  • 'Catch You' is great fun, the rather crazed lyrics give it an infectious, determined energy and I like the mix of pop-rock with electro sounds. I've just reminded myself of Cathy Dennis' writing credi

Breaking the Circle deserved better. The production is my favourite thing about it but it’s definitely among the best of her later singles

theaudience - I Got The Wherewithal (Official Music Video) - YouTube

45. I Got The Werewithal (theaudience) - 5.821

Highest Scores: 8: (Jade), Lowest Scores: 4: (Viper)

The first of 3 'theaudience' singles to drop here and at the bottom of the list is their debut 'I Got The Werewithal', released in October 1997 and peaked at a mere #170 on the UK singles chart. A cute little 90's Indie pop track with sharp witty lyrics and dramatic production that showcases the band's post britpop style effectively. Perhaps it doesn't quite stand out enough when compared to her solo stuff,, but an okay little starting point.

44. f*** With You (ft Bob Sinclair & Gilbere Forte) - 6.1

Highest Scores: 9: (Paddington James), Lowest Scores: 4/4.5: (Nina West, HarryGarfield, dandy, Jester)

At #44 is one of Sophie's non-album collaboration efforts. 'f*** With You' released in April 2012 as the 5th single from Bob Sinclair's sixth studio album 'Disco Crash' & made minor impact on the charts worldwide by peaking at #35 in Belgium (Flanders), #144 in France & #76 in Russia. This is a typical and formulaic dance pop disco affair and Sophie does bring her usual classy charm to an otherwise forgettable number.

43. I Know Enough (I Don't Get Enough) (theaudience) - 6.357

Highest Scores: 8/8.5: (Jade, AllStarBySmashMouth), Lowest Scores: 5: (Nina West, HarryGarfield, dandy, Jester)

At #43 is the fourth and final single from Sophie's britpop band 'theaudience' with 'I Know Enough (I Don't Get Enough)', released in July 1998 and featured on their self-titled and only debut album and peaked at #25 on the UK singles chart, making this their highest charting single. High energy and quite catchy little indie rock number and one of their better releases.

42. The Deer & The Wolf - 6.406

Highest Scores: 8.5: (Scene), Lowest Scores: 4.5: (Jester)

At #42 is 'The Deer & The Wolf' released in August 2014 as the fourth and final single from Sophie's 5th studio album 'Wanderlust'. It was co-written by Ed Harcourt and Sophie herself with production handled by the former. The song was remixed under the name of 'The Deer & The Wolf (Role Reversal)' for the 'Wandermix' edition of the album. This is a solid little bop from Sophie's 5th album that saw her return to her indie pop roots with its quirky and twinkly pop rock sound and upbeat energy.

41. If You Can't Do It When You're Young (theaudience) - 6.428

Highest Scores: 8/8.5: (gooddelta, Scene, Jade, AllStarBySmashMouth, Jester), Lowest Scores: 4: (Josh!, HarryGarfield)

Rounding off this bunch of results at #41 is 'theaudience's' second single 'If You Can't Do It When You're Young; When Can You Do It'. Released in February 1998 and reached #48 on the UK singles chart, becoming their first single to crack the UK top 100 charts. Another polished Indie pop sounding track from the band with strong vocals and a solid hook. Not much else to say about this really other than its fine, but not entirely all that memorable, I guess this type of sound just isn't for me.

Old embedding codes don’t work for this new site. You can just post the URL directly into the post. 😁

TheAudience really took a battering here! At least their best single is still in.

The Bob Sinclar one is a bit cringe admittedly, but a fun novelty to hear her drop the F-bomb in a song.

Me outed as a bit of a theaudience stan! Justice for all three of those 🥺

Hopefully Inbetweeners anthem 'A Pessimist Is Never Disappointed' survives the next cull.

There'll be centuries for other lovers, but not for us

#40. Circles (Just My Good Time) (ft Busface) - 6.466

Highest Scores: 8: (gooddelta, Viper, AllStarBySmashMouth), Lowest Scores: 5/5.5: (Nina West, Scene, JosephStyles, Jade, HarryGarfield, dandy)

Kicking off the top 40 is a collaboration effort between Sophie Ellis Bextor & Australian production duo Busface. Released in March 2005 and underperformed on the major charts by peaking at #96 on the UK singles chart and at #63 on the Australian chart. Sophie is credited here as Mademoiselle E.B. on all releases of the single. This is a breezy little dance pop number with Sophie lending her vocals to yet another dance track, but the results here are less than memorable than some of her other collaborations.

#39. Death of Love - 6.6

Highest Scores: 7/7.5: (gooddelta, Josh!, Jessie Where, Viper, ....readyforit, AllStarBySmashMouth, Liam.k, dandy), Lowest Scores: 5/5.5: (HarryGarfield, Jester)

At #39 is 'Death of Love', released in April 2017 as the 4th and final single from her 6th studio album 'Familia'. The accompanying video was shot in San Sebastián del Oeste, Mexico, and released earlier the same month. A sophisticated synth laden ballad with a strong beat and Sophie's elegant vocals really adds to the atmosphere of the track. A stunning little number, but perhaps not quite as memorable as the album's previous singles, but still good though.

#38. Love Is You - 6.625

Highest Scores: 8/8.5: (gooddelta, Mango, Jessie Where, dandy), Lowest Scores: 4: (Scene)

At #38 is a full circle moment for Sophie Ellis Bextor with her cover of the 1977 Carol Williams disco song 'Love Is You' which was also used as a sample on her collaboration with Spiller back in the year 2000 which was her debut hit. This version was released in August 2018 as the lead single from her first compilation album 'The Song Diaries'. This is a cute little number that serves as a nod to her breakout hit 'Grovvejet (If This Ain't Love') and Sophie does it justice and keeps the disco flavour while updating and refining it for the modern era.

#37. Taste - 6.687

Highest Scores: 8: (Josh), Lowest Scores: 5: (Nina West, Jessie Where, dandy, Jester)

Rounding off this bunch is 'Taste', released in May 2025 as the 4th single from her 8th studio album 'Perimenpop' and was written by MNEK, Jon Shave and Sophie herself. This is an okay song but not as strong as some of the other singles from the album, due to its undercooked chorus, despite the confident lyrics, it doesn't quite pop in the way that it should.

Edited by Nina West

No real losses for me so far. I know I gave F*** With You a 9, but in hindsight that was generous. Though I'm happy it didn't finish last.

'Death of Love' is very nice, and I adore her version of 'Love is You'! It's so cute, has a real warmth to it.

'Taste' is slightly annoying, although I can appreciate it a bit more when I play the album through.

#36. Love Is A Camera - 6.718

Highest Scores: 10: (Paddington James), Lowest Scores: 4: (Jester)

At #36 is 'Love Is A Camera', released in June 2014 as the 3rd single from her 5th Studio album 'Wanderlust'. The song was serviced to hot adult contemporary radio stations and Sophie co-wrote it with Ed Harcourt who also produced the track. Its lyrics recount the story of a woman who takes photos of her victims and keeps their souls in the pictures. This is an elegant little number that combines elements of tango and waltz music with beautifully descriptive lyrics that captures a clear and vivid tone of the song. However, the song lacks energy and variety, but its well produced though.

#35. Immortal (with Lufthaus) - 6.766

Highest Scores: 10: (Liam.k), Lowest Scores: 4: (Jester)

At #35 is a 2024 collaboration effort between Sophie & Robbie Williams as apart of the Electronic trio Lufthaus consisting of Robbie himself alongside Australian producers Tim Metcalfe and Flynn Francis. The song featured on their debut album together 'Visions, Vol.1'. A moody trance leaning track that merges deep electronica. An interesting addition to Sophie's discography but not entirely an essential one.

#34. Everything Is Sweet - 6.781

Highest Scores: 9.5: (Josh), Lowest Scores: 4: (Jessie Where, Jade)

At #34 is 'Everything Is Sweet', released in March 2023 as the 2nd single from her 7th studio album 'Hana'. A nice little synthpop track that blends disco soul with a fantasy utopia theme and a passionate chorus that captures that feeling of escapism and romance.

#33. Lost In The Sunshine - 7.0

Highest Scores: 9.5: (Josh), Lowest Scores: 5/5.5: (Jade, dandy, Jester)

Another 'Hana' track drops with 'Lost In The Sunshine' which was released as the album's 3rd and final single. An uplifting and breezy little track that was inspired by a trip to Japan. A gorgeous little track with clean production and solid vocals that captures the dreamlike vibe of the track perfectly.
