54. M-Beat featuring General Levy - Incredible (remix) 83pts

Writer - General Levy

Top points - Brer 23, AH Gold 19, DaTilt 17

We are in the same year for the first jungle track to reach the top 10. The original release stalled at number 39 but a remix helped it to number 8. M-Beat is London musician Marlon Hart who managed two more top 20 hits.

Thank the lord Sweet Caroline is out, I hate it with all my soul. Already bracing myself for blocking out those heinous 'BA BA BA' shouts this summer x

  • 'The Windmills of Your Mind' is the first of my votes to drop out! Wonderful psychedelic imagery, piano and strings. The vocal performance is charming too.

Another good dance hit from 1994 although perhaps a bit minimalist for my tastes, shout out to Brer though for giving it maximum points in the first round!

53. Belinda Carlisle - Always Breaking My Heart 84pts

Writer - Per Gessle

Top points - Mango 25, GreyAsh 20, AH Gold 16

From two years later, this was Belinda Carlisle's seventh and final top 10 single. It was written by Per Gessle who was one half of Roxette. Already, three of the four wild cards have fallen.

'Incredible' doesn't quite live up to its name but it is a great example of early drum and bass and still sounds good now. In fact I played it just a few days ago!

My poor brave Belinda. At least she didn't finish bottom I guess happy

52. Taylor Dayne - Prove Your Love 100pts

Writers - Seth Swirsky, Arnie Roman

Top points - GreyAsh 25, TheSnake 23, Liamski689 12

In 1988, Taylor Dayne reached number 3 with 'Tell It To My Heart'. This was the follow-up and was her final top 10 hit. Her real name is Leslie Wunderman.

What a bop this is. I like 80s freestyle music, also I prefer this song to 'Tell It To My Heart'.

Top points - Jason 23, CowTzy 19, detonate 16

This is the most recent single to feature today, being released in 2019, an American/Australian collaboration. Troye Sivan is currently taking part in the Pop Factor. Will this song be used in a later round?

loving I'm so tired back then. Such a blast in the SE Asia x

Already 3 of my votes gone - and 2 of my big ones.

A massive fan of both Belinda Carlisle and Roxette - so I loved ‘Always Breaking My Heart’ - but it was never viewed as a classic. As it was a wildcard it’s no surprise that it didn’t make it through.

However ‘Prove Your Love’ is one of my favourite songs from the 80s. Like @TheSnake , I loved ‘Tell It To My Heart’ - but loved this even more. Seriously underrated!

But glad that in this vote, it managed to get 100 points. I was surprised it had qualified on points alone - but sad that it still didn’t make the top 50.

At the time I think Taylor Dayne was one of my top 3 solo artists: Kylie, Sam Fox and Taylor (with Belinda probably taking 4th place).

Yeah sadly even Belinda herself doesn't care much for 'Always Breaking My Heart' (or that album in general). I've seen her live 3 times in the last 20 years and she's never once performed that track sad

I'd never heard 'Prove Your Love' before this rate, I'm not sure how it managed to pass me by, but it is a great song - if I was more familiar with it I would have definitely voted for it!

True. I’ve seen her probably 10 times in the past 30 years - I don’t recall her ever having played it. Most of her sets are drawn from ‘Heaven On Earth’ and ‘Runaway Horses’ (actually also from ‘Live Your Life Be Free’). Even ‘Belinda’ gets more attention than ‘Real’ and ‘A Woman And A Man’. But then again, that was at a time when she was only successful in the UK (and to a lesser extent Australia).

It’s such a shame. It was just as good as ‘Tell It To Your Heart’ - but I’ve never heard it played anywhere since. Certain songs from the 80s are viewed as classics - and played time and time again. But others are just forgotten.

Oh wow, we could even have been at the same gigs. But yeah it does kinda make sense that most of her sets are drawn from Heaven, Runaway Horses and Live Your Life, with them being her three most successful albums. Real is sublime though, its sound is almost ahead of its time, I would love to hear her do more songs from it as it's between that and Runaway Horses as my favourite album of hers.

I know what you mean. It just seems almost arbitrary which ones go on to become classics and which ones are forgotten, regardless of quality!

I agree - ‘Real’ was a great album - but it was so different to her previous albums that it just didn’t become an international success. ‘Runaway Horses’ is one of those albums where no song is a filler. It was also a grower.

49. Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline 140pts

Top points - DarrenJ77 23, Borza 17, Mack 13, detonate 13, CowTzy 13

Sweet Caroline was released in 1969 but wasn't a hit in the UK until 1971, a few months after 'Cracklin' Rosie' had reached number 3. It returned to the top 20 in 2021 after being sung by England supporters at the Euros and has since become omnipresent at any England match, it seems, whether it's the men or the women.

48. Electric Light Orchestra - Confusion / Last Train To London 141pts

Writer - Jeff Lynne

Top points - King Rollo 25, TheSnake 21, AH Gold 20

The highest placed wild card was the fourth top 10 single from ELO's 'Discovery' album and their thirteenth overall. My top score is based mainly on Confusion which I prefer out of the two songs. Last Train To London was sampled on Atomic Kitten's number 2 hit 'Be With You' which was also part of a double A side single.

47. Savage Garden -Affirmation 142pts

Writers - Daniel Jones, Darren Hayes

Top points - Cymro87 25, GreyAsh 22, Mango 21

From 2000, this was the fourth and final top 10 hit for the Australian duo. It's not the end of the road for Darren Hayes who still has a solo single in the second semi-final.
