Liberal Democrat leader 'to quit'

Source: bbc.co.uk

Sir Menzies Campbell is to resign as leader of the Liberal Democrats, the BBC understands.

Senior Lib Dems Vincent Cable and Simon Hughes are due to make the announcement officially at 1830 BST, the BBC's political editor Nick Robinson said.

Earlier Mr Cable conceded the party's leadership was "under discussion" - there had been much speculation since the party's conference.

It follows the PM's decision not to call a general election this year.

Not surprised by this, he was too old and too poor performer in speeches, Lib Dems are 11% in the polls which is pathetically low for them

They should never have forced out Charles Kennedy, so what if he was a pisshead so was Winston Churchill, Kennedy was a good leader for them

I haven't even paid any attention to the Lib Dems since they backstabbed Kennedy just to put Campbell in charge.

They should see sense and BEG Kennedy back, otherwise I will more than likely remain in the floating voter category.

This sums up my view entirely.

Besides anybody who can go on Radio 4's Desert Island Discs and selects Amy Winehouse - Rehab has a great sense of humour!

Doesn't matter who is their leader. They're a political irrelevance and will always be the third party.

not so

they might be instrumental in deciding the countrys future if theres a hung parliament, and could topple the government if they vote with the opposition, hardly 'a political irrelevance'.

Agreed... Frankly, I think the general attitude towards the Lib Dems is pretty bad, I'm sick of the Labour/Tory middle-of-the-road consensus politics we have in this country where you cant even tell who's nicking who's policies these days, the Lib Dems actually provide a proper alternative to the two-party monopolising... No, I didn't particularly like the way Charles Kennedy was stabbed in the back after he got the Lib Dems their best election results in decades (just cos the guy had a drinking problem???? FFS, so did sodding CHURCHILL.... -_- ), but if you want some real backstabbing just look to the Tories... Just HOW MANY leaders is it they've had now in the past decade...???
