I don't think the different labels thing is a big issue. Steps, Kylie, Cher, Sophie Bextor, etc. have released compilations with material from multiple labels. It just requires to negotiate a licensing deal.

Let's say we're living in a hypothetical world where everything can get worked out with record companies and Mel could just use whichever songs she wants from her back catalogue. I would definitely be on the side of putting out a Best Of collection over a Greatest Hits.

I realize that's leaving out a top ten with Here It Comes Again...but does anyone especially like that one? I'd just see a release like this as a chance to showcase her stronger material...ignoring the fact that her single choices were sometimes compromised over the years for this reason or that. Just a "here's what you've been missing" sort of release to accompany the handful of big hits on there. Plus, it's just a good showcase for how versatile she is as an artist.

Apparently Melanie has split up with her boyfriend of 7 years (who was [or still is?] her manager).

I think it is quite insulting and demeaning to refer to the career she puts a lot of hard work and passion into as “cute” and “meh.” She is a woman who is making her own strides in the industry no matter how small they might be and should be applauded for continuing to do so, when very few others would.

 

I get it is an opinion which is fine, but it’s one I totally disagree with. For me her last era has been pretty much perfection and she deserved a lot more success from it.

Listen, I take back the use of the words 'cute' and 'meh' as they read as condescending.

 

However, it is my opinion that she could do much better than what she has been serving for the past 20 years, even if her last album and era was a step up. If she is happy, great and good for her though, but it all just still feels that a lot of potential is wasted.
