Rivals unlikely to see off Lewis' Spirit

By Paul Williams

Leona Lewis is poised to dominate the UK singles and albums charts for another week, with early retail reports indicating Bleeding Love and its parent album Spirit are certain to extend their runs at the top.

After opening with the highest first-week sales in history last week for a debut title, the Syco/Sony BMG-issued Spirit is presently outselling its four closest challengers combined, while Bleeding Love has already sold double the units of its nearest rival to set up a fifth successive week at number one on the singles chart.

Polydor act Take That’s Rule The World is again Bleeding Love’s main competition for top spot, but it faces a battle with All Around The World’s single Heartbroken by T2 featuring Jodie Aysha for runners-up position.

The T2 single is on course to move from its debut position of 14 last Sunday into the top five after being physically released.

However, the physical release last Sunday of the Spice Girls’ comeback single Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) is only having a marginal positive effect on the track’s chart fortunes. The Virgin single will reverse its chart decline, having dropped from 20-23 last Sunday, but may have to settle for a position towards the bottom end of the Top 10 this coming Sunday. If it does not peak higher than seven, it will be the lowest-charting BBC Children In Need single to date.

While Leona Lewis is likely to remain at number one, Syco/Sony BMG should expect to place a second single in the Top 10 with a new entry courtesy of Shayne Ward’s Breathless.

After six new entries in the top eight last week, the artist albums chart is slightly calmer this week, although three albums are realistically vying to debut in the Top 10. They are led by Fascination-signed Girls Aloud with Tangled Up, while other high new entries are on the way from UCJ’s Katherine Jenkins (Rejoice) and the RCA Label Group’s Alicia Keys with As I Am.

Universal’s Fascination label will also make a Top 20 dent, in conjunction with the Really Useful Group, with the self-titled debut album from BBC TV’s Any Dream Will Do winner Lee Mead, as will UCJ with the Fron Male Voice Choir’s Voices Of the Valley – Encore.

The RCA Label Group’s Duran Duran have their work cut out securing a Top 20 debut for new studio album Red Carpet Massacre, which is presently three places off the chart threshold, while Atlantic’s Led Zeppelin look like doubling their titles in the Top 50 with the return of 1976’s The Song Remains The Same following the chart arrival last week of the retrospective Mothership.

Can Leona and TT stay at number 1 and 2 for the fifth week running?

I hope TT can stay at #2 for an other week

And I hope Kylie won't drop too much :(

Oh, and I so damn hope GA will be top10 with their album! Pleeease!

I think GA will deffo be top ten - Such a good album. Leona #1 in the singles and Spicies #2
Leona for the double again :cheer: .

She's ahead in the midweeks?, great stuff!

She will be but I'm sure that's just Mikey's prediction.

ah thanks, I wasnt sure :)

No midweeks at the mo...

But somewhat I wish she's still #1, at least it won't be the SG :P

Much as I hate Leona Lewis' tawdry pop, I'd be very happy to keep the f***ing Spice Girls off number one.

That was my prediction, info is released after 11am sometime.

I'm such a tease

Y do u ppl hate the Spice Girls so much, what have they done to you lot?

All they did was bring fantastic pop music and open doors for girls groups and female stars such as Destiny's child, Girls Aloud, Britney spears etc.

I hope Spice Girls climb to number one, they deserve it just for being legends.

Leona had her time, she spent 4 weeks at number one u greedy pple, let someone else have it. Plus Leona has a whole lifetime to get number ones, SG dn't as this is just for the fans as a thank U.

Even if they don't climb at the top, Girls Aloud can NEVER match their record breaking 9 number ones (wriiten by themselves).

Lol, I got all excited for a moment :)

I'll guess at 18000 for Leona today.

Y do u ppl hate the Spice Girls so much, what have they done to you lot?

Because they don't deserve to be #1 with a rubbish track which was awaited for about 5 years.

Even if they don't climb at the top, Girls Aloud can NEVER match their record breaking 9 number ones (wriiten by themselves).

Why do you feel the need to hit GA though?

And anyway, the Guiness Book brands GA as the most successful Girl Band in UK Chart History due to their longevity and their 16 top10 hits, it's fact, and that's something the SG were not able to do because they were even not able to stay as the band and they f***ed it all by going on solo careers.

Really hope the spice girls get to number 1! or at least number 2!
It'll be an interesting battle this week as Leona is selling far more than the Spice Girls digitally (Bleeding Love is #1 and #11 on iTunes compared to #28 and #100 for Headlines) but SG's have the physical format in every store prominently displayed in large charity-fed numbers with even a TV advertising campaign to sell it.
