Thank you for that summary, Mr.X! Always appreciated!

Some interesting insights there. It seems there's a lot of aspects to her solo career that aggravate her, particularly commercially speaking. I think it might serve her well to try and stop dwelling on the past (as much as it's interesting for fans) because obviously what has happened can't be changed. I know that's easier said than done though, and I'm incredibly guilty of it myself (as the rest of this post will prove, lmao).

I don't really appreciate her attitude towards unreleased Spice Girls songs. :( I wish she would embrace them as a piece of their history, a moment in time when at one point they clearly thought WOMAN was good enough to perform in front of tens of thousands of people. An interesting thing I read re: WOMAN the other day, is that Emma mentioned the track in an interview in July 2000:

^ That entire page is really interesting by the way. Some of it is false rumours, but there's some interesting quotes and information to be found!

July 2000 is the month they really began to put their energies into Forever - they filmed the two music videos and did the album photoshoot (if I'm not mistaken). If WOMAN was still on Emma's mind then, to the extent that she talked positively about it in an interview, it seems like they might have still been considering using it? I truly wish they had just thrown it on Holler as a B Side, then we could have avoided over 20 years of wondering about it.

Do I even like WOMAN (live version)? Admittedly I'm not wild about it, I've probably heard it less than 10 times in my life  Nevertheless it would be interesting to hear it, even as a demo. I wish Melanie C was more able to put herself into the shoes of fans.

Melanie C has displayed some really questionable taste in music over the years tbh. Cosmic Shower is probably one of the worst recorded songs in music history?! That'll forever be a part of her discography. Yet she dismisses some unreleased Spice Girls songs... hmm. x

Oh, and this was mentioned on Popjustice: "Melanie C was just asked about vinyls... She said having Northern Star on vinyl would be a 'fun' thing to do... but she didn't seemed excited about it." It's a shame she isn't more excited about the possibility of issuing her back catalogue on vinyl. If there's ever a time to do it, it would have been within the past 3 years or so. The 20th anniversary was the perfect opportunity for a Northern Star vinyl, but of course we didn't get one.

Tbh they're all a bit frustrating in regards to releases, I won't centre the blame purely at Melanie C. WOMAN obviously doesn't involve Geri, but she's a bit strange about her own back catalogue too, i.e. blocking a reissue of Schizophonic (not to mention spending a lot of the 2010s recording music that she ultimately never released, lol). Clearly Victoria couldn't care less either, if she did then she would at least have This Groove and Let Your Head Go commercially available (she has the rights to these songs, apparently).

In the 90s, it was great that the Spice Girls had so much control and say in their own music, their business endeavours etc. Clearly it's a double-edged sword situation though, because it's lead to them blocking the sort of releases that are commonplace with pretty much every other major group in music history. ABBA fans are certainly treated to a non-stop deluge of reissues and special releases.

AGREE on Mel C's attitude. It is soo annoying. Like, get over it hun, one of your songs has 'g-string on it'. You released Viva Life ffs

To be honest, she did seem excited about a vinyl. It's not the first time she mentions it and I think it might be on the cards judgng from my reading of her response.

Producing a vinyl is an expense though, I'm sure for a label they have deals with vinyl plants.

It would definitely be something where Mel C would have to speculate to accumulate. Producing 2k NS vinyls might cost her £10k but if she can flog the 2k for £25 each there is money to be made. It is just if she doesnt sell them and they sit on her webstore for years.

She would easily sell 2k vinyls of Northern Star most of the Spice fandom would snap it up. What she should do it put it up as a pre-order and then make enough depending on the amount of orders she gets with some extras for those who will order on the week or after. For example if she gets 1k preorders then she knows to make about 1.5-2k. She should do it with all her albums I'd buy every one of them and she can make an amount gauging the interest each time. Not only is it money but it also boosts her sales I mean say every album sells 2k of vinyls then that is 14k sales to add to her totals. It's a no brainer to me, make some cassettes too really milk that cow.

That Spice News page was a nice walk down memory lane. I remember checking that page pretty much every day for something new. It's actually quite interesting how often Mel C talked about touring Forever. Videos from behind-the-scenes of Holler and Let Love Lead the Way show she was already very over being there by that point. Yet...she continued talking about her hopes for a group tour through September?

On the WOMAN front, I think the pop tracks were still in the mix later than most think. My guess is they were dumped around the time they suddenly had to record Wasting My Time and re-record Right Back At Ya. What was that? July? August? I remember one of them (maybe Mel B?) saying something about how they suddenly realized the album wasn't finished really late in the game. I also remember reading from someone that the Darkchild team took a crack at WOMAN but they just couldn't bend it to their style. Can't remember where I heard that, though.

Anyway. I like the live recording of WOMAN just fine...but I think the song's more a symbol than anything. We got a third album that's not bad...but wasn't what the fanbase necessarily expected, and the group abandoned it immediately after years of anticipation. WOMAN is more than an unreleased track. It's the great "what could have been". That's how I perceive it, anyway. And I don't care what anyone says. I like the g-string line.

Vinyls generally take 10 weeks to produce though, so it would have to be on pre-order for let's say 14 weeks or more to gauge a month of pre-orders and then 10 weeks to have them ready for when it is released.

It could happen but it would take planning and I feel this is where her team are a bit lacking.

Northern Star would totally sell around 2.5k vinyls easily. Probably not in the same week but it would eventually. It's a well loved album within the wider Spice Girls fanbase and it would create some nostalgia sales to go alongside the fans from across the world. It makes total sense to release it, I never understood why they just ignored its anniversary last year.

Imagine a vinyl with a dark orange colour to reflect the vibe of the time

Go the extra mile and release also a limited edition for the album with a second CD with rareties :yahoo: it would sell out and everyone would be happy too but this is Mel C so it wont happen... :nocheer:

Her attitude seemed ok with me . She even made a joke by referencing WOMAN which means she has listened to it recently.

Ofcourse if the artwork has leaked may mean the person has the song ? Maybe it was stored with the artwork ? As an independent artist this must be a concern .

I thought she came across good.

She's a perfectionist. Perfectionism leads to anxiety and depression, she's all or nothing because if it's not perfect it's a failure. While perfectionism is good for working but it costs you deep pain and suffering due to fear of failure. As she said, being with the girls is much more pressure because she doesn't want to let them down. Spicemania, magnitue pressure and success in that particular short period of time, press and criticism affected these girls deeply, all of them have suffered insecurities, mentally damaged, losing self belief and confidence, etc. Those stuff take years to heal even if you're in great hands, some will stay there forever. They weren't all perfect themselves to begin with, imagine going through those experiences all of the sudden. When they do weird things and probably not right or good enough, I hope the fans are not too cruel to them.

Both Viva Life & Cosmic Shower were recorded for charity. They are not really an official part of Melanie's discography, as they were never available commercially.

To be honest with you, recording shit music 'in the name of charity' is even worse than putting tripe like Do I, Soul Boy, May Your Heart, the whole of Stages, Carolyna, I Want Candy, Hold On, and much more into your albums.

'For charity' isnt really a defence of how bad the song is. And releasing a shit song in the name of charity is just condescending (even if the intentions are right). And yes, it is still very much part of her discography because it was recorded and released somehow. Otherwise, you wouldnt count the UK version of Better Alone part of her discography either hey?

I think Melanie has to get over her high horse, personally. She is clearly more fond of her solo music and that is normal, as it is more 'her'. That doesnt mean she should be judgemental about the group's music, specially when she has released so much crap over the years lol

WHOA leave Carolyna alone you savage

May Your Heart & Carolyna are among my favorite songs. ^_^

That is not a valid comparison. Better Alone was released as part of an album and as a digital single, whereas Cosmic Shower & Viva Life were not.

She is also against her own unreleased music getting heard. It doesn't matter whether it's Spice Girls or Melanie C songs.

No! :P

I know it is a fan favourite, much like Think About It and most of The Sea, but I find it really uninspired and felt like it was quite dated by the time it was released. Thats just my opinion lol

I mean Melanie has released some right drivel Cosmic Shower and Cool as you are utter tripe... Carolyna and May your heart however are NOT!

Here is the DJ set Melanie did for the Scott Mills Show on Radio 1 the other day. :music:

May your heart is wonderful.

I think May Your Heart is terrible.

May Your Heart is lovely! I sense people give it a hard time specifically because of “catch big fishes” lyric, but I always found that to be cute.

I’d count Cosmic Shower as release, after all there were CDs made of it to purchase. I find it amusing that no one has bothered to upload the audio to YouTube after all these years... it’s a good thing that it’s not an easy song to come by lol.

The 'catch big fishes' is a cute line, at least there is a level of whimsical poetry to it. The song itself? not my cup of team at all
