Sunday at 13:213 days Author 116. THE WAY I ARE- Timbaland Featuring Kerry Hilson & D.O.E. (442,700) YEAR: 2007PEAK POSITION: 1WKS ON CHART: 36 Timbaland was (probably) the king of the charts during 2006 and 2007, this being his second chart topper in a row. It famously defeated Kate Nash’s “Foundations” to the top by just 16 copies and bought the mighty “Umbrella”’s run at the top to an end. The promo was filmed in Salford (randomly).
Sunday at 13:233 days Author 115. CALL ON ME- Eric Prydz (444,900) YEAR: 2004PEAK POSITION: 1WKS ON CHART: 25 Where softcore porn meets pop- well that’s how if was painted in 2004 at any rate. Yes another suggestive video put to a dance track was nothing too unusual at the time but this one was maybe a little more risque that usual- but it clearly worked with this song become the 4th biggest seller of the year with 5 weeks at No 1 in two different stints even if it recorded the lowest tally for a No 1 at the time (with 21,749 sales).
Monday at 14:082 days Author 114. INDEPENDENT WOMEN PART ONE- Destiny’s Child (445,300) YEAR: 2000PEAK POSITION: 1WKS ON CHART: 15 The first UK No 1 single for an American all girl group in 11 years when it hit the top in late 2000, this was of course used in the film “Charlie’s Angels” and the last single by the group to feature the vocals of Farrah Franklin who had left that summer to see the group become a trio.
Monday at 14:102 days Author 113. PAPARAZZI- Lady Gaga (458,555) YEAR: 2009PEAK POSITION: 4WKS ON CHART: 35 Of course she’s on this list- the undoubted star of 2009 even makes the rundown with a song that only made No 4. The lady herself best describes what the song is about “What am I really trying to say here? What will the act of me writing this song really do? Me making a conscious decision to write about the paparazzi – I thought about performance art and shock art and how Paris Hilton and her sister and Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie are shock artists in their own way. They're not necessarily doing fine arts – something they put in the museums – but it's an art form. That's what this song is trying to say”- loving those 00s references!
Monday at 14:122 days Author 112. WHEN LOVE TAKES OVER- David Guetta Featuring Kelly Rowland (447,855) YEAR: 2009PEAK POSITION: 1WKS ON CHART: 20 A song that started life as an instrumental which Guetta played at a gig in the summer of 2008 and which Rowland was present. She loved it and later asked Guetta if she could write lyrics to it to which he obliged. Despite that Rowland’s record company were not keen on it and it was left there until Guetta started work on his “One Love” album in early 09 when it got dusted down and became the first single to be taken from it. It became Guetta’s first No 1 and Rowland’s 2nd solo one, indeed it entered at No 7 due to a midweek release to tackle an early instance of a copy version which had been issued.
Monday at 14:362 days Oh wow that's a great showing for 'Paparazzi'! I was mad on anything Gaga at the time and long-term 'Paparazzi' has held up well from that era, one of her most memorable music videos too.
Monday at 14:452 days Only good songs on page 8 so far. Good R&B from Timbaland and Destiny's Child. Great dance tunes from Eric Prydz and David Guetta .... and my favourite out of the lot from Lady Gaga.
Tuesday at 11:461 day Paparazzi was what got me into Gaga. She cemented herself as a creative force with that video. Not big on When Love Takes Over but glad it gave Kelly a second UK #1 at least. It also led to their 2010 collab Commander which I preferred at the time!
Tuesday at 19:531 day Author 111. OOPS…I DID IT AGAIN- Britney Spears (451,468) YEAR: 2000PEAK POSITION: 1WKS ON CHART: 14 Not the youngest solo female to make UK No 1, nor the youngest to get two chart toppers, but she was the youngest to score a hattrick of UK chart toppers at just 18 (beating Billie Piper by a fortnight to the honour). Yes in 2000 Spears was probably the most written about popstar of the time and a second album was crunch time for her, no need to worry when she had this banger in the bag, another Cheiron creation, it came with another memorable promo which was a space/Titanic concept and featured the now iconic red latex catsuit!
Tuesday at 19:551 day Author 110. BAD ROMANCE- Lady Gaga (458,555) YEAR: 2009PEAK POSITION: 1WKS ON CHART: 10 Winner of the “Record of the decade” on Buzzjack (24 times approx) this was the first single from “The Fame Monster” and was surprisingly not an instant No 1 but bobbed about until an “X Factor” performance saw it shoot to the top (a third chart topper in just 11 months) and then returned to the top spot to be the chart topper in the final week of the decade. The memorable promo was soon part of the pop landscape and cemented her status as pretty much the biggest thing in pop as the 2010’s opened.
Tuesday at 19:571 day Author 109. BEAT AGAIN- JLS (459,430) YEAR: 2009PEAK POSITION: 1WKS ON CHART: 25 Back to a time when the “X Factor” made the weather in the charts (roughly 2005-2012), you may recall this lot came second to Alexandra Burke in the 2008 series and did at least take a good 7 months out before releasing their first single. Wayne Hector and Steve Mac worked with the group to write their debut material and it at least meant that they started with an original composition and without the aid of an “X Factor” appearance to launch it.
15 hours ago15 hr Author 108. 4 MINUTES- Madonna Featuring Justin Timberlake (461,900) YEAR: 2008PEAK POSITION: 1WKS ON CHART: 27 Lead track from “Hard Candy” and Madonna’s final chart topper (to date) came with some help from both Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. It became her 13th chart topper (still a record to this day for a female solo act) but pottered about the top 10 for a month as a download release before making the top, no single (to that point) had spent 4 weeks in the top 10 as download only before making the top spot, her span of 23 years between first and current no 1’s was a record at the time as well!
15 hours ago15 hr Author 107. RISE- Gabrielle (462,400) YEAR: 2000PEAK POSITION: 1WKS ON CHART: 15 7 years after her first No 1 Gabrielle returned to the top in early 2000 with this track which sampled Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door”. Dylan was so impressed with the version that not only did he grant permission to use the sample but also waived his share of the royalties!
15 hours ago15 hr Author 106. JCB SONG- Nizlopi (465,600) YEAR: 2005PEAK POSITION: 1WKS ON CHART: 15 Peaking at No 160 in the summer of 2005 this was a small independent release that got a much fancier promo than that position would suggest and continued to be viewed and linked to over the following months. Finally with a major distribution deal and growing public demand the track was released and put up against Westlife, very much painted as a David Vs Goliath moment in chart terms. Naturally they won and scored a week at the top before the X Factor finalist single got released and then we promptly forgot about Nizlopi again.
