I did find the documentary seemed more focused on Simon than any other talent shows, the auditions felt like a side plot,

I also agree it didnt matter where it was shown it would of yealed similar success

But if they have a sold out tour that is fantastic even with little chart success

  • This song, and honestly the overall package, isn't doing much of anything for me at all. I don't like or dislike the song, it's inoffensively straight down the middle - and very dated! Debuting with a

I like the song, it's really fun and I'll get a good few plays out of it - can't resist a fun, catchy boyband track, and it's very early 1D which sonically is great to my ears. As a band, I'm struggl

The band “December Tenth” said their threat of legal action was just a joke that they didn’t expect to get as much attention as it did. They literally had less than 500 monthly listeners on Spotify,

I think the programme kinda showed that Simon was out of touch with how things worked now - even to get people to audition for the band stalled initially well unless that was just for the documentary 🤣

I think insisting on in-person auditions and (seemingly) not even allowing any video applicants - at least for the very early auditions - gave them an unnecessary headache.

They've got a sold out tour and a top 100 debut single (in its debut week) - they are outdoing a lot of new boybands so i'd consider them doing quite well? Obviously top 5 expectations shows Simon's ignorance of how the charts work right now, but they must be bringing in the money with touring and merchandise revenue which seems strong.

Do we know where this Top 5 expectation thing has come from though? I can’t find any actual source for it. Could be wrong though.

I think it’s just a “sources claim” / “reportedly” sort of thing, so it could very well be completely made up!

I did previously wonder if Simon is au fait with how the singles chart works these days. If it’s true that he expected Top 5, then it was a very unreasonable expectation from him, and would show that his mind set is rooted in how things were a decade or longer ago.

On paper, #72 won’t scream “great result” to your average Joe. It’s probably only us avid chart followers (and people working in the industry) who understand the complexities of how difficult it can be to make a splash in the singles chart, particularly as a new artist. So that’s a reason why I think these articles are coming out about it… because it’s quite easy to spin that chart position as a failure and as a blow for Simon Cowell specifically.

Syco & EMI shouldn’t see a single’s chart position as being a false start. It’s actually a pretty encouraging start. The band’s social media numbers, and the engagement they get, is definitely strong for a new artist. As mentioned, their introductory tour has sold well already. I could certainly see their debut album go in towards the top end of the album chart with ease. (The album chart is another thing that Simon would need to have a better understanding of - how an album can be something of a one week wonder these days, if it relies more so on pure sales.)

Tbh, if D10 go on to have a bunch of charting singles & a high-charting album, and that’s combined with a continued strong social media presence, then this could absolutely see their next tour being in bigger venues. Which I’d say is the ultimate goal.

They’ll be an interesting group to follow and whether in the long term they shift the perception of what success looks like for a western pop group these days. I hope the boys aren’t at all despondent about how the single has done (if higher expectations were put upon them).
