue, the last of seven consecutive top 10 singles by Jason Donovan and Erasure's eleventh top 10 hit.

Lots of losses for me today! "I Don't Want A Lover" and "Jerk It Out" are very underrated classics. Very surprised "Hounds Of Love" didnt do better, thought it would be right up the streets of some voters here! Futureheads are local legends here so had to score them highly. "Peaches" is one of my earliest musical memories, it's a fun song, used to love singing it in the car with my dad. Listening back years on from that I'm surprised I was allowed to listen to it 😂
