From the last mentioned songs "All The Things She Said" and "Don't Stop The Music". I have somewhat a weak spot for the Cheeky Girls. At least the Cheeky song was fun. theis accent is very funny. Need to re-listen to "Have A Cheeky Christmas" - that one is really cringe.

167. I’M YOURS- Jason Mraz (381,400)

WKS ON CHART: 51

Long runner alert!  Nothing on this list (so far) gets anywhere near the 51 weeks this was around for, Mraz was actually on his third album when this broke him in the UK, and this is actually one of only 2 tracks on the list to miss the top 10 here.  It did even better in the US where it charted on the Billboard Top 100 for a record (at the time) 76 weeks.

166. MAMBO NO 5- Bob The Builder (381,500)

I suppose in retrospect the chances of Bob The Builder getting a second No 1 without the help of the festive season were very slim but so it proved.  Indeed Bob The Builder was the first novelty act to score multiple chart toppers in the UK, it opened with 102k of sales in September 2001 but was removed from the playlists of some radio stations (Radio 2 for example) the week after as it was deemed inappropriate in light 9/11 with its references to construction.

Signed up by Wyclef Jean after he saw them performing, he went even further producing this debut track for them.  It originally featured on the soundtrack to the 1999 film “Life” but was remixed to sample Dr Dre’s “The Next Episode” for the final single version.  They didn’t make it to album 2 breaking up in 2003.

Still going strong for a third decade Madonna has multiple entries on this list, first up is her 2000 cover of the Don McLean classic which was featured in the film “The Next Best Thing” and was produced by man of the moment in 2000 William Orbit.  Madonna later stated that she shouldn’t have included it on the “Music” album and seems rather to have omitted it from her repertoire in later years.

Ah the annual X Factor Finalists single- invariably a cover, and invariably..a bit dull.  Anyway for 2009 we got this cover of the (recently) deceased Michael Jackson 1995 chart topper which arrived with aplomb at No 1 with 193k but was out of the top 10 after just 3 weeks.  Sadly they will also be back later on!

What were Radio 2 even doing playing Bob The Builder!! Interesting countdown so far, so many mid 00s classics low due to the terrible sales climate but it is what it is.

Agreed with Madonna on American Pie, it didn't suit the album and should have been a standalone soundtrack single.

A band who came through the ranks with support of the BBC. A tour of universities in 2007 and finishing 3rd in the “Sound of…” list on the BBC helped give them the required, and this debut single gave them their sole chart topper upon release.  It had originally been released on an indie label in 2007 generating interest and radioplay but the move to a major really propelled it into the big time.

Yeah, I was surprised to learn not only about Bob and the gang being pulled due to 9/11 insensitivity, but getting Radio 2 airplay in the first place lol

'That's Not My Name' is my favourite to appear in a while wub

A bit left field this one.  Kid Rock’s mix of rap and country had largely failed to impress here with just 2 top 40 hits to his name prior to this track, seems the idea of mixing “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Werewolves In London” was inspired!

West’s first chart topper relied heavily on Daft Punk’s “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” and saw him become embroiled in a slanging match with fellow rapper 50 cent.  Release of the pair’s album was scheduled for the same week in the US (and in the UK) causing 50 cent to boast about how he would beat Kanye to the top and if he didn’t then he would leave the music industry.  Well Kanye won on both charts but fiddy stuck around….still this is a reminder of what he could do before he went…..eccentric.

After a successful debut era it is fair to say that Furtado’s second album was less well received which prompted a rethink for album No 3.  Step forward Timbaland who proved just the ticket for the reinvention of Furtado as sex siren with a new look and a new sound- all very 06, and the hits started to roll.  This was the biggest of them from the album, becoming her first chart topper.

So here it is, the biggest selling non top 10 single of the decade, it was inspired by the “Grey Album” by Danger Mouse which mashed up The Beatles and Jay Z for an MTV mash up programme.  Taking the idea and this time using Jay Z with Linkin Park, the project resulted in an EP “Collision Course” with this as the lead single and we loved it with a mighty 43 weeks on the chart.

Multiple entries on the list for the SClubbers, this was the Children In Need single for 2001 and another Cathy Dennis Co-penned track.  It became their 4th chart topper and actually usurped their track “You” which was intended for release in late 01 but got pushed back to 2002 ultimately.  The promo is filmed in the famous Ennis building in Los Angeles.

Created by Casper for his nephew to use during his personal trainer session, this in turn led to an alternative version being created at some point in the early 00s which was sent to local radio stations in Chicago when it started to generate interest and soon it was a popular track on UK music TV Channels with its own dance.  It proved to be his only real hit (there was another top 20 single but who remembers that!) and he passed in 2023.

I was recently reminded of 'Maneater' when reviewing 2006 #1s and it has held up brilliantly 20 years on. Quite a sonic shift for Nelly indeed but she still sells it well and Timbaland's left-field production choices remain fresh.

'Cha Cha Slide' is probably the most nostalgic inclusion for me in a while even if not a musical favourite. A school disco / wedding classic!

Not their own track but certainly a breakthrough for them- twice.  They released it in early 2000 when it became their first top 40 hit making No 19 but was picked up later in 2000 by Sainsbury’s for their adverts featuring Jamie Oliver.  A smart remix by Stargate and the single was available again this time making No 7 in its 21st on the chart- a highly unusual feat for a single at the time.  The original song dates back to 1970 by Boffalongo but was a hit in 72 for King Harvest in the US though it didn’t chart here.

Probably the biggest girl group of 2001, they were of course riding on the high of their previous hit which resulted in their debut album being re-recorded with new member Jenny Frost and re-released with this track as the promo for it.  Of course a cover of The Bangles 1989 #1, it wasted no time in becoming their second No 1 on the trot beating Destiny’s Child to the honours.
