We are now halfway through this year and have yet to have a chain of at least 2 'one week' No.1s (i.e: 2 or more songs only topping the charts for one week, after each other) the last time this had occured at this time of year was way back in 1993! bit random, but a true fact! ;)

It makes reaching Number One more meaningful when we don't get a new chart-topper every week. We look set for a return to the days of around 16 Number Ones each year rather than 30+.

It does, but sadly as long as the is McFly <_< , there will always be one week no.1s! haha

Of course the counter argument for this is that you can now get to No.1 with 25k sales when in 2000, every single one of the 42 different No.1's of that year sold far more than the average figure now, with many of them topping 100k in their first week...

I dont think theres many number ones that sell 25k! Its very rarely less than 30, if you worked it out its probably about 35 on average I'd guess?

In fact the #1s this year have been alternating between one-weekers and multi-weekers:

Mika (5 wks)

Kaiser Chiefs (1 wk)

Take That (2 wks)

Sugababes & Girls Aloud (1 wk)

Proclaimers (3 wks)

Timbaland (1 wk)

Beyonce & Shakira (3 wks)

McFly (1 wk)

Rihanna (3+ wks)

I think it's pathetic the #1 has only managed to clear 50k on 6 occasions. :manson:

The chart works so diffrently now though, compared to 2000, then the was way more promo for singles, just before release, and singles were only availible to buy the week of release (hence the high sales for no.1) , unlike today, with itunes and songs being relesed weeks in advance.

I keep a little graph with the average sales for #1 songs. Interesting that so far this year we're above the total for last year. I guess the chart changes re downloads have had some impact, albeit small?

Makes you wonder what happened 2003 that it suddenly nose dived.

It was heading towards a decline in 2002 due to a shift towards digital buying, but was falsely inflated that year by the Pop Idol singles. Therefore, without any huge releases, a jaded public and downloads on the increase, 2003 showed a slump.

Not many new singles are charting inside the top 40 as last year, we used to have 10-16 new entries every week, those days are gone, we only seem to be getting 4-10 new entries every week now and that's including downloads only, it feels the chart has fallen in a time warp back to the 80s.
The charts are completely dull now. Seeing the top 10 half of it was in the top 10 5 0r 6 weeks ago. They couldn't be more boring!

I agree it's all moving so slowly. Hopefully something will change it again. These things go in cycles.
