Love songs all over the place, sure to plummet next week, with Valentine`s Day out of the way! MICHAEL JACKSON having the highest new entry, with the 25th Anniversary, of Thriller...the first number one single from that (originally) I believe was BILLIE JEAN. Let`s go back to 1980. What happened then? Well Sunday nights were awash, with Cenral Europe`s most listened too, chart show, on Radio one, with the Sensational Mr TONY BLACKBURN (who had swap places with SIMON BATES 6 months earlier). Tony also introduced JUNIOR CHOICE now that ED STEWART had moved to the ED STEWART REQUEST SHOW on Radio two`s weekday afternoon schedule. Here`s 1980`s albums... w/k ending 22nd Feb 1980 01 02 THE LAST DANCE - VARIOUS ARTISTS 02 01 THE PRETENDERS - THE PRETENDERS 03 03 ONE STEP BEYOND - MADNESS 04 04 SHORT STORIES - JON AND VANGELIS 05 06 THE SPECIALS - THE SPECIALS 06 05 REGATTA DE BLANC - POLICE 07 10 KENNY - KENNY ROGERS 08 09 I`M THE MAN - JOE JACKSON 09 13 MATAMATIC - JOHN FOXX 10 08 OFF THE WALL - MICHAEL JACKSON 11 30 GET HAPPY - ELVIS COSTELLO 12 07 PERMANENT WAVES - RUSH 13 NE NOLAN SISTERS - NOLANS 14 32 JUST FOR YOU - DES O, CONNER 15 14 ABBA`S GREATEST HITS VOL. 2 - ABBA Valentine`s Day reflected even in 1980, with the LAST DANCE topping the chart (featuring hits from DIANA ROSS, JIMMY RUFFIN etc. Most of the albums had singles taken from them, and JACKO`s latest pre-Thriller, "OFF THE WALL". The unstoppable DES O, CONNER with the biggest climber (again Valentine`s Day). Imagine going out today, and buying your loved one a DES O, CONNER album! You would be hit over the head with it! This particular Album featured songs such as JUST FOR YOU (the ALAN PRICE song), and Des having an attempt at CHANSON D` AMOUR (ART and DOTTY TODD 1958, MANHATTEN TRANSFER 1977). 1980`s Singles... 01 01 COWARD OF THE COUNTY - KENNY ROGERS 02 02 TOO MUCH TOO YOUNG - SPECIALS 03 10 AND THE BEAT GOES ON - WHISPERS 04 06 CAPTAIN BEAKY - KEITH MICHELL 05 04 SOMEONE`S LOOKING AT YOU - BOOMTOWN RATS 06 15 CARRIE - CLIFF RICHARD 07 NE ATOMIC - BLONDIE 08 03 I`M IN THE MOOD FOR DANCING - NOLANS 09 13 ROCK WITH YOU - MICHAEL JACKSON 10 20 I CAN`T STAND UP FOR FALLING DOWN - ELVIS COSTELLO 11 21 BABY I LOVE YOU - RAMONES 12 19 SO GOOD TO BE BACK HOME AGAIN - TOURISTS 13 08 I HEAR YOU NOW - JON AND VANGELIS 14 11 SAVE ME - QUEEN 15 14 7TEEN - REGENTS 16 05 ITS DIFFERENT FOR GIRLS - JOE JACKSON 17 22 RIDERS IN THE SKY - SHADOWS 18 07 BABE - STYX 19 16 THREE MINUTE HERO - SELECTOR 20 25 LIVING IN THE PLASTIC AGE - BUGGLES 21 NE TAKE THAT LOOK OFF YOUR FACE - MARTY WEBB 22 12 LIVING BY NUMBERS - NEW MUSIK 23 09 MY GIRL - MADNESS 24 27 TOO HOT - KOOL AND THE GANG 25 23 BUZZ BUZZ A DIDDLE IT - MATCHBOX 26 31 JANE - JEFFERSON STARSHIP 27 NE TOGETHER WE ARE BEAUTIFUL - FERN KINNEY 28 38 GAMES WITHOUT FRONTIERS - PETER GABRIEL 29 NE SO LONELY - POLICE 30 NE ON THE RADIO - DONNA SUMMER What can we say about 1980, well KENNY ROGERS had the surprise number 1. The SPECIALS hit was an EP actually called THE SPECIAL AKA LIVE EP...BLONDIE was about to score another charttopper...NOEL EDMONDS had been playing KEITH MICHELL on his Sunday show (KEITH had recorded the song in 1977), with NOEL spinning it constantly, it became a top 5 hit 3 years on! ELVIS COSTELLO, RAMONES, SHADOWS, MATCHBOX, FERN KINNEY all covered old songs (most noteably the RAMONES virtually, with PHIL SPECTOR totally copied the original of BABY I LOVE YOU from 1964 by the RONETTES, and FERN KINNEY covered a 1979 flop for RICHARD ALLEN all the way to the top, a few weeks later...JON AND VANGELIS (JON ANDERSON from YES), (VANGLELIS ex-APHRODITES CHILD) collaborated for the album SHORT STORIES, and achieved a few singles too....JEFFERSON STARSHIP were originally JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, later of course they became just STARSHIP....My fav of the day, was NEW MUSIK who could just not break the top 10, with any of their brilliant releases....on the bubble at 32 was JOHN FOXX and UNDERPASS (John, an original front man with ULTRAVOX)...ALSO on the bubble were SINGING THE BLUES (a re-make by MR RE-MAKE, DAVE EDMUNDS) and STIFF LITTLE FINGERS had a slow climb into the top 40, with the classic AT THE EDGE. Here is the top films, this week w/k ending 22/02/08 01 NATIONAL TREASURE-BOOK OF SECRETS (NEW) 02 JUNO 03 COLOURFIELD 04 SWEENEY TODD-DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET 05 THE WATER HOUSE (NEW) 06 DEFINATELY MAYBE (NEW) 07 OVER HER DEAD BODY 08 PENELOPE 09 NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN 10 ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS NATIONAL TREASURE having the edge on JUNO. Here we go...(up to 5pm, last night) w/k ending 22/02 45 51 ROCKFERRY - DUFFY * 44 28 WHO`S GOT A MATCH - BIFFY CLYRO 43 45 NEW SOUL - YAEL NAIM * 42 NE LOW - FLORIDA * 41 NE C0ME ON GIRL - TAIO CRUZ * 40 32 GIRL IS MINE - JACKSON/WILL I AM 39 39 HEARTBROKEN - T2 38 38 BLEEDING LOVE - LEONA LEWIS 37 27 WHAT HURTS THE MOST - CASCADA 36 13 THATS HOW PEOPLE GROW UP - MORRISEY 35 NE SOMETHING GOOD 08 - UTAH SAINTS * 34 33 SHE`S SO LOVELY - SCOUTING FOR GIRLS 33 31 MOVING TO NEW YORK - WOMBATS 32 30 RELAX - MIKA 31 29 CALL THE SHOTS - GIRLS ALOUD 30 26 RULE THE WORLD - TAKE THAT 29 23 HOMECOMING - KANYE WEST * 28 35 SCREAM - TIMBALAND/HILSON/SCHWERZINGER * 27 19 RIDE IT - JAY SEAN 26 NE WHEN I`M GONE - SIMPLE PLAN 25 25 VALERIE - RONSON/WINEHOUSE 24 24 NO ONE - ALICIA KEYS 23 17 JUST FINE - MARY J. If I am correct this is the first time, that a download only track, has made it to the top, with 2 weeks still left until the physical release? It`s probably a fact that the physicals of ROCKSTAR could not push it to stay at the top long enough, to withhold DUFFY who came from nowhere this week. Outside the top 45, are the CORAL the rest of the top 50, have been about for a while...with AMY MACDONALD slipping to 47 with them. The top 60, has entries from REM, CRAIG DAVID, has been taken over by GNARLS BARKLEY (climbed over that is)!!!! What`s going to happen next week? I think DUFFY will remain a-top until/including the physical release...some think H TWO 0, but I don`t think H TWO 0, will go any higher than number 2...where will KYLIE be physically added next week? I got an inkling, she might miss the top 5. Don`t forget we will get together for NEXT WEEK`S CHART on Monday from 4.30, and have a preview into the future! Edited February 24, 200817 yr by trevs

One of my favourite charts of 1980, Peter Gabirel and The Police were top 5 hits in later charts, Blondie went to #1 the week after, I remember her performing the single on TOTP she was drop dead gorgeous  I had a huge crush on her  so did many people at that time ;) Trevor Horn from the Buggles became a producer, that was his last hit with the Buggles. And whatever happened to Matchbox, they certainly did a lot of catchy infectious tracks in their time in the 80s.

Do you remember the follow up, and 3rd chart single by the BUGGLES though? It scraped the chart in the early Summer of 1980, called CLEAN CLEAN...remember it? The PLASTIC AGE always reminds me of an episode of the TOMORROW PEOPLE being shown at the time, entitled "The Living Skins", about a plastic clothing fabric, that took over ones will/mind! I must get on with the rest of the charts :yahoo:

February 16, 200817 yr Author Actually I got all 3 tracks somewhere I forgot about Clean Clean  Same as me! You miust remember the VAPORS follow up to the Feb 80 release of TURNING JAPANESE ? It was called NEWS AT TEN and in 1981, they had another small hit with JIMMIE JONES?
February 16, 200817 yr If I am correct is this the first time, that a download only track, has made it to the top, with 2 weeks still left until the physical release? Mika spent 2 weeks at number 1 on downloads-only ahead of its physical release
February 16, 200817 yr Author Mika spent 2 weeks at number 1 on downloads-only ahead of its physical release Thanks Manic, how could I forget Mika, and of course January 2007.
February 16, 200817 yr thanks trevs. Decent-ish chart from 1980 with a terrible number one which I bought back then for my mother as a Mother's Day present (she asked for the record - the sheer embarrassment I felt when buying it!). I had all 4 songs that New Musik charted with, three of them on one 10" limited edition single (This World Of Water had Living By Numbers and their first release Straight Lines on the B side). Looking at that 1980 chart I count that I owned 8 of them, which was quite low for that era when I sometimes had half the top 40 on vinyl. I have all 30 songs on tape still, all recorded from the Sunday top 40 countdowns!

I have all 30 songs on tape still, all recorded from the Sunday top 40 countdowns! I remember the deputy head at school, playing, "Coward of the County" in assembly one day. She told this most amazing story, about not having to fight your way through life! The following day, we were all surprised when it went to number one! At school we were all mystified. Was it all the deputy head`s doing?! New Musik certainly had lots of airplay. Quite amazing that even "This World of Water" couldn`t get into the top 30, at all. I always remember my sister copying the songs, from the top 40! I used to hate the fact she stopped the tape when Tony Blackburn/Simon Bate/Tom Browne started to talk. I would have preferred to listen to the whole shows, even years on, like I do with some I did myself! I don`t think we will ever re-capture the fun of such presenters (who would be very slick) even with the odd mistake thrown in. Making the programme, that more interesting, without the talentless presenters, who do such a ghastly job, today!
February 16, 200817 yr Mika spent 2 weeks at number 1 on downloads-only ahead of its physical release On downloads didn't he go 3-1-physical?
February 16, 200817 yr Author On downloads didn't he go 3-1-physical? That`s what I thought, but apparently wrong. From what Dave Taylor says, tomorrow will put H TWO O, in the top 7, and Britney and GOLDFRAPP could swap places. While, ONE REPUBLIC will swap places, with ONE NIGHT ONLY. KYLIE and SOULJA BOY could push ahead of PARAMORE, and TAIO CRUZ will knock MICHAEL JACKSON out! Funnily enough I wish someone would! Now I must correct, a little mistake. Edited February 16, 200817 yr by trevs
February 16, 200817 yr Mika did go 3-1-1 on downloads, then had a further 3 weeks at #1 with physicals. Rihanna - Umbrella also had 2 weeks at #1 just on downloads.
