Radio 1 Playlist (09/01/26): Internet girl, get up off the treadmill and play the banjo song

maybe, but capital where quick on it and rinsed it so i highly doubt it wasn’t sent to them. It’s such a weird case. It’s easy to understand why radio 1 would skip on ‘Juno’ but this one is so weird. Especially cos the BBC is the only one now adding ‘Such A Funny Way’ while Global and Kiss have added ‘House Tour’ so it’s just super weird… and then there’s capital buzz with ‘Nobody's Son’

Capital have playlisted plenty of non singles so I wouldn't use them as any sort of barometer! Juno definitely wasn't a single here either.

My rule of thumb is that Radio 1 will be backing the big artists and won't actively snub singles from them. Radio 2 work similarly - they don't playlist non-singles away from "tracks from album x". C

it really depends. With big artists it’s so iffy to tell, but i guess if you look at all of the mentioned songs on Online Radio Box you could tell they are on city-based radio stations, which definitely indicates a push

Capital meanwhile have actively playlisted non-singles on occasion, including adding Opalite, The Life of a Showgirl and Wi$h Li$t to their playlist alongside The Fate of Ophelia upon the release of her album! Just means a Capital playlisting isn't necessarily an indicator of being a single (but it often can be).

i guess the difference we’re seeing is some songs are typically big campaign singles and then there’s radio singles, songs that only get shipped to radio but with no big push behind them. That would make a LOT more sense especially for artists like Taylor or Sabrina or Beyoncé (Jolene for example). Cause they still have to be sent to these stations in order for them to pick them up which would allow them to be “radio singles” tho most of them don’t have these big campaigns behind them

I feel like this is more the American approach where they have different radio formats, I don't think it applies the same way here at all. (also not sure songs have to be sent to radio for them to be played, but singles will be issued? Happy to be corrected by someone who knows the inner workings a little better than me)

Obviously whether When Did You Get Hot? was a single in the UK or not doesn't really matter, given it's been a big hit regardless and what Radio 1 do or don't play doesn't affect the chart like it used to!

i’m going off the independent artist approach where you have to upload your music, but i’m guessing major labels reach out with the song for their artists

I don't know conclusively either but my understanding is essentially what Joseph has explained (and this has also been explained several times previously!)

Don't think Radio 1 would skip an official Sabby C single.

But yes it's very ambiguous these days.

In any case, nothing 'feels' like a single unless I hear it on the radio many times!

They'll take it off when it takes off kink

Regarding the record, since I started tracking the playlist in 2012, it's 'Don't Forget My Love' by Diplo feat. Miguel which was (rather inexplicably) playlisted for 16 weeks. A few more tracks have had 14 and 15 weeks:

Diplo feat. Miguel Don't Forget My Love C-C-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-A-A-A 04/03/22 16

Drake feat. WizKid & Kyla One Dance B-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A 15/04/16 15

Rag'n'Bone Man Human C-B-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A 25/11/16 14

Da Baby feat. Roddy Rich Rockstar C-B-B-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A 24/04/20 14

Ed Sheeran Sing C-C-B-B-A-A-B-A-A-A-A-A-A-A 09/04/14 14

Gotye feat. Kimbra Somebody That I Used To Know C-B-B-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A 04/01/12 14

Noah Kahan Stick Season C-B-B-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A 13/10/23 14

16 weeks for Diplo was ridiculous.

I like it but it only got to #30!

Think the rest were #1s, no?

Edited by HiyaLuv!

The Diplo run was definitely excessive but it was extended by the fact it only started charting when it was already quite far into its B-List run iirc.

Except for 'Human' which was #2

Yeah that's right, it first entered the top 40 quite far into its B-list run, although I still don't think that justified its 16 weeks on the playlist!

Tune of the Week

Dean McCullough: Silva Bumpa & Wideboys feat. Dennis G - Wanna Party

Greg James: Sam Fender - The Treadmill

Rickie, Melvin and Charlie: Skye Newman - Lonely Girl

Matt and Mollie: Audrey Hobert - Sex And The City

Katie and Jerry: Bruno Mars - I Just Might

Jack Saunders: Robyn - Talk To Me

I wouldn’t be surprised if Midnight Sun is back on the playlist on Friday. I don’t think it went above the C List last time if I remember correctly?

Yeah it just spent 3 weeks on the C-list. It depends if the label have decided to re-push it.

Maybe they should publish their Hot Recurrents list again? End of Beginning is getting 2 spins a day so it's clearly on that list and Midnight Sun could go on too (Lush Life as well?)

i mean we’re kinda lucky that we get 3 tiers of music on the playlist so idk that might be pushing them. Then again the BBC aren’t too stingy so 🤷

I'm so glad they're supporting this. From what I remember last time they only supported 'Missing U' and didn't bother with anything else?

(Might be mistaken, it was a many years ago)
