Brenda's actually been stabilising into the chasing pack these last few years after overtaking Mariah a few times - I'd honestly say Jingle Bell Rock would be a better comparison for Brenda than Mariah would be this year given both will probably end up scrapping for positions between #2 and #4

People just like streaming old songs

Basically this, but also death of the monoculture - many people are still interested in new music, but this splinters in so many directions that very little of it reaches the critical mass to appear in these charts. Whereas there are many older songs which are more likely to be of common interest.

Then again, 'Babydoll' did 635k yesterday, so maybe the monoculture is out in force after all...
