Think this needs a thread as it's one of the most talked about films at the moment - Backrooms is the feature length adaptation of the director's 2022 web series (which is available to watch on YouTube) which was based initially on a viral 4chan post about a mysterious liminal space.

At just 20 (!) years old, Kane Parsons (Kane Pixels on YouTube) is the youngest A24 director to date and it's already broken the record for A24 opening weekends at 38 million and is looking to debut higher than the recent Star Wars movie did!

I'm not sure how YouTubers are producing some of the best recent horror movies but here's another one!

I won't say too much as I think it's best to go into this as blind as possible (I did watch the series to sort of gain an idea and it did provide some context, but it's a completely original story and you don't need to watch them to know what's going on), but it's really impressive stylistically and expands on the lore to a place that feels appropriate for a feature film adaptation yet never gets rid of the inherent fear of someone lost and alone in a never-ending maze.

With how well this is done, I'd expect we are going to be hearing quite a bit more from these going forward!

Couldn’t go to the first screening last Saturday but booked it for 17th June now. Germany is always a bit late to the party with the movie releases :’)

Went to see this (on my own xo) on Monday June 1st. In the beginning I wasn't super sold on it and I thought I'd be giving it maybe 3 and a half stars on Letterboxd, but by the end it had really won me over and I gave it 4 stars (which is my most common rating - it's quite difficult to get a 5 out of me). It's very intriguing and atmospheric and I think it has a lot of psychological layers (about the subconscious, for example) that I'm unfortunately not movie-articulate enough to explain lol but that's just kinda what I got from it.

Loved all the yellow xo

I... wasn't a fan unfortunately. :(

I'm really gutted that I didn't like it. I just felt that the idea is much stronger than the execution of it. I don't think the characters were fleshed out all that well either unfortunately.

Happy to see it do so well ofc. But it wasn't for me </3

Throughout the movie I kept thinking I recognise Renate Reinsve (who plays Mary) but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Turns out she's the Norwegian actress who played lead roles in two movies I've loved recently - 'The Worst Person in the World' (2021) and 'Sentimental Value' (2025). I had a feeling it might be her but I think what maybe threw me off is that in 'Backrooms' she speaks English and in those other two movies she spoke Norwegian.

I'll be going to see it for a second time already with @Sabrewulf on the 16th as we'll be in town that day anyway and I'm curious what he'd think of it. So far the movies we've watched together that were chosen by me have been quite hit-or-miss, especially for him kink
