Posted December 31, 200717 yr is anyone else missing bonus chart weeks when for example a number 13 record would end up getting 9 wks on chart and not the usual 4 wks??? and you'd be thinking 'come on, come on you might get another wks on chart as there is nothing much around at this time of year..." the chart now has become very boring, its no wonder they couldnt have totp on ever week as it would just be a rpt for 10 wks in a row
December 31, 200717 yr It has become very stagnant nowadays with songs selling high amounts but over a long period of time...I don't remember the last time we had four songs in the top 10 with ten or more weeks inside it :o
December 31, 200717 yr Author It has become very stagnant nowadays with songs selling high amounts but over a long period of time...I don't remember the last time we had four songs in the top 10 with ten or more weeks inside it :o i liked it when things zoomed in and zoomed in with great burst of excitment, and the bonus weeks were cool. for example: M People - Itchycoo park #11 8wks fantasy island #33 9 wks i know its m-people so dont go nobody wants them to have extra weeks  but you get the idea i guess in a normal feb - oct period theu would be like this M People - Itchycoo park #11 4wks fantasy island #33 2 wks
December 31, 200717 yr It's helping to increase sales though so I don't really mind. Yes its a tad boring to follow and I would probably rather have the quick-paced action of the late 90s or early 00s given the choice but I think the chart means something more now. It's also harder to get a hit single unlike before where you had loads of fluke big hits because of heavy fanbases and all that shizz.
December 31, 200717 yr Very true...fanbase hits are never fun are they...they just drop out instantly so there was no point in their success in the first place I remember when being astonished when Lonestar's Amazed had that ridiculous chart run in 2000...if something had the same chart run now I don't think anyone would bat an eyelid as we are used to such longevity now

It's also harder to get a hit single unlike before where you had loads of fluke big hits because of heavy fanbases and all that shizz. but youre getting loads of one hit wonders hanging arounf like PWT's and Hellogoodbye, it was more intersting with these heavy fanbased indie acts in the charts rather than having whatever radio liked playing (and its obv daytime mainstream contemporary hit and rhythmic radio formats dont like changing thei playlists if they can help it/it is working for them) Very true...fanbase hits are never fun are they...they just drop out instantly so there was no point in their success in the first place but it opens you up to a greater amount of music, which you can think wow what was that, note down and purchase

Your Love Alone...was a great song and rewarded them with a big selling No.2. A much more worthy No.2 hit than the low selling Empty Souls or Love of Richard Nixon
December 31, 200717 yr Author But looking back, before downloads Bon Jovi, Iron Maiden, Marillion and tons of others could just get hits with weak songs... but those bands are only really interesting to their fanbase but it would be less intersting if the iron maiden hitography went: 1982 * Run to the hills .................#7 42 wks on chart 1988 * can i play with madness........ #3 62 weeks on chart 1988* the evil that men do ........... #5 3 wks on chart 1988 the clairvoyent................ #63 1 wk 1990 holy smoke................# 23 1 wk 1991 ! bring your daughter to the slaughter..................1 5 wks 2003 * wildest dreams..............45 1 wk on chart and marillion's went 1990 Easter ...............34 2wks on chart 1991 Easter ...............23 6 wks 1992 Easter ...............41 1 wk 1993 * Easter ...............6 23 wks 1994 Easter ...............7 24 wks 1996 Easter ...............23 9 wks 1998 Easter ...............31 7 wks 1999 Easter ...............43 5 wks 2001 Easter ...............65 9 wks 2004 Easter ...............45 19 wks 2004 * you're gone ...........#7 3wks 2006 Easter ...............23 17 wks 2007 Easter ...............32 14 wks now they will need a song with mass appeal to have another hit...just look at the Manics. Your Love Alone...was a great song and rewarded them with a big selling No.2. A much more worthy No.2 hit than the low selling Empty Souls or Love of Richard Nixon but with the Manics, they followed it up with a #10 2wks on the chart and then a 1wk on the chart - as the radio programmers were not that interested - only intersted in the first single these days that they want to play to death for a year.
December 31, 200717 yr 1982 * Run to the hills .................#7 42 wks on chart 1988 * can i play with madness........ #3 62 weeks on chart 1988* the evil that men do ........... #5 3 wks on chart 1988 the clairvoyent................ #63 1 wk 1990 holy smoke................# 23 1 wk 1991 ! bring your daughter to the slaughter..................1 5 wks 2003 * wildest dreams..............45 1 wk on chart . Recently i remember Different world only stayed in for 3 weeks and peaked at #3, which actually is worse than Mcfly who got to #3 with their latest single but stayed for 5 weeks. Not that im saying Mc Fly is better than Iron Maiden, thats criminal  Edited December 31, 200717 yr by Harve

I've never met anyone who would say that Autumnsong and Indian Summer were better than Your Love Alone Is Not Enough...those 2 singles deserved lower chart positions I agree that radio do seem most interested only in the first single nowadays but if you have good enough songs then you can buck the trend (Fergie, Mark Ronson, Mika, Timbaland etc...)
January 1, 200817 yr I know what you mean, Al. Back in the late 90s-early 00s it was common for mid table hits to suddenly shoot up or linger for a while - it was called the post Christmas slow down (although we still get that now, sales wise). An example or two: The Verve - Lucky Man (1997) {7}-21-29-27-24-32-32-39-48-59-70-65-73->13 (From week 3 was new year 98) Steps - 5678 (1997) 18-22-23-17-20-20-20-{14}-16-15-17-17-22-30-42-61-66->17 (From the peak it was post xmas) And some songs that shot up after xmas: All Saints - Never Ever (1997) 3-5-6-5-4-4-4-2-{1}-2-2-4-5-3-7-11-19-25-30-37-42-50-52-70->24 (climbed to the top after xmas in early 98) Steps - Heartbeat/Tragedy (1998) 2-5-5-8-8-6-4-{1}-2-3-3-3-6-10-10-15-16-20-23-24-30-30-32-42-41-48-57-59-65-69->30 (the peak was in Jan 99) Toploader - Dancing In The Moonlight (2000) 11-16-21-26-22-20-23-21-21-21-17-13-8-{7}-12-14-21-22-28-42-48-54-58-70-71->25 (levelled off and started to climb in early 2001) Outkast - Hey Ya! (2003) 6-8-10-13-22-16-13-14-9-9-4-4-{3}-6-6-6-9-19-32-45-65->21 (started to climb in early 2004) Alot of the above can be attributed to word of mouth combined with the post xmas slowdown. Thanks to polyhex.com for the chart runs.
January 1, 200817 yr I think Nickelback's Rockstar will be added to this list of post-xmas oddities I think it will reach a new peak next week once again
January 1, 200817 yr Wow Outkast- Hey Ya had an extraordinary chart run. Yes i think that Nickelback will repeak. I only noticed it 3 weeks after it was released and only heard it a few weeks after and is a slow burner
January 1, 200817 yr I know Nickelback are essentially a rock act but Rockstar is more of a country song than a rock song... perhaps they are paving the way for a country comeback... it was quite big in 1998 in the UK with Shania Twain, LeAnn Rimes, Faith Hill and The Mavericks
January 1, 200817 yr Author I've never met anyone who would say that Autumnsong and Indian Summer were better than Your Love Alone Is Not Enough...those 2 singles deserved lower chart positions i'm not saying anything about the quality of those two releases as i dont find MSP that particular intersting (well the 3piece dadrock version anyway - they might have been better when they were punks) and actually i've never heard Indian Summer, because obv it wasnt played on the tv for every hour. But looking back, before downloads Bon Jovi, Iron Maiden, Marillion and tons of others could just get hits with weak songs...now they will need a song with mass appeal to have another hit...just look at the Manics. Your Love Alone...was a great song and rewarded them with a big selling No.2. A much more worthy No.2 hit than the low selling Empty Souls or Love of Richard Nixon I think Nickelback's Rockstar will be added to this list of post-xmas oddities I know Nickelback are essentially a rock act but Rockstar is more of a country song than a rock song... well i guess except if you believe country should be slices of bohemian Americana is a kinda roots/american folk music thing to rate with black american forms like jazz and the blues - then i guess they would say Nickelback is just more of the same watered down grunge/ultra commercial radio wankrock and in regards to the weak songs by Bon Jovi, Iron Maiden and Marillion* which had 3 wks on chart each what the f*** is this weak nickelback record doing on chart, and why will it end up with about 25 wks on chart in total???? (think their total could be shared between the 4 of them with a few left over for random roni size records ) oh yes its getting a lot of airplay, well theres playboy bunnies in the video and so this v poor record and $h!t video gets the airplay as sex sells, and the boobies in there video get people tuned in (and so must be working along the same lines as most of the MoS dance record videos from ther past few years). *btw didnt the last Marillion records get in the chart anyway with the new rules (according to some reviewers they are supposed not to be v prog like muse or genesis now more like radiohead and coldplay)
