First and foremost, not release 'Scared of the Dark' amongst the Ed Sheeran album bloodbath and it could've pushed for top 20.

Yes going up against Ed who at the time was at his peak was totally the wrong week for the single, it really did prevent Steps going Top 20.

For me:

• A physical release, especially with Scared.

• Neon as the second single and Story/No more tears as third.

• Some promo in Australia/Belgium.

A topic about the re-release will come seperated.

I would 100% agree with this and additionally physicals for all the singles.

I agree about the physicals, they certainly would've helped.

1st singles - Scared Of The Dark

2nd single - Neon Blue

3rd Single - Story Of A Heart/I Will Love Again

I think they got the single choices right but Neon Blue should have been the 2nd single, if they had released another single i would probably have went with No More Tears on the Dancefloor

I'm not so sure physicals would have helped a great deal for these singles, I don't think many sold in any notable numbers until fairly recently did they?

(Then again, maybe that would have prompted even more sales due to them being more of a novelty... Which then could have extended further into the future, due to fans wanting to keep up with the collection: who could have known What The Future Holds back then? 🙈)

Ultimately I think the singles were pretty much bang on... Starting with two that were updated versions of lanes that they were very much known for!

  • Best song/party banger statement track (Scared of the Dark)

  • Mid tempo cover ballad, and a fairly inspired one at that (Story of a Heart)

  • Fan favourite (Neon Blue)

A different release week allowing a higher placement for Scared of the Dark, definitely would have helped to drive further hype/sales for the comeback, but I don't think anyone anticipated an album dominating in quite that way at that point (hence OCC fairly promptly changing the rules!)

I wonder where it would’ve peaked if they released a week or two earlier?

20 Anne-Marie 26,180

37 Steps 17,110

So they needed 9.071 physicals for a top 20 placing that week.

A week later it could’ve missed the top 40 btw.

Isn't that the week Ed sheeran held nearly the whole top 15??

Yeah, indeed.

Though top 40 and silver is acceptable if you ask me 😊

It is and i remember how happy we all were that they did actually make the top 40.

Now we would celebarte just as big if they ever achieve another top 100 single.

  • 3 weeks later...
